MRX for me, I like the slightly thincker shell for warmth & projection. Never been a fan of reinforcing hoops. Although I am going for a 4 ply with my Masterworks, 2 ply maple & 2 Ply Tamo.

I've got a 6-piece birch kit (5 toms, 1 bass) and it's the most beautiful sounding kit in the world. With Evans heads...sweeeeet. I have shallower depths because I like my toms to "sing" for me. It's sort of a hard sound to describe, but "singing" is what they actually do. And Birch is the most "singin" wood. Wouldn't go with anything except Pearl Masters BRX 6-ply Birch.

I just got an MMX as my first "pro" kit and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The sound is just great overall. Nice and warm, and with really good low end. Their sound makes the drums very versatile with either one or two-ply heads.

hey carl,
How much would it cost to get some of that Hot Lime Green Satin Flame for a standard rock-sized 6 piece? Where can you get it? Do you have to get somebody who knows what they're doing to put it on, or can you do it yourself? Because I would seriously be interested in getting some of that for my set. :D My set is a wrapped finish by the way, it's a Forum.
I have an MMX kit. I bought them because they where called the best "near field" sounding Master drums. I wanted the 8" and 10" toms to have some low end punch after the attack, and they do. When I got them I thought that these are the best sounding drums of all time! But keep in mind this was the first masters kit I ever played. A friend of a friend got a new BRX kit, so I brought over a 10", 12", and bass drum MMX over to his place to compare once and for all. Same heads, same depth, same tuning. I figured the MMX would blow birch away and this guy would be crying. But damn! the birch sounds like magic. They where much easier to tune, I mean they just kept sounding good and my toms took much longer to tweak. The 10" birch seemed to have a tad bit less low end than the thin maple, but bareley detectable. The 12" sounded similar, the BRX because it was thicker had a more solid sound, but I wouldn't say where obviously louder. The MMX's bass drum had a bit lower punch sound also.Lastly the MMX are a bit more resonant. So my favorites are now MMX and BRX, and something tells me if I had heard an MRX then that would be on my list also.
-Lavo
Heres my MMX kit, everyone loves to look at drums!

07-14-2002, 08:46 AM
I know the MMX kits are supposed to resonate a little better,
but arn't they supposed to be not as loud as the MRX kits?
pearl4life
07-14-2002, 01:17 PM
mrx are a slight bit louder, but im a big fan of mmx.
pearl4life
07-14-2002, 01:26 PM
is there a difrence in price between the mmx and the brx??
MMX and MRX cost about 20% more than BRX. Maple as a raw material, costs more than Birch. I got the MMX because I didn't want to feel that there is something better out there. But all the Masters series are in the same league.

Carl Peterson
07-18-2002, 07:54 AM
Those sizes would LIST for $8,070.00...
pearl4life
07-18-2002, 08:13 AM
wow 8 grand???? thats a little to much to spend on a drumset for me. i think that 4000 is the most i would spend. but hey if you realy want that set, then save your penneys.
Carl Peterson
07-18-2002, 08:26 AM
Like I said..Thats list price..not actual price..
pearl4life
07-18-2002, 10:14 AM
i realy hope that the list is higher than actual price. and i hope that you can get a good discount.
From my experience you usually can get drums for 40% off list price. That may only be if the dealer has the kit in stock,Im not sure, but when your ready, shop around. Why kill yourself dreaming about Masterworks, Masters series sound just as sweet and you can have two shell packs for the price of one Masterworks!
Carl Peterson
07-18-2002, 03:34 PM
You need to play both before you deceide...They're not the same kit....
Hiya Carl,
I didn't necessarily get to jam down on a Masterworks kit, but I did smack on the toms at a drum store. It was a 4ply maple 2ply mahogany and it did sound great, the larger sizes especially had a great thump and warmth .Meanwhile I was also smacking on an MMX and BRX. Now my ear may not be the best for discerning subtle tones, but they all where equally impressive to me. I play an MMX and was considering a masterworks. Now Im considering another BRX shellpack then I wouldn't have to sell my MMX and I can hoard away.
So what your saying to me, is that a 6ply maple Masters compared to a 6ply maple Masterworks (all things being equal) there will be a serious difference in sound quality? Now heres the hard question.....How so?
Thanks
-Lavo

07-19-2002, 07:44 AM
Lavo..
Hey man..Im with you on the MMX and BRX..I love BOTH of those myself as stand alone kits...The shells on your MW kit are totally the same due to the fact that the kit, let's say Maple, is from the same tree.Same as if you use any other wood..Birch, Mahogany as composite plys, (same Birch tree, same Mahogany tree, etc). Your MW kit is made all at once..Its just an overall beautifully matched sounding kit !!!
Hey Carl,
That does sound pretty sweet. I know DW offered a limited addition 5 piece maple kit that was made from one tree. It came in only one color and list for around 10,000.00. So MW is looking like a great bargan frmom that perspective.

