View Full Version : Creating Dream Kit - Opinions Sought

I've pretty well settled on the Masterwords series as the base of my dream kit. I'm looking for opinions as to how to put it together...
I would like a kit whose drums do not get a lot of reverbiration, but also doesn't sound so quick that it sounds like a piccolo share with the springs off. I'm looking for a quick, deep, "thud" of a sound from my toms, and a very quick (imagine Slipknot - the thud not the actual kicking) but deep bass drum.
Do I want to mess with a mix of plys, or keep them one type of wood?
This is what I'm imagining, so please let me know where I'm off:
Toms:
Mahogany 6 ply
8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 14x16, 16x18
Bass:
Mahogany 8 ply, 16x22
Thanks!

for the deep fast thud i would go (toms) with 6 plys 4 plys birch 2plys mohagany
floor toms - 6 ply- 2ply birch outer- 4 mohagany inner
bass 8 or 10 plys
4 plys birch 4 ply maho***
or 5 plys birch 5plys mahogany
this is only my opinion but birch and maho*** are going to give the deepest sound

my master works is as follows
9 x 10 4 ply maple and 2 ply outer tamo
10 x 12 4 ply maple and 2 outer tamo
14 x 15 4 ply maple 2 ply inner mahagany and 2 outer tamo
18 x 20 bass 6 ply maple 2 inner mahagany 2 outer tamo
5 x 14 snare 6 ply maple and 2 inner mahagany and 2 outer tamo
i have very deep "thuds" as you call them with my set up the bass drum is incredible as well is the snare the finish is called scuba blue tamo
it fades from blue to green and back to blue but you can see the beautiful tamo wood grain underneath the color with all black hardware and black optimounts they look and sound fantastic i have played alot of different drums in my day (tama ludwig premier dw fibes etc...) and i am not saying masterworks is the best drum ever but in my opinion it is absolutly the best drum i have ever played or looked at but you know what they say about opinions hope this helped you lets us know what you came up with

If you like slipknots sound then I would suggest look at his kit and see what wood it is made of and what sizes his drums are.

Since you mentioned that you liked the sound of Joey Jordinson's bass drum sound of Slipknot, the you should get an 18'' x 22'' kick instead of 16'' x 22''. Joey uses a 20'' x 22'' made by Orange County Drum & Percussion. Try and go as big as possible when trying to achieve his sound. Too bad Pearl doesn't make bass drums that big, which they should. I hope this helps you with your decision making.
Later:cool:
keep in mind.... what you hear on a recording, or even live will be very processed and touched up etc. Also... loads of artists randomly swap drums during the recording process, in an attempt to get a different sound.

yes i know, i took a tour of OCDP about 3 weeks ago and the Vice - President showed me this deep purple bass drum that was 14''x 24'' and he said that Joey had also used that on some recordings as well.

That bass drum was'nt used on Iowa, most likley it was on Slipknot. I have the same kit Jordison uses with a few add ons and i can tell you the Toms are 6 ply and the bass drums are 9 ply maple. The kick sound on the albums is Powerstroke III heads with folded wool blankets and sometimes a towel. On tours, its a block of foam rubber that contours to the shell with Shure SM91 mic.

that 'block of foam' is the tama power kick, a sweetass little device which makes your kick sound magical, available @ musiciansfriend.com for $50

Andy, Its not a powerkick, its homemade, its a 7 inch high block of rigid white foam rubber.
At the show in Belfast UK, he used a rented kit, since his normal kit/riser combo is so large and heavy and it cant be used at all venues. The drum kit is for the most part permanatley attached to the riser, so they have to rent kits when they cant use it. Thats why you saw him with a Pearl kit. He is not endorsed by Pearl, He is endorsed by OCDP.
wouldnt you agree the powerkick does basically the same thing

slipknot1 - do you have the Disasterpieces DVD? what size drums does it look like joey is using? on ocdrum.com, it says his toms are 8,10,12,14,16,& 18, but in concert, he is only using 5 toms, and it looks like maybe an 8, 10, 12, 16, & 18? his two floor toms look huge, like maybe an 18 & 20, but joey is a small guy and comparative dimensions don't exactly work with him. What do you think?

