Hey all.
I just wanted to know what tip sticks people use. I use woodtip sticks. Vater Powerhouse only come in wood and thats what i use. I prefere wood tips anyway. Used to play nylon though...

Now I have a pair of nylon sticks and a pair of wood sticks, but I think that wood sticks are better...;)

I use wood. Nylons sound good on cymbals but cause more damage to drumheads quicker. Wooden are better all around

I use Vater 1A with nylon tips, and they're really great. They give a lot more definition than wood tipped sticks

I found that wood heads don't have quite as much attack, and the cymbals sounded rather shoddy when played with them, so now I only use nylon tips. Bright cymbal sounds and attack is what I needs.

I find the nylon tips give crisper tones than the wood do, especally on cymbals. I guess it all depends on the type of music you play and the type of tone you are going for.

Its really a mixed preference for me. I like wood because its a bit louder and darker, but i might use a 7A nylon for jazz or something.

both are well and good, its a preference thing. nylon=brilliance, wood=richness. after using nylons, i found i liked wood tips more. now it doesnt relly matter cuz i play vater rock wood tip but i hit with the butt ends for a relly big sound cuz my band makes too much noise

I have to use wood tips , every time I use nylon tips they pop off and usualy end up hitting someone else in the band,,, funny as all heck but it sucks cause the sharp edge goes easily through a drum head

I prefer woodtips because they sound nice and warm on my toms whereas nylontip just don't give me the same sound.

I do use a pair of 5A nylontip for practice 'cos I like the feel they have. I always practice with a heavy stick to build strength, then move to as light a stick as you can get to play.

Also, the biggest thing I have against nylontip is that once the glue on a Zildjian 5A nylontip failed, and the tip flew across the room and I didn't notice so I was just playing with a very sharp, pointy stick, doing fast rolls and what not and the damn thing put a hole in my skin and a lot of dents...so, after that I sorta stayed away from nylon.

I use wood tip. I find that it gives the cymbals a darker sounding stick definition

Depending on the song/ style. I use Nylons for faster upbeat songs for better cymbal attack. And woods for slower songs with more controlled sound especially on cymbals! By the way I use Vick Furth and never had a nylon tip fall off!!!

plaastic tips are easier top roll on because they don't crack like wood tips

Yes, I agree that Nylon sounds nicer on cymbals, but us metal head drummers hit our cymbals with the intention of making as much nasty noise as possible!! The tip doesn't even hit my cymbals!! Down with nylon!!

With this poll i didn't want to start a war about which is better, wood or nylon, i just wanted to see what people prefered. The different tips give different sounds which are suitable to different situations. Like with all things drumming, you're not going to use 2B sticks if you're playing jazz. You also won't use a thin ride cymbal if you're playing metal. I was only interested in what people prefered really.

That's not necessarily true...there are a lot of drummers who do unconventional things...so, you may just find someone playing metal with a Paper Thin Ride...you never know...

Like 'em both. 5A's for me.

I personally like the wood because of the warm sound it gives, and nylon tips tend to break a lot easier.

So I'm not the only one who's had that experience.

I have found over the years that a drummer needs a variety of tools to get the job done. Although I have a favorite stick, I use whatever stick thats needed to get the desired sound i'm looking for in that musical situation. Sometimes its a wood tip sometimes nylon. Sometimes its a heavier stick sometimes a lighter one. We drummers need to have a full arsenal when we make music.
Thanks, Rich.

I bought a pair of Aquarian graphite sticks around
Christmas and they're holding up quite well, they
are very resistant to chipping, my wood sticks look
like a beaver's been gnawing on them after a week

The ones I have are about a 5B size and are a bit
on the heavy side, I might order some smaller ones
next time, plus they're only about $10 a pair, much
cheaper than Aheads

I think nylon tips give the best sound on cymbals and have a better bounce on the drum head, they give an excellent "ping" sound on the ride cymbals as well

wood tip .... nylon tip got off frequently

Yeah, I like the bounce on drums, and sound on cymbals that nylon gives. Also , i tried wood, and the tips would chip very easily. that was why i initially switched.

Yes much better ping on the cymbals. I, personally, have never lost a nylon tip. Attack and ping. Go nylon.

I actually have a pair of both wood and nylon tip sticks, fusion-round tip. However, there was a post one time on a different thread that spoke of applying coats of CLEAR fingernail polish on the wood tips for a "faux nylon tip effect". I tried it and it works quite well. The only thing is after playing a bit with them you may have to re-apply the clear coat on the tips but I thought it was a good compromise between the two sounds. Give it a go and see what you think.

i just switched to nylon because i was annoyed with how fast the wood tips would chip and break. i use 5A Vic Firth.

Hey jeff, does this help wood tips from not cracking as easily? or is it the same?

Why do you like wood tips better? I have tried both and like Nylon better because I feel they have a better feel and more control. Wood tips seem soft to me.

I like both, but prefer nylon, because I feel it has a more clearer, crispier sound on the cymbals.

i think as far as nylon tips and breakage go, it depends on the stick. i have used vic firth for years and the tips rarley broke. recently for christmas i received 2 pairs of Zildjian 5A dip nylon and the POS broke almost immiediatly on both i was quite angry so i think i will stick with Vic Firth 5AN nylon tip sticks

every time I use nylon tips they pop off

I had this trouble with Vic Firth 5B nylons. It only happend when I hit my china though.

Nylons sound good on cymbals but cause more damage to drumheads quicker.

I found this too. When I got my first pair of nylons I when through 2 snare heads in one gig! I had never before, or have ever since done that.

The only cymbal I tend to hit with the tip is the ride. In this case the nylon tips do give a lot more definition and cut through the music more. But is this benifit really worth the extra drum head damage and the possiblity of losing the nylon tip itself mid-song.

I prefer wood because of the way at makes cymbals sound...Nylon tips make my ride sound too shimmery, and they have a lot less bounce...with wood i can play a lot faster and more articulate.
