I just bought this african imported djembe from a non-music store. it cost me $120, its made of wood, and its rope tuned. I read somewhere that sometimes there are djembes that are actually decorative items made to look like drums. I didn't buy mine at a music store so I'm really worried it might be like a piece of furniture or somethin' and not a real djembe. it sounds good though. the colour of the skin is really light though, very unlike the colour of som 'real' djembes I've had the honor of playing. Is this an indication of anything though? I'm not too sure.

I have seen many authentic African drums sold in stores other than music stores only, in Erie, Pa where my lady is from they have head shops in which they sell some very nice Djembes and Ashikos. It sounds to me like you have a nice drum and the skin colour or shade is different in goat or calf skins etc, if you feel the need then take it to a djembefola or someone very experienced in drum making. See if the drum is carved from one log and not different pieces like staves the way congas are sometimes made. But like you said it sounds good to you and I feel that this is the important thing, there are also some very good handmade drums here in the states so if its not from Africa don't be too upset. Enjoy and play on player.. :)

have any pictures of the djembe? If it sounds good odds are its a real djembe.

That is a nice design on the djembe. The rope or strings in this case, look a little thin but the determining factor is how it sounds. It does not look like you were scammed. The drum looks of high quality.
