OCDP is overpriced junk if you ask me.
GMSDrummer
07-07-2002, 08:41 PM
OCDP is definatly overpriced on the snare drums a few $100, for sure. Drum Sets too. But you could NEVER tell me that they can't do some cool stuff. If ya got the pocket....why not?! Honestly, their stuff , though expensive, is, at times, REALLY COOL!! Agree on that?

Here's a Craviotto snare that I found on the web. Don't Know if Pyro will accept it though. It's not Ludwig, Tama OR Peal!Wadaya say?

I really like that OCDP snare with the tubelugs and a Craviotto would be nice to own:cool:
How much do the OCDP snares go for BTW?
GMSDrummer

not sure what you mean by BTW. write back to me on that, You can checkout their pricelist at their website, www.ocdrum.com. Remember this before you have your heart attack looking at the prices: ALL prices are LIST, you will pay 20% less than what is shown.......Here's my OCDP Snare......

GMSdrummer, I said i liked pearl tama and ludwig. i NEVER said that i hated all other companies, that would be pretty stupid. Was it something i said ?..................
Man....some of those drums look hot! (I love pearls, but those drums just look cool). I wonder how they sound?
I've been trying to convince myself I need a good snare drum. I just don't think that I play enough to justify replacing a steel (or whatever metal) export snare drum with an expensive one.
Just my thoughts.....rambling.......on......
errrr.. sorry! you guys didn't need all that bs did you?

My friend wants an OCDP that's something like below. 20plys, four 2" vents, and dual throw offs. It looks good but according to their LIST PRICES it would cost about $985.00 and I just don't see paying that much or around that much for a snare. Depends I guess. He should have it by Christmas, but I'd wanna hear it before I spent all that money. Don't ya think?
They all look really cool though!:)
http://www.ocdrum.com./images/purplegbirdseye_large.jpg
That's kinda my thinking too. I can understand laying down almost a grand for a snare if you are playing like three times a week, or at least once. I never play live anymore, so I don't see why I should buy a new drum. Go figure.

dont hate on OC, they are very good drums, and they have sothing that kicks ever single drum company's butt its called the vented snare, and oh yeh if the other drum companies are soo good why couldnt they think of the vented snare drum instead of 2 guys inventing it....ask yourself that question
Pyrotechnic
07-09-2002, 12:55 PM
Actually, ludwig made the first vented snare drum, the coloseum. OCDP made a variation with holes, so they could steal the idea since theres no doubt in my mind that ludwig patented that design. Heres a pic of the ludwig coloseum.

That is one of those tama cast bronze snares. They are mighty expensive, but they are supposed to be real loud and cutting.

Anyone here no what DW means when they say that their craviotto snares are "Solid Maple"?
Also, I here that the DW Edge snares are heavier than a tank. Can anyone here attest to that or tell me exactly how much they weigh? Thanks guys.

What they are trying to say the shell is a solid piece of maple, not a shell made of plys of maple.

I dont know much on the history of the colosseum snare, but i do know they are HARD to find, and if you do find one, prepare to PAY for it. If you really want one, contact ludwig and see if they still make it, i think i saw something in a catalog about one, not sure though. Kinda weird how OCDP claims they invented the vented snare when they just made a variation of ludwig's design...................

If anyone here is planning to buy an Orange County snare, you should keep in mind that they charge by hardware, finish, and SHELL DIAMETER!!! So I would consider it a bit of a waste to buy a snare drum that was 3" X 14" because for the same price (and same finish, hardware, ect....) you could be getting a 8"X 14" snare at the EXACT same cost. Just thought i'd warn ya 'bout that.

07-10-2002, 11:15 AM
If i remember correctly, i saw something in a earlier ludwig catalog, around 1999 that had something about a slotted colosseum snare. I'm under the impression they still make it. I heard that these snares were LOUD though.

Hey GMSDrummer, those Edge snare drums are very heavy. I'm not good with guesstimating lbs. so I'm not sure of it's exact weight. My local dealer had a 5" x 14" one and I played on it, examined it, what have you. And ya wonder why DW makes snare stands that could hold a tank. I'd say if you were gonna get one of DW's snares, you should get one of their snare stands for it, also. Despite it's weight, it sounds incredible. Such a nice crack but yet with the right amount of warmth. I love the idea of combing wood and metal in a snare drum. If I got one I'd get a 5" x 13" Brass and Birch w/ Brass Hardware and rims...aaaah...sweet dreams.

i have it tuned right up at the moment, its sounds like a much shallower drum untill the ring, when you can definatly hear the depth and material - it sounds like a brass or something, but without that cutting 'twang' that some players love, its really hard to xplane! i'll try make a recording and post it on here!
yeah, i was a bit aprehensive about the snare once i'd ordered it (6 months waiting time on most drums btw!!) seeming as it cost nearly £750 in total, but the amount of coolness it brings to my set up, its worth it..! GMS, you should check out the options you can get on normal custom drums... you wanna see mine??
cheers all

The attack with the solid shell is SHAMMMMMMMMMMMACK..Very hot,slamin..Ply shells have more of a character to them..The attack is not as brilliant..Its a more "combined" sound..the plys give it definition,personality..Make sense?