I'm very fortunate to play everyones gear..I have yet to see anything that comes even in the rear view mirror to Masterworks..
CASE CLOSED........;)
GrooveMaster
07-23-2002, 08:45 AM
I agree with Carl...i play many different kits, and even though I love my Masters kits, the Master Works are like the "Perfect" drums...each of the drums sounds like they belong with the other one...almost like they're a drum family!! And the finish!?? forget about it....nothing comes anywhere near masterworks!!
Groovemaster,
what is the shell config on your Masterworks kit? and by all means compare and contrast to your masters kit. Thanks for your help, Im suffering from anxiety trying to pin point what I would want in a Masterworks kit.
Thanks.
GrooveMaster
07-23-2002, 07:53 PM
18x22kick, 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 13x16 toms and a 5.5x14 snare finished in iridescent white sparkle with gold rims...i think the whole kit is a combo of Maple/Mahogony...sound is more consistent from drum to drum than masters series i have pics if your interested!
We all love to look at drums! Bring em on.

Wow Groove, you have plenty of neat stuff. I wonder how you're able to afford all this, especially considering your young age. And musicians aren't well known to be particularly wealthy people as long as they don't play in overly successful bands. How come?
GrooveMaster
08-01-2002, 06:32 PM
well, i guess i've been very fortunate to be able to play in a lot of different projects...not just "bands"...i do session work, theater musicals, i teach and "fill in" for a lot of different bands all at once...so, i can afford to buy drums, by drumming.
Groove Master,
That is an insane collection of kits? What's the kit you always go to first? And why no birch in the collection?
GrooveMaster
08-02-2002, 07:46 AM
well, first let me tell you that the collection you saw on my site isn't all still there...this is what im using now
Pearl Masterworks in white sparkle (on the site)
Pearl SRX in vintage fade (on the site)
Pearl BRX in Midnite fade (not on the site, in same setup as SRX kit)
Pearl Millenium Frost BRX (currently up for sale, not on site)
Pearl MMX in Wine Red (played by Dennis Chambers, the kit is his exact setup, not on site)
DW short stack kit in Black Velvet finish (not on site)
DW kit in Natural Satin oil (not on site)
Ayotte kit in red laquer finish (on site)
Fibes kit is purple marble finish (not on site), and my new MW is on the way....
so i do have birch (the midnite kit) and lately i've been bouncing between the masterworks kit and the black DW

Hi everyone!
at first I wanted a kit that could give me some good bass sound with all the sounds and when I looked at the whole catalogue,
at first I thought the best kit would be a MHX but then when I learnt there was only one color I went for the MMX in pltinum myst and I'm now thinking about how making its sound with more bass...
cause I just love the punch that comes when you hit the toms but not quite happy with ambassadors heads that come with the kit!
With my ancient kit I played with pinstripes at the batter side and coated ambassadors at the timber side, I might do the same when i have some more money or put straight 2 pinstripes by tom but it might be too much of bass I don't know...
what do you guys think?

I play metalpunk with a pearl mmx kit.
They sound really sweet and you can play any type of music with them. But maybe a brx would do better. They cut true more in live performance and have more attack.

I will own a BRX in the future because that is what I need. I will be doing session work in my music career so I need a birch kit. Also, I do like birch more than maple because it has a darker more powerful sound and it is just what I like to hear.

Tough question for me. I really love my mrx live and really love my mmx in the studio. I guess I might be an mmx guy at heart BUT an mrx guy in a practical sense. Does that make sense? Prob. not SO - I say; mmx sound better when playing quietly at home. hell, the defernce between the two is SMALL anyway.
Love the Green Masterworks shown above - BEAUTIFUL. But I think tamo isn't necessarily worth the 6 months and 2G extra? BUT I-COULD-BE-WRONG!!MW kits are too expensive for me anyway... family guy and all
Love all the kits WILL NEVER switch companies - EVER EVER EVER!!
BRX sound fabulous also (just a LITTLE different) and you save more than a couple hundred bucks with BRX!

I own a MRX kit because of the 6 ply shell with no glue rings!
It's the sound.

I have a MMX in orange bernish and they sound awesome but
I voted for MHX because I love that fat worm deep low sound
and the red mahogany is beautiful. If I ever get a new kit that's
the one for me.Jesus is Lord

MHX has got a lot to offer - lows & warmth - it's a classic sound!
You have a great kit - it's all just a matter of what you like huh.
One day I plan on a MW kit - maybe a Elvin Jones type of vibe with an 18"x14" kick

Small kicks are neat. More tone than thump:

It is a 16"x 16" Jungle Bass. It plays very differently than my 22"x16" MRX Bass. More "off the head." It produces a really neat low growling toneful sound.
Not having a port in the front head produces a bit of "kick back" that takes some getting used to.
I use a clip-on muffler on the reso and moon gels on the batter get the sound I want.
This really shows the versatility of Pearl Masters.
Needless to say, I don't play speed metal on this

I've been thinking of using that JG-16 myself - for weddings and stuff - just because it's small.

I use it mainly for lounge gigs. Beyond the size benefits, it does have a sound unique to small bass drums.
You can get the standard thump from a 20" Any smaller than that and you get into a different "sound zone."

