I have a MRX kit in Platinum Mist. How come my drums look nothing like the color on Pearl's home page. Mine look more like a natural color than a light grey or platinum as pictured in catalogs or the web site? Is this a matter of lighting, because even under different lighting, mine don't take on much of a platinum color?

I really like the color. I agree they look rather plain when viewed up close. But at a distance they are quite striking. Especially under lights. That color is made for the big stage.

I can certainly understand your concern. I have experienced the same. I based my color selection from the Masters Series Catalog a few years back and loved what I saw on the front cover. The inside photos also appear to be very platinum color with hardly any wood grain visible. When I received my drums they were as you discribed. The color should be called "Dark Natural Maple with a very faint mist to match platinum (but you must look close to see the platinum in the right light)" I wish that I would have seen an actual kit before purchase but life goes on. Pearl did offer to return them for a different color but I chose to have them custom painted.
See my post entitled Custom Painted Masters Custom MMX in "Show us you kits".

I also noticed the same thing.
I was at the drum shop checking out an mmx. I originally thought the colour was natural. Then the tech said it was platinum mist. At the time I was unaware of the platinum colour. That particular kit had gold hardware. I think the gold trim looks best with the platinum mist.

bc3,

I have a set of BRX's on order now with Platinum Mist and black hardware. I too was very disappointed by the color selector on the website and the pics I later saw on this forum. I ordered it in a rush because I beat the March 1st price increase by 2 hours, and now I hope I'm not going to be too disappointed by what I see this August when the kit arrives.

I wish I could change the order to either Diamond Burst or Emerald Fade.

How would you go about custom-painting a set of well-laquered drums??? Hopefully I won't have to do this. I don't want to be a PITA and demand that Pearl take back my drums after waiting 6 months for them to find out the color is NOTHING like the color selector.

Plat Mist Rules the Planet.

In a flat light the drums look like a misty blond color.

Under stage lights..............Bam!

#151 picks up stage lighting and takes on the character of the stage

If you have the drums in your house or on a stage without decent lighting, these drums WILL look plain.

Here is my Platinum Mist BRX. They are stunning under stage lighting. They have a yellow tint due to the florescent light above them. If you have them ordered........RELAX........they grow on me more every day.

Flyin6,

That pic looks much better. I'll have to darken my drum room and get some fancy track lighting to shine down on the kit to mimic stage lighting. It's either that or bust out some Sherwin-Williams.

Nice kit! If you don't mind, how do you find pinstripes on your tom batters? (They are pinstripes right?) Thanks.

Smoke N Drums

My toms must "sing" I really like the pins. They are punchy with alot of tone. They are also very forgiving.

I've done shows with ambassadors and a drum went out of tune. Every time I hit it it was like OUCH! With a pinstripe you'll play the drum that is out and notice it, say to yourself "that needs some attention."

I've had pins out of tune and when I went to tune the drum, a tension rod was finger loose. The drum had still sounded ok.

I play electric blues/rock. We do get loud. The pins work fine for this. I'll go with a single ply head for quieter stuff.

ALSO: Pinstripes have 2 lives!

1st Life: They will sound punchy and tonefull at a low-mid tuning. After awhile I'll "pound" the tone out of them.

2nd Life: Tune them up a step or two and the tone returns.

My MRX badges say "Extra" Do your drums have glue rings?

If so then they are MMXs

mrxnatural

I actually haven't recieved the drums yet, these pictures were taken at the store I am buying them from. I was told that they do not have re-inforcement rings...I thought "extra" referred to the drums before they designated them as MMX / MRX, but I could be wrong. They are used, so I didn't get to specify the type of shells I got, I'm just happy that I got a good deal. So now I wonder if they are actually mrx or not...I'm going to post some pics on this site when I get them.

As I understand it;

MMXs are "plain"
MRXs state "extra" <---- more plies
BRXs state "studio" <---- Birch is the "studio" wood
MHXs state Mahogony Classic <---or words to that effect

BTW: I only use my MRX 14x6.5 snare for loud/outdoor shows.

I played outdoors at a local Harley Davidson Dealer this past Saturday and Sunday (they asked us back !) and used my MRX snare...... I LOVE THAT DRUM !!!!!

mrxnatural

That makes perfect sense to me, I'd say your right, but I wonder why they told me there were no glue rings...I was hoping they were mrx's, I've heard other people praise the snares too! Now I'm anxious to know...Thanks.

When I got my MRX kit, the Floor tom was an MMX. I used it until the MRX floor came in. It blended well with a warm sound that was a bit less "in your face" as the MRXs.

MMXs are also killer drums. I was shopping for a kit when my wife "surprised" me with a DW kit.

I'd say MMXs can do louder/harder better than MRXs can do softer/jazzy.

Always remember than head selection plays as big a part in the overall sound as the drums themselves.

Hopefully you'll get what you want up front.

Thanks, I hope so! I guess you weren't disappointed with the DW's!

The DWs are top notch drums. My personal preference would be MMXs.

I gig enough that having two kits is either actually needed or a big time saver. (I keep one kit on the band bus all the time.)

Pearl hardware is better. I have to "juggle" two types of mounting systems when I gig. It would be easier just to "grab and go"

I wish we had a bus :D Turns out that somebody else has an mrx and an mmx kit with the exact same badges...interesting.

Does anyone have any pics of platinum mist with satin chrome hardware, or would u like to comment on the match? Joe

Platinum mist is definitly one of my favorite colours, I love it. I think that chrome / satin are pretty neutral and would look good on any finish, but I haven't seen the combination yet. There are a few pics of platinum mist on black and gold hardware floating around here somewhere.

That's the best looking pic yet for Platinum mist that I've seen. If mine arrive with that appearance, it's all good. I did order them with black hardware, so that should make it interesting, hopefully make them look more "aggressive."

MRX Natural---

Sorry I have been out of town for a couple of days. The kick drum on my kit is a 18x22, but the 8x10 tom makes it look big.

I love the color...Vinnies kit put me over the edge, I was leaning toward Antique Gold.