Hi again Carl, Just for my personnal knoledge,
Is the 50th annv supposed to replicate the sound of yesterdays vintage hooks/claws snare drum.
Since I've never played any vintage snare drum, I can only compare the sound to newer drums and the difference I've noticed is that the 50th annv has a really deep snare bed and that it seems to choke the sound a bit. Or maybe it's due to the fiberskyn head or maybe something else?...
Also, Is it possible to put Die cast hoops on this baby just for the heck of trying something more focused?
Thanks

next year you should come to illinois they have a vintage drum show ever year. it's usally in may. and they have great deals. they sell alot of vintage stuff and some new stuff as well. i have a dw 7000 double bass pedal and i wanted to get the dw 5000 delta 2 double bass pedal and at drum pad (a drum store in illinois) they wanted that dw 5000 delta 2 pedal for $369 or $379 one of those, but any ways they had the dw 5000 delta 2 double bass pedal at the vintage drum show and they only wanted $300 for it and he threw in a pedal bag so i could put my pedal in it( if i brought the pedal at drum pad they were throwing in free pedal bags it's called dw deluxe pedal bag) and then they gave me a free hat a free shrit and a free american dreams 3 movie. (i think that's whats it called) all for $300 and if i brought it at drum pad i would be paying $70 or $80 more and only a dw deluxe pedal bag i would get free. well any ways i just saying that you could probably find that snare here.

I used to have a 14x8 free floating maple snare that I used for concert percussion. I sold that drum, but now I wish I had kept it because Pearl doesn't make anything beyond 6.5x14 anymore, so it's probably a collectors item.
That drum was awesome, I had a coated emperor on it and tuned it real low, so it sounded like an old rope drum. The snare sound was unbelievably responsive for a drum that deep.
I'm sure someone else is enjoying it now. <sigh>
gcdrummer
07-23-2002, 01:36 PM
I probably would have purchased a free floater 8x14 if Pearl still made one.
Tabla_Man
07-23-2002, 02:45 PM
That was a great drum, it was really versitile. Like I say, I mostly used it for concert percussion, but that drum would sound great for rock, or jazz. I did some recording with it once and the engineer left the board pretty much flat, and it sounded great.
Pyrotechnic
07-23-2002, 04:05 PM
Well, you could get a normal free floater, and buy a 8x14 maple shell from any custom drum builder, then put the shell in a 6.5x14 free floater, and use longer tension rods.
EDIT: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=895251086 you guys that want a 8x14 should check that out.

E-bay sometimes has interesting snares.
Carl Peterson
08-21-2002, 08:56 AM
On FF drums, the lower part of the lug,(snare side), has to be seated into the ring chassis. Therefore, you must also find the longer lugs..part # FT80.If you use longer tension rods just on the top hoop, and still use the FT65,(6.5 lug),your tension will not be evenly distributed on the lug, which can cause stress problems on the lug pulling it upward and possibly cracking the chassis..

Pearl Sensitone 14 x 6.5?? could i be right? copper?
GMSDrummer
08-23-2002, 10:05 PM
id say copper, DED?
The drums are:
6.5 x 14 Dunnett-Bronze Acid bath finish
6.5 x 14 Ludwig hammered bronze circa 1985
6.5 x 14 Pearl Brass ffs
6.5 x 14 Pearl Sensitone Classic Bronze (x2) (I don't know why they look copper in the photo but they're not)
7 x 12 Pearl Maple.
As you can see I really like bronze shells. Part of the reason I don't have any wood drums (the 7 x 12 dosen't count) is that I get a lot of warmth out of the bronze and still have the cut of a metal drum.
But. . .I'm always on the lookout for a good wood snare so who knows?
DizzyGrl17

To: DizzyGrl17
I have two of the Sensitones because I really like them and I wanted a back up.
Plus, when I found out Pearl had discontinued this particular drum, I snatched one up off of E-Bay at a great price.
And if I find another one at the right price at the right time, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

how did you guys get all those pics of the ocdp snares on the first page. they look really nice. check out www.sjcdrums.com.
they are a custom drum maker near me. they are basically like ocdp except you can get 4, 5, 6, 8, or 10 plys for your toms instead of just 6, 8, and 10 plys for ocdp. they also make any color drum or hardware and you can pick which kind of lugs and hardware you want(i think theres 20 different lugs.) Plus you can get vented snaresa in up to 20 ply. this is truly custom and the drums look really nice. they are cheap too. I got a price quote for $2,000 for 10", 12", 14", 16", 22" PLUS a 20 ply vented snare. I know 2 people that ordered them so I will post how they sound once i get to hear them if anyone is interested.

the drums that you see are all drums that i found doing a net search of OCDP pictures. thats all.
gotta check those drums out tho, thanks bro!
Some of you people have way too much money!
How many snares do you need?! :)
Drumboo: I dig the look of the Tico Torres drum - how
does it sound? Sadly I can't see myself getting one
anytime soon as it would cost almost as much as the
whole Export kit I'm planning to buy!
How you have that and those other drums too.....

dude, for the money, get something besides the Tico. honestly, i took it to the guys at Guitar Center, and they tuned to where it would sound best. they liked it.but when i asked them if thats how its SUPPOSED to sound, and they said yes, i knew that it was going back. it didnt crack. it fizzled.
all in all, id much rather get the eric singer for the money. the tico sucks.
The Eric Singer is a GREAT snare!

