For the benefit of those "browsing", just got my set of Pearl Marc Quinones Signature Timbales, and definitively, these are the best timbales out there...I do not think Modern Drummer's review of them did justice on how good these timbales are.
The sound of the "cascara" (when you hit the shell on the side) is loud and dry with less overtones that those timbales made of stainless steel made now by other companies. Don't be deceived, the lack of overtones or dryness of the sound does not substract on the volume of the "cascara." Tried the MQ versus the LP Tito Puentes and the cascara sounds much better than with the LP that had a very high pitch in comparison with the MQs. Despite that, the MQs provide more volume.
The procedure of setting up the timbales is the easiest in the market.... The stand is strong and the shells or pailas are set up just like the mechanism used for most congas when you want to set them up to a stand. (The "ear type" mechanism placed in two small "screws" with no pressurized system of everything on top of everything like other brands).
The cowbell post is completely independent from the shell and once you set up the shells, all you need to have timbales ready to go is the sliding of the cowbell post. Talking about the cowbell post, it allows you to adjust the distance of the cowbells/blocks from the timbales. There is enoughtcowbell post to adjust it to what the player prefers. With other brands, you just have a limited amount of the cowbell post to adjust and sometimes you have the cowbells too close or in top of the timbales...No option in those brands to set up more "stuff" away or in the cowbell post or close to the player. This cowbell post provides to provide more flexibility for those who want not to have everything so close.
The tuning feature of the timbales from the top instead that from the botton with only 5 lugs instead of 6, is perhaps the best feature..Makes it easier when you have the ocassional tuning during the gig. (The timbales come with a tuning wrench specially made for this timbales that could be used for tuning any congas or bongos that is much better than the standard Pearl Percussion tuning wrench that comes with bongos and congas...I think Pearl should make this tuning wrench the standard one with their other instruments)
The sound and volume???? Great! Much better than the LPs when I did my comparison... (The MQ come with Remo Weatherking Clear Ambassadors and my LP had them too).
These are great looking timbales that dare to be different in its look. It has dark grey shells, in polished steel, and charcoal colored rims that look very sharp.. These timbales are different in look from anything out there...
The timbales come with the green Pearl Clave Block that has a high tone. Compared with the other brand "high pitch" block it provides more volume. For those who play in the latin field, that lately the standard pitch for a block has been much lower, I recommend the orange Pearl Clave Block that provides more volume and projection that the low pitch clave of other brands.
For those looking for the best timbales out there for the best price, you must check the MQ Signature timbales and I will dare to say to buy them with no fear... (Other brands the timbales are $50 to 75 more and are generic in look and sound)...
Saludos!
