Hello!

I have been thinking about buying a pearl Masterworks set
for a while now and I was hoping to get a similar set as
Vinnie paul has! The problem is like you all know is that
his set is an Extra Custom made so i can´t get the sizes
which he uses. 24x24, 14x14 , 15x15, 18x18 , 14x8....

but I´m trying to get as close as I can so I put together
a set and I was hoping that someone could help me
point out any errors or mistakes if any on this line up!

Any comment is well appreciated! Please help me out,
this is very important to me , to buy a great sounding
heavy metal set is not something I do everyday so I
want to get this right......

I didn´t want the 16" floor tom so it is not there

This is a MRX set.
Instead of the 14x14 tom I selected 14x12
Instead of the 15x15 tom I selected 15x14
Instead of the 18x18 floor tom I selected 18x16
Instead of the 24x24 Bass drums I selected 24x18
Instead of the 14x8 snare drum I selected 14x6.5
please let me know!:D

ps.
I was also wondering if you have any comments on
which pedals are better, Iron Cobra or Eliminator?
I´m trying to get the best of everything so feel free
to comment!

Pearl can make you an 8x14 snare in Masterworks according to Carl. I prefer the Eliminator to the Iron Cobras and my DW's. Your sizes are close. I think you might like the 24x18 better than a 24x24. Imagine the air you need to move in that drum. Very slow response too. Just my thoughts.

ELLIOMAN>>
I can get you all those sizes except the kick in Masterworks..FYI..Carl

ellioman
11-11-2002, 04:13 PM
OK, thanks carl,Great to hear!

but what should I do about the kick?
can you get the size in masters or...?

...tell me what would YOU do if you
were looking for the same "HEAVY" sound as I am?
Change the size on the kick? if so, how?

let me know because I´m quite excited about
this set!
:D

Jamie
11-12-2002, 03:23 PM
24x24 will be so slow to respond. get 24x18 or even 24x16. nicer response, i reckon. for a really deep noise, carl would know the best but i reckon 4ply mahogany inner+4ply birch outer, that would be pretty low i reckon.

Carl Peterson
11-13-2002, 08:22 AM
Go for a 16x26...10 ply.. 8 mahogany inner,2 ply birch outer..

You'll knock down trees..

16x26!?! you'll be clearin entire continents with that thing!

ellioman
11-15-2002, 10:37 AM
I´m thinking the 26x16 will be too high up for me!
So I think I will stick to the 24x18, hope that it will be
Boomy enought!

Jamie

ellioman, please post some pics of your kit if/when you get it, it sounds crazy!
also, does anybody have any good pics of vinnie paul's kit? if so please post em!
cheers

These are the best pictures I´ve been able to come up with,
I have the DVD with pantera and you can see the set
quite well in it....

That's a big kit. I'm amazed, though, at Abe Laboriel's 20x28 bass drum. Check out the current moderndrummer issue. it has 12 lugs per head!

ellioman
11-25-2002, 10:18 AM
Ok so my drum setup will be :

14x8 Snare
14x14 Tom
15x15 Tom
18x18 Tom
24x18 Kick

You kinda see where I´m taking this set, this
should be quite a Hard Rocking set but now the
question lies in what type, combination and
how many ply´s I should be having on the kit?

Like I say, I´ve never done this before so please help
me out.....
:)

JoshTheDrummer
11-25-2002, 04:00 PM
hey ellioman. it sounds like you got yourself a nifty little kit there. the only thing i want to say is why not add a couple smaller toms for some high notes. Maybe a 10x10 or 12x12 would be cool. just my opinion. peace

ellioman
11-25-2002, 06:45 PM
Hey josh!