The OCDP site kit specs are a mess and are being updated. The sizes they mention on the site were the original sizes made for his "Purple Riff" kit when Slipknot first came out on a label.
After that came his Purple OCDP Acrylic kit which was used through the TTE and Ozzfest 01' tour. After that, came the Pledge of Allegiance tour and that was the start of his latest kit, the 6 ply maple "Black Serpentine" kit. That is the kit used on the "Disasterpieces" DVD. A new kit is planned for there next tour.
Both the Purple Acrylic kit and the Black Serpentine kit consist of the following sizes:
8x10, 9x12, 12x14 rack toms, 16x16 and 16x18 floor toms and two 20x22 bass drums. All toms are mounted on Gauger RIMS mounts (Older steel versions) and use Pearl Tom arms. The rack is a pieced together Gibraltar rack.
That kit is obviously bolted in place on the riser so the layout never changed the entire tour. On venues where the riser was too big, he used rented kits.
Pedals are Tama HP900P Powerglide pedals with the IC wood beaters and p/n HP900-7H heavy pedal springs. Tension is set to max. The Hi-Hat is a Tama IC HH905.
Joey is a small guy, 5'3 (5'4 on a good day) so the kit looks bigger then it is. The kit is setup fairly low to be easier to use. But if you are my height (6'5) its not very easy to play. And if the harness chair is in place, its IMPOSSIBLE.
yea, i always questioned why joey would use an 8" tom as specified on the site.
the smallest id want would be a 10
lol in actuality, the kit slipknot1 described is what id want as far as the drums. 10 12 14 16 18, 20x22
btw, how ARE the 20x22's? ive always thought thatd be a sweet depth for a 22 bass drum!
SLIPKNOT1
12-21-2002, 10:16 PM
20X22's are like CANNONS. They are great. I use wood beaters on Powerstroke III heads and the sound is unreal.
i just ordered rubber beaters instead of wood, for one reason; wood = faster head damage, and im not rich... kind of poor actually :/
have you ever used rubber IC beaters?
SLIPKNOT1
12-21-2002, 11:19 PM
All i do to eliminate any chance of head damage is use Remo "Falam Slam" kevlar head pads. I would use them with any beaters other then felt.
My bass drum batter heads last 6 months or longer with them. I tried rubber beaters once, they did'nt give as much attack as the wood ones did. Try them and see how you like them.
well dude after my christmas totals ill have at LEAST $50 left over, more than enough for the kevlar pad and the wood beater
i did howeever order a slug percussion bass drum impact pad... any experience on those?

Damn, slipknot1, I thought I was a slipknot crack-baby! cool, man... thanks for the insite.
20x22s? who'd have thought. They are killer.
I'm 6'4", so I can understand what you mean.
Thanks again for the insight.

One other thing - in listening to the Disasterpieces DVD, the OCDP vented snare sound made me lose any appeal I might have had before for it. It sounds too 'tingy' - too much reverbaration behind it.

Carl said that 20" deep kicks might be in the making in the future for MW i think!
you should try mahog., birch for the toms and maple, mahog. for the floor toms.

During Disasterpieces he was still an OCDP artist and WAS using his 30 ply 7x12 OC snare. It was the ONLY snare he used during the P.O.A. tour.
Joey (as we all know) is now a Pearl artists and uses a Pearl snare live now but its not the Tico Torres.
Sorry I may have easily missed this but:
Opus, did you order the MW in the end? Is this the kit Andy is referring to that is keeping mine company in the "September container"?

There seems to be some confusion with the Joey jordison setup,
His Disasterpieces kit sizes were as follows:
8x7
10x8
12x9
16x16
18x16
22x20
22x20
12x7 30 ply vented snare
This is the kit he was using.

Yeah true story, there will be a lot of mixing involved which gives the bass drum that sound.

7X12, 30 ply maple snare with three 2-1/4" vents.
Joey did not use an 8" tom with the Serpentine kit EVER.
