I found a Masterworks snare..
Suposedly with smoke damage but as you can see in the picture there's nothing wrong.
I changed the top head and it sounds very good but mabe a bit too dry becouse of the diecast hoops(might try triple flanged hoops).
The guy said they sold the shellkit and the snare remained and then a fire broke out in the store.

The serial is 004027.
I'd love to know the layout of the plies and how this color is called.
It looks like maple with reinforcement hoops, the workmanship is superb.
What does a 5.5x14 masterworks like mine go for new?

950! wow, i paid a lot less.
The flash makes it a bit brighter than it is, it's more red, chrome hardware.
Thanks for the info so far, i will email in a week for sure.
Here's another one of my snares(not Pearl sorry):

That last snare thats upside down is an old 80s? Tama Superstar.
I'm not really sure about the wood but i think its 14! ply birch.
The outerply is a very dark brown matallic laquer, looks almost like black.
The drum is extremely heavy, i call it the tank.
It has a high pitched funky piercing sound, great for loud music.
Would sound great in metal, wich i'm not playing at the moment:)
It has no muffler wich is kind of unusual for Tama snares from this era.
But great becouse mufflers suck anyway:)

your snares appear to be too long for the head? did tama design them that way or are they really just too long? i'm not familiar with older tama products :(

TANCO,
Your snare is a 5.5x14 4 ply maple shell w/reinforcement hoops.
lugs are CL55, strainer is SR015, snares are S022 and has diecast hoops..

All above provided by my guy in Taiwan..

Thanks,Carl

Hey, thanks a lot for the info Carl!
What do you think about trying the triple flanged superhoops on this drum?
I have a regular Remo coated ambassador on top and i still think it's a bit too dry.
Mabe the thinner hoops would sound better on a thin shell like this?

Stavis,
the snares on the Tama belong that way, that's how they came then.

Here's some trivia for you guys:

The Tama snare Tanco has was modeled after my old 7x14 Eames Master Model.

I was pretty friendly with a couple of guys a Tama back in the 80's and when I told them about this amazing snare I had they asked me if I would ship my drum to them in Pennsylvania fo them to evaluate.

I did and a while later this drum was part of their snare line-up.

It didn't last long.

That Tama snare looks more like a Artwood snare, but then again i could be wrong and it's just a Superstar with a super thick shell. I kinda thought it was an Artwood though because they were known for having thicker shells.

The Artwood line up consisted of numerous snares including a rosewood model and the drum that Tanco owns. If I remember Tama went with 15 plys of birch for this "Eames" type of drum.

I owned one briefly and it sounded very close to my Eames Master Model. Both drums were very loud but not what I'd call warm or rich in tone.

If you find one of the Tama rosewoods or the Tama solid maple shell snares with the Gladstone Style three-way lugs, buy it!