I have a premier set with that 13" 14" 15" 16" and 18"
and I use the the 13" and 16" rarely compared to
the 14" , 15" and 18" so that´s why I´m just
planning to have those! :)

I´m quite satisfied with my selection but the only
problem I´m having is the ply selection....
I want a hard hitting kinda set...
so, I´m hoping that the users here would comment
on my question
;)

Drummer1
11-25-2002, 09:35 PM
If you are looking for a hard hitting kit, then the more plies the better. More plies =louder drums. I think you can get 10 or 12 ply in MW? Hope this helps.

ellioman
11-27-2002, 11:59 AM
Yeah, I´m thinking of having the bass drums 10 ply,
but what about the snare, toms and floor toms?
Is it wise to have it 10 ply also?

I´m looking for a heavy metal set similar to vinnie pauls
but I want a good sounding one...
so I´m not sure about how it would sound having all
the drums 10 ply, Any comments?

also what type of wood combination do you huys recommend?

GroverDrummer
12-03-2002, 09:19 PM
I'd get 8 ply toms. 10 ply bass and snare. This is only if you hit really hard. Consider that your intended 5-piece kit is similar in size also to Mike Bordin's. Mike is Ozzy's drummer and plays yamaha birch absolutes. Those are thin shelled drums. When you have such deep drums, you need tons of energy to get the full shell to really resonate enough to get both heads resonating, so you dont need to worry as much about choking the drum as with a thin-shelled but shallower drum. If I buying a Pearl 5-piece kit for metal, i'd get a 18x24 4-mahog plus 4-maple. I'd either get 14-16-18 toms or 12-15-18s; they'd either be the ply config of the bass (4+4) and shallow depths (i.e., 10-12-14), or else they'd be 2-mahog plus 4-maple in medium depths (i.e., 12-14-16). I'd get a deep snare with 8 or 10 plies. But that's just my 2 cents.

ellioman
12-04-2002, 12:47 PM
I think I´ve got my set ! :)
Tell me what you think!

2x = 24x18 Bass Drums 10 ply = 8 mahogany + 2 maple
1x = 14x14 Tom 6 ply = 4 mahogany + 2 Birch
1x = 15x15 Tom 6 ply = 4 mahogany + 2 Birch
1x = 18x18 Floor Tom 6 ply = 4 mahogany + 2 Birch
1x = 14x86 Snare 10 ply = 10 maple

Quite a powerful set right?
Anything wrong??

Don´t be quiet , Tell me! :D

depill
12-04-2002, 01:30 PM
14 x86 snare???? isn't that a little deep :D

This setup looks fine to me. What color are you getting??

Jamie
12-08-2002, 12:28 PM
hes gotta get it in black really, since its a full-on metal kit \m/. but since its masterworks, get an amazing colour ellioman!
jamie

Rekan
12-08-2002, 12:42 PM
Ok. first of all don't expect it to sound lika pantera. What you hear on panteras records and live shows is NOT the masters kit. Vinnie uses trigging on every single little drum. think the snare is real in the studio though. The bass and toms don't sound like drums. More like pieces of meat thrown on a marble floor.

But i think you have a great kit going there. I would like to recommend having the ply with the bearing edge in birch and the rest in maple. Sounds amazing. But you do what you want.

ellioman
12-09-2002, 12:17 PM
I´m thinking about having this effect on the set...
I may change the color but I like the look of it! :D

But I´m still searching ...........

12-09-2002, 12:52 PM
Nice effect, cool color, can you post another picture but with blue, purple or even green color?

Carl Peterson
12-09-2002, 01:50 PM
How bout this????????

ellioman
12-09-2002, 03:14 PM
Wow That´s Awesome! But I´m kinda disapointed that
You´ve already made one :)

I´m thinking about having the set either black with this
effect or gray ( silver maybe ) ....

But this is the direction I´m going in terms of effect ....
If you have any more ideas Carl then don´t hesitate
to comment! :D

One thing that has been bugging me is , as you can see on the pic that Carl attached, the black hardware on the drum!
I´m buying alot of boom stands, hihat stand, closed hithat, snare stand.....
and let´s say I need to buy another (Replace if you will)
for some reason....
isn´t that a huge problem? Ordering the black hardware?

I, in most cases, like the black color better then the chrome one!

