On May 22nd I had the pleasure of seeing my friend Jorge Santana once again perform with his old band Malo, Jorge still a standout in the northern California area was great as ever. But the one thing that stands out when you see this legend band is the percussion section, Congero Tony Menjivar is a very experienced player with some great skills and chops. Timbalero Gibby Ross is also a player to checkout, being around for sometime now and having played with some great musicians in the past you can see that he has the chops to prove it and does live. In talking to him in the past and asking him about playing he told me that his biggest influence was of course Tito Puente, after playing with him Tito even gave him a set of his own Timbales. Now I consider that a pretty good praise coming from the great Tito himself. If you have a chance to see this band I reccomend it, especially if Jorge is playing with them. In the past they have had some great percussionist in the band such as Raul Rekow, Jorge Bermudez, Francisco Aquabella, Victor Pantoa, Carlos Caro, and the awesome Leo 'Pepe' Rosales.