I have an MMX Gold set (4 sale) and a BRX set. The BRX set sounds better to me, but I'm behind the kit and don't get to hear the crowd hears.

I have only ever played all the kinds of Pearl drums except the 6 ply BRX's and Mahogany MHX's.
I first had an Export Kit in Cobalt Blue
Then I bought a used 4 pc kit which turned out to be a hodgepodge of an 8 and 10 in MRX, a 16x16 in 4 Ply Birch, and a 4 ply Masters Virgin 22x16 Kick. Having sold the 8 and 10 and a later added 13x11, I continue to play this kit with a 13x10 MMX, 22x16 MMX, and a 16x16 Masters Studio 4 ply floor tom.
After that, I got what I can only call my dream kits at bargain Prices. For a grand total of $1600 I got my 5pc number 39/100 1997 Limited Edition Silver Sparkle kit. a 10x10,12x10,14x12,16x14 and 22x16, but missing the number 39 snare. If anyone ever hears of a lone number 39/100 Limited Edit. Silver Sparkle snare made in April '97, have the owner contact me. PLEEEEEEEEEESE!!!!
Lucky me, I added a second silver 6 pc set number 79/100 that included the Matching Snare and 2 double tom stands for $1700 one year later.
I was told by Gene or Carl that these Made in Japan Limited editions were the Precursor to MW. However you slice it, I have 11 of the Prettiest, great sounding MMX drums Hand made in Japan.
So, having played Exports, MMX, MRX and BRX 4 ply's,
My alltime fav drums will always be my 2 Silver Sparkle Limited Edition 1997 Japanese made kits. The other 98 Limited edition Owners in the World will surely agree they are awesome Pearls like no other.

I still cant decide whether I like my mmx or mrx kit better... HELP!
Just kidding! The mmx is more rez. and the mrx plays a little better... just my opinion.
BUT My MMX Diamond gloss is the most awesome looking kit I've ever seen!!
#165 Daimond Gloss - check it out on Pearls Namm highlight page, Damn! - I do need a matching snare, any recommendations for what might look good with it? Pics anyone?

HOW DO YOU LIKE THE MMX snare ???? I'm thinking on getting a matching one AND I like my MRX. I think MMX might be a touch more resonant and fat than MRX.
What do you think?
Anybody?
Thanks!

PJ,
I have 2 MMX snares. One Silver Sparkle, and one Opal.
I love both and even though they are both MMX each has a different sound. My guess is different trees, different sound and also different batter head and tension makes each sound different too.
If you get an MMX,,,,, having the MRX already, you will soon find out which you like better.

It's the only Drum set video - we do have videos on the percussion stuff - go to our main web site - some of the stuff can be down loaded.
Also there's a Hollywood movie called Drum line that is a very hip with a MP vibe.

...lots of work though. I heard Pearl lugs w/tuning rods can run you up to $5 piece. - $90 for a floor tom, $50 for a 10"
Doesn't sound bad after you figure what you might spend on a new kit!! Please post pictures and good luck with the flame paint job! That sounds REALLY tough!
...but you can do it!
Peace

Thanks PJ,
Not too much work really,,,,, after doing carpentry all day and mechanic work on cycles and cars and tractors in my spare time.
Drums are like coasting,,,,, as far as hard work goes.
Since my post, I have bought some cheap arts n crafts paints to do some test runs on flame designs and airbrush techniques.
If all goes well in the next month or so, I will get started on laying out the design on the shells and then hopefully be painted and playing by June.
Now to you MR kickkiller,,, I can't PM you anymore, so it is good to hear from you in the Threads, Mr Midnight fade player.

I definitely think the BRX has low end but that it has more attack and 'cut' ((like a drum that might be tuned higher?)) than the maple.
The mrx is better than the MMX for death metal and heavy music FOR SURE. The mmx is like a jazz or soft rock type kit and it is MUCH harder to tune than the MRX and BRX. I think the BRX is awesome and a MUCH better bang for the buck than the MRX but I would say do some research on birch -v- maple drums and then go with the brx or mrx depending on what you find out. ???
I thought the mrx and mmx kits that I owned sounded similar (but I also think my mmx kit sounds VERY similar to my DW kit... I play too much and listen to the music not just the drums.
I KNOW you cant go wrong Pearl drums are the best mass produced drums ever, and there will never be anyone better at it!
So pick maple (mrx) or birch (brx) and then you wont have nay problems ;o)
You'll LOVE what you get, no matter what, trust me.

MRX for me, I like the slightly thincker shell for warmth & projection. Never been a fan of reinforcing hoops. Although I am going for a 4 ply with my Masterworks, 2 ply maple & 2 Ply Tamo.
whats wrong with reinforcement hoops?

If BRX is so desired by everybody, why is it cheaper? It seems like it should be more expensive just because of the great demand...

I think it's more desired exactly because of the fact it's the cheapest. People who desperatly want a masters and are short on cash (many youngsters) can start with BRX. It's the only masters they can afford.