Sweeeeeeet, ellioman! you've got to let us know how it sounds. what did you finally decide for the finish?
If one wants, they can do each drum in a different finish, correct?

ellioman
01-08-2003, 09:00 AM
This is the finish I selected on the drums!
I think it will look pretty cool!
I slightly altered the pic i put on this thread earlier,
made the white a little bit more white, like you
can see on the pic below! I think it looks alot better
like this! don´t you all agree?

Did you go for the black hardware?? Can't wait to see the kit!

ellioman
01-10-2003, 10:43 AM
Yes I ordered the black Hardware, I think it looks much better
like that!! but I ordered a CH-100 closed hi-hat stand and
they don´t make that in black so that will be the only part
no in black! :(

and I couldn´t get the effect I wanted but I´m looking to see
if they can make the other effects available
with a Silver/gray color!
I´m thinking now about having the set Silver/gray!
The effects available are in different colors and I´m hoping that
they can put it in gray for me... Let´s keep our fingers crossed! :D
I´m thinking about the Gold Marbelized in Silver/gray!
you can see the effects:
http://www.pearldrum.com/mwfinish.asp

I´ll let you guys know how everything works out!

ellioman
01-13-2003, 07:09 AM
Ok it´s done! I went for the finish that carl put on this
thread (Silver Marbelized ?) with black hardware!

So now it´s just the waiting game to be played :D

CARL! Could you put more pics of that drum on this
thread for me? Because the light on the pic makes
it very hard to see the effect on the drum!

Othon
01-19-2003, 05:49 PM
Hey this drum looks like the Vinnie Paul set, the Pantera's drummer.

ellioman
01-19-2003, 06:25 PM
That was the point from the start! Not to get an extact
set but quite similar to his!

I have a set which sizes are 10", 12", 13", 14", 16" and two 22".
I always like to remove the 10" and 14" from the set
and keep it as a 5 piece set, then i saw that vinnie´s set
is quite similar excet the sizes are a little bigger and
I´m into heavy metal like him so i went on and ordered a set
similar to his, not the same but in his direction...

You can see my set here before i took out the 10" and 14"

LOL! How true!

So many dudes are going crazy trying to get "that sound."

As it turns out, "that sound" isn't really a product of the drums but the sound gear!

That earthquake bottom you feel and hear at arena shows is almost all PA. Bass drums tuned that low would sound muddy if you played 16ths.

I know definition is needed for 16ths and 32nds to work on double bass drum licks....... Most bass drums sound pretty crappy tuned like like that.

PS>

take into consideration about drum triggers, like said before. From what i hear, you could get a sound like Vinnies from an 8", 10" and 14" tom setup....and those are drums that are just a little more, "reachable" might i say. BE ORIGINAL MAN!!!!!!!!!
and again Good Luck

I changed my drum set into a very similar setup as I getting
now before I even heard about Vinnie, Then later a friend
of mine played for me a song with ´em and I really liked them and I was so happy that he had been using the same setup
as I had been doing (Although he had bigger sizes)

This is why I can relate to him so much! I´m not trying
to copy him although it may seem like it to you!
Later I will add on different drums, been thinking about
quartertoms, 16"x16" tom and so on ...

and btw. the sound from my kit will be so much different
from his since his set is 6 ply Maple and mine will be
toms 8 ply (6 mahogany + 2 Birch) Kick 10 ply (8 mahog+2 birch).

but the whole point is, I am doing my thing, I´ve always
liked the bigger toms and big kicks and my setup has always
been like vinnies so I´m just following what I´ve been wanting
to do for so long! although I had almost given up drumming
then my friend bought a masters kit and I regained my
interest in drumming (Thank god) :D

Sorry for the rambling dude!
and thanks for the best wishes!

Why would you get 2 of the same cymbals?

GroverDrummer

Lots of drummers use multiple cymbals of the same model. Paistes are the most uniform, I think, and aren't good for using doubles. But Zildjians and Sabians, and especially the Turkish brands (Istanbuls and Bosphorus and Turkish brand) all sound different, even when they have the same model name. When you want only slight variation and good blend, doubling cymbal models works.

