Thanks Oliver for taking-on my suggestion. In case there are drummers on the forum not aware of Jeff and his contributions to drumming, here's a great introduction :

Oliver, it's up to us to keep this thread going it seems. :(

On a brighter note, here's one of the best recordings I've heard of Jeff. The audio quality on this CD is beyond compare. You'll have to find a used copy but it's well worth it.

James Newton Howard & Friends (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000009EW/qid=1036146995/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-4436818-3048958?v=glance&n=507846)

Greets to lovely Telgte. Far away, isnt it?

The pic below was taken during the recording of "Kingdom Of Desire" probably around 1991, shows Jeff with a Pearl MLX Kit.

Uh no.... Pearl MLX didn't have badges like that and they never had diecast hoops. MLX drums also had the long, one-piece lugs on the shells as shown in some of the pictures up higher in this thread.

How much do you want to bet that those are actually Gretsch drums in this picture?

uhhm you seem to be right, the badge looks different. on the first look, it appeared as a Pearl Kit. sorry for that.

Iīve heard that Jeff also liked Gretsch drums, but i didnīt thought he officially played them withouth being endorsed. he was a first class pearl endorser though.

I think so, too. But you have to rember nobody with my age listens to TOTO records. Most people in the same age hear Hi-Hop or some Pop with now live-played instruments, don't they?

But I want to show some new pics I found at

Jeff Porcaro (http://www.povlab.org/jeff.porcaro/jporcaro.php) .

I hope that more user will post some good pictures here because the world's greatest drummer needs the world's greates forum, I think.
But we shouldn't forget the person who is nearly as good as Jeff. Simon Phillips. A big thank to him for playing the grooves nearly as great as Jeff!!!!;)

Here is the picture I want to show:

Great thread! Jeff is definitely a
personal favorite of mine and is
usually a topic of conversation
between drummers here at
Pearl.
I'm including a pic of a souvenir
drumhead that hangs in my office
from the JP tribute show and a
JP Pearl ad.
Also, (drumroll please) I'll be
posting never before seen
pictures of some JP Pearl promo
shots. Stay tuned.......!

Derek,

thanks for the pictures!!!! Hopefully you have some more in your archives, would be so great! Wow, i like this drumhead, but i think thereīs no way to get a copy? hahaha!

Besides, iīve heard that Pearl has made some Jeff Porcaro posters years ago, are there still any of them available?

Me and many others here in the forum have always requested a special Jeff Tribute Page here in the forum, would be so nice if you can handle it! :-)) Just a big thread area where everybody here can share his memories and thoughts about Jeff and his music with others, where Pearl Officials can post previously unheard information, pics and stories about Jeff. How about that?

For the greatest drummer on earth itīs a shame that the worlds greatest drum company hasnīt got a forum. ;) Let us not forget him.

Cheers to all of you,

Oliver :))

Jeff was the drummer for Toto, but he was also at one time one of the most sought after studio drummers in the biz. The following link might just give you an idea of the people he worked with.

Hey JMaxey, Aviation Mech huh, who do you work for? I'm with a Co. that sells, supports a particular Corp jet aircraft.

I don't know that Jeff's birthday is on April 1st. But here you can learn much about the greatest drummer in the whole world. If he would be alive now, he would be a living legend, would'nt he?
As a bithday greeting I will post another picture.;)

Accident?

There have been a few explanations for his death, The following is an excerpt from All Music Guide.

"Initial reports suggested that the cause of death was cardiac arrest brought on by his having developed an allergic reaction to pesticides as he sprayed his garden. But a coroner's report, issued a month after his death, found no traces of pesticides; instead, the coroner found traces of cocaine in Porcaro's bloodstream and concluded that he had died of a heart attack brought on by hardening of the arteries caused by prolonged use of cocaine."

The later is still being disputed by many close to Jeff!

Hi Big King!

There are some suppositions about his death. Some say that he died because of taking too much alcohol or drugs. But Mike Porcaro says that he worked with a insect poison in the garden and he had a allergy of the poison. and then he died because of the heart attack. :(

I'm not very sure if these facts are correct. If they aren't I hope that they will be correct!! ;)

Cheers Freddy

Hi Big King,

Jeff passed away on August, 5th 1992 in late afternoon. He finished recording the "Kingdom Of Desire"-Album (which among his fans is called to be one of the best records he did, so hear it!) with Toto just a few weeks shy and the new World Tour was booked and payed, so he decided to have a few weeks off prior to the tour which was scheduled of autumn.

He was doing garden work, bought a pesticide for insects and suddenly felt bad after using it. The allergic shock he suffered triggered a serious heart attack. He was rushed into the hospital minutes later, was reanimated but died shortly after his arrival.

To those of you who wants to say "hello" to Jeff:
He was buried on August 10th on Forrest Lawn Memorial Cementery, Hollywood Hills, Lincoln Terrace, Lot 109.

He surely will never be forgotten.

Hi drmsdad,

i have some additions to your post in medical point of view:

An autopsy of Jeff Porcaro revealed a serious heart condition that had been previously undiagnosed. A report issued by the office of the Los Angeles County Coroner a month later also mentioned that a minute trace of cocaine was found in his body.

Although traces of cocaine can remain in a body for years, the media latched on to the drug reference and widely reported that cocaine abuse was the cause of death.

Unfortunately this rumor persists, in spite of repeated statements by those who knew him well that he had not used the drug for many years.

Hopefully, this helps.

Oliver :-)

What a crummy way to go. Gardening? Makes you think. It's like my friend Don who drowned last year. He was a certified scuba diver and oceanologist, and yet drowned in a minor boating accident.

Damn it sucks.

Since we are talking about "death" does anyone have any info on the death of Morphine's Bassist/Singer "Mark Sandman?" I know he died of a Heart attack, but did it really happen on stage as he told a joke about a heart attack??
