Barney
what are the sizes of your other drums-that might help the decision. Also, I wonder if the majority of people chose the 9 X 12 because that is the size that usually comes with kits or b/c they really like the sound over a 10 x 12 ???

interesting point coop.....i just always preferred the 9x12 over the 10x12, but when it came time to order everything custom, I went with the 8x12 because that's my favorite size, and to me it sounds the best

i just love the sound of shallow toms :D.. id get the 12x9 cause u have that "extra space" to put it low, while still having the sound of a 12x10 you will just lose a tidbit of sustain and have more attack, but i love shallow toms :D.. i wanna get a shortstack drums :D

Go with the 12x9. Hands down.
You'll barely notice the difference in sustain but you'll get great
stick attack.
The shorter, 'alternative' depths resonate much better also.

Groove-
you're probably insane; however, the 8 x 12 does sound interesting-I'm curious as to how it would sound????

8x12 all the way! I love it, when/if I ever get a masterworks, I may even cut down to a 7x12 or 7x13, not quite sure yet.

GrooveMaster

right on Wookie....I would go with a 7x10 and 8x12 together if I could.....

Coop- You'd be surprised....the 8x12 sings, and has a good round sounds to it...i love it....i have two of them

Groove-
let me guess, one with the MW kit and one with the BRX?? How is the sustain on it? Is the sound full or thin?

BEWARE ... stay away from the 13 :D

The 12 x 9 is awesome with the huge advantage that it can be moved in a bit closer, which is excellent for a short arse like me!

Riza-I can relate to the short thing! I'm 5'6" and I'm always having problems setting things up JUST RIGHT.

Fredzs-I agree about the 13! My first Pearl kit was a 7-piece world that came with 10,12,13,14, and 16 toms. After awhile I took the 13 off b/c I just couldn't get the sound I wanted from it. Using 2" intervals worked great for me-that is why my BRX is 8,10,12,14,16. Just preference I guess.

Barney-I think I would go with the 12x9 if you already have the 13"; however, if you don't have the 13" and you decide NOT to get it, I would go for the 12x10.

Just my opinion. Try and see if you can goto a local music shop and hear the difference. I would still be interested in hearing the 12x8!!! Might work well with your sizes????!!!?

Barney - I've got the 13 x 10 also and I have to say that it is one of the loves of my life (apart from the rest of my kit and the wife and kids of course!) I probably use the 13 more than my other 2 toms put together.

Coop - At 5'5" I win the short drummer prize.

Hi....As you probably know, the resonator head prodices the sound. When you strike the batter the sound travels downward to the resonator head......a 9x12 will repond faster because the sound will get there quicker than a 10x12. Thsi si also where woods come in. Various woods will abosorb and oscillate the sound as it travels through the shell. I notice a 10" depth has a bit more boom sound...but the 9x12 has great attack and responds faster. I also had a 12x14 and moved to an 11x14 for the same reason. That drum really sings.

Good Luck

I agree, the odd diameter toms are very difficult to tune. When I had a 13, I ended up placing pinstripes on the drums and that gave me a fat sound, but saved me the aggravation of trying to get any resonance out of the 13". By the way, what specifically is your tuning method for that 9x12?

Thanks

For a good sonic match you should go for 12x9 & or 10x8, 8x7.

I think this depends on what style of music you want to play. The 12x10 Tom has more Power, the 12x9 provides a variety of sounds so it fits in almost every musical context. I bought a 12x9 to play jazz-, latin-, bigband-, funk- and popmusic and it works;)

I currently have a 10x12 tom but am looking to go with a 9x12 in my next set. I think I will enjoy the slightly higher tone of this drum. Other than this, no particular reason, always willing to check out something a little different.:D

Well, comparing my 2 main rack toms, 8x10, and 11x12, i concluded that the shallower tom had more attack sound, and the deeper power sized tom has less attack and more boom to it, but thats what everyone else has said so i guess the theory holds true.:D

i'd say 12x12".. if that's available..
i got 12x12" tom and i really like it.. it sound really round and warm but in the same time it has really good attack in the sound and sounds heavy and loud and clear.. something like that heh :)

of course it depends on what sound you are looking for and what music you play.. i play heavy music and i like the loud, dominating, heavy sound of deep toms.. but that doesn't say you'll like my sound. as simple as that.. almost :)

sit down and listed trough a lot of music and try to feel what sound you like the most.. or you go to your local drum store and try toms of different depths..

good luck

I have a 12/10 and it sounds good but when heard the 12/9
I liked it beter.

When you strike the batter, the sound travels to the resonator and that's the head that makes the sound. When you have less distance between the heads, the shell speaks faster...thus, more attack in the shallower toms (9x12). I had all deep, toms on my last kit and have all shallow toms on my new MMX. A great change, but who knows what will be popular in 5 years......