Yeah it probably comes off like I´m a total Fanatic of Vinnie
but I´m not... I love his work and He is though my biggest
inspiration to date along with Danny carey and silveria...

I had tried the AA´s in a store here in iceland and I liked
them alot so I wanted ´em but I took a chance with the
hand hammered cymbals, and I´m very happy with ´em!!
It´s just the drum setup is totallt like what I have been using
and I took a chance with the cymbals, although just a week
after I got the cymbals I was told that the store had gotten
AA-MetalX which I probably would have bought if I had
seen them before but ohh well...

what I bought is the best cymbals I´ve tried yet so I´m
not regretting my purchase....

I didn´t mention this because I know you guys can be a
bit cruel about stuff like this and I didn´t want to get flamed
about it...

but the truth is out though! :D

And the big month is here! If all goes well then the set
will arrive in may so my belly is going crazy out of excitement!

and guys do me a favour, do go telling me about my set
will not sound the same as vinnie... I know that but
it will be my type of metal set
I mean 8ply mahog+2ply birch kicks and
6ply mahog+2ply birch toms will be a killer ... :D

You really dig the 12x7's... what is their appeal, in your opinion?

The finish will fade from a light shade of Plat Mist to standard #151. This is accomplished by the density of micro sparkles. The show car effect is by having 2 or 3 extra clear coats to get that deep "show car" look.

12x7s have a really distictive pop. The diameter gives a higher pitch with the depth giving the sound some tone. The note isn't as short as a pic snare.

A vented 12x7 is dryer and louder.

opus138

Seems like the depth would need a harder hit for more pop. Bet it suits jazz and such really nice.

It's more versatile than I'd have thought before I got one.

Rimshots at a high tuning will kill small animals at close ranges

Tuned medium gives it a bit more tone.

Cross stick isn't as good as a larger diameter drum. I use a Yami Russ Miller wedge to get that sound.

opus138
05-02-2003, 02:46 PM
Yeah - I've seen pics of the wedge... heck of an idea.

I'd love to hear one sometime. Seem to have a bit of a cult following in that people play them and fall in love with them.

12x7's or wedges?

opus138

Sorry - wasn't real clear there. I was referring to the 12x7 snare size

Smoke N Drums
05-02-2003, 03:05 PM
I have heard some 12x7s that sounded "thin" to me.

I got one because it was a real deal. My band immediately liked it and every time I play it they notice. (I alternate a 12x7 with a 13x6.5 Craviatto)

I've played it one time subbing in with a LOUD rock band. I cranked it up played with Vic SD1;s and layed into it. I turned some heads that night.

a 12x7 will not give you that super huge "stadium sound"
I have a 14x6.5 MRX for that! Hehe

I'm guessing your DW edge is going to have some serious crack to it. Please post a review when you get it!

I love my piccolo (13x3.25) but have come to the realization it make sense in only a few settings. I need a "fatter" snare for heavier applications. I got my MW to be a bit more versatile, but want to get a 14x6.5 next - just don't know what drum yet!

Smoke N Drums
05-02-2003, 03:27 PM
I'm getting both the Edge and MW to match kits I already have.
Since I'll end up with a number of snares, I want them to all sound different.

If I didn't play in such variety of venues or music styles, I'd be ok with one snare.

I've got to tell you that having a day job makes a big difference on being able to actually get good stuff.

That being said, top of the line stuff is made well, good looking, durable, and most importantly sounds great. It's a good investment to wait until you can get an instrument of that quality.

It's really ironic that I have to have a day job to really do music.

I personally know a drummer who's photo is in a major manufacturer's catalog has a day job too.

Q: How do you get a drummer off your porch?

I look forward to gigging again at some point. I think I might be hooking up with one of my buddy's (we used to play together in two different bands - I was drumming in one and singing and playing bass in another) bands, a metal outfit. I think it'd be a blast.