These bad boys are turned out of Ironwood logs. Solid shell, almost twice the density of maple, harder than Jarrah. Nickel Drumworks Piston style strainer. All Aussie made, Steve Ferrone uses one, maybe not now hes got one with his name on it.

I like the logo burned into the shell. Them drums got plenty of spirit.:) Seriously reconsidering the masters MMX kit now. Wait till G.M.S sees em. Very classy, very Australian:D
I have it from Marshall's Review: "...the 5 piece that I have, lists for US$5,500 (GBP 3,600ish ) including a snare of your choice..."

I like the idea that the guy making the drums actually goes and chooses the trees to be felled. But at those prices and only 10kits ayear how do they make any money? Must sell alot of snares.
Yeah, and i'm almost "afraid to play" on a living-spirit of Irobwood, ....stealing a piece of Great Australian/Aborigini Culture.
Have you read this:
...Ironwood is photo sensitive and over time the timber darkens to a deep rich red colour with beautiful swirls in the grain on some pieces. Used as bush medicine by the Aboriginal people, Ironwood bark was used in infusions to treat spear wounds and its leaves boiled to treat headaches.

The drum sniffers will love changing heads on them, they will probably live longer too:D But if there is no glue the sniffers might go cold turkey HAHA HA :(
I,m trying to imagine how the snare sounds. I think lotsa focus and projection, maybe very dry. Certainly got to crack better then one of them Orange County " x ply" snares.
As if you would use ply wood ever again Hehe;)
I haven't seen any dealers around here carrying them. Might have to try and visit the factory. They have me intrigued.
Compared to Orange county snare prices out here, I reckon I might have to buy at least one spirit drum snare, maybe a 13"x6.5", something that pops as it cracks, if you know what I mean.

Speaking of snare thread here is spirit 13"x6.5" 10 lug.
Id like to see grain on aged one.
Yeah that grass can get to a point were you might as well be belting up smack, your'e not going to get out of that lounge/sofa. You can't devote enough time to practice because what little time you spend off the lounge is taken up scoring or cleaning the bong.
Or working to pay for the score. Then you start smoking at work, I used to have a bong at work and smoke a couple of times a day:eek: Not good. Now I'll have a joint socially but thats about it.
Is that a 13"x4" snare that animal has got, Jim Henson being english I'd say Animal plays Premier or being the rock dog that he is maybe Ludwig.:D Double kick too!

I presently own two OCDP snares and alot of other companies snares including a Tama PL-565 Bell brass (Same as the Lars snare wihout the fancy finish, name plate and zinc hoops). I can tell you this, NOBODY is making snares as loud as OCDP. My primary snare is 7x12 30 ply maple ported and it cuts through everything. Even betterthen the 565. It can be overkill for some types of music, especially jazz. I know of two Pearl endorsed drummers who will be playing OCDP snares in the next three months. If you have'nt had the chance, try one of them before you knock them.
Most of the people who are calling them overpriced are the ignorant people who go to OCDP's site and look at the retail prices and think thats what you pay. Who pays retail?. You pay 20% or LESS then those prices shown on the site. And if you dont get a Laquer finish and powder coating they are priced in the same range as some of the high end Pearl and Tama snares. The snares that cost $1,000 from them have custom laquer and powder coating. And with that you get a unique snare built to your specifications. You are paying them to custom make something. Its not as expensive as you think.

I had to order mine from away, and got it 5 months later, but it was DEF worth it.

assuming that you're talking about my drum, that's a workshop series brass nickel plated 5x14 shell. i just slapped on a new remo emperor today.
here's another picture:

it looks slightly less badass here.
psx00: i had put this on layaway last august and didn't have it fully paid off for about 3 months. i hear you. BTW, what is written around the vent hole on yours?

I can't say right now, as it's not currently with me. I left it with Pete (Stanbridge, of Stanbridge Drums [www.stanbridgedrums.com]) to get the piano black wood hoops buffed/polished. I'll let you know when I get it back. As well, my Pearl 14x5 Free Floater is there as well. Pete is re-finishing the natural maple shell for me. I've yet to decide on a color. Any thoughts?
Right now, I'm playing a 14x6.5 Ocheltree/Dunnett/DW/Ayotte/Keplinger Hybrid I got from Ronn Dunnett off of eBay. One sick (and heavy) snare.
I'll let you know what it says around the vent hole when i get it back.

the oval badge that reads "drum workshop" means it is a workshop series drum, their less expensive line. the round "DW" badges are on the collector's series, and i believe edge snares as well. the craviottos are a different badge altogether.

Haha I don't know where to start pointing out the B.S. in that statement. First off, Ludwig made the Colloseum(sp) snare, which has a large slot, Premier made the Deep rock 9 or something along those lines, and there were several vintage drums that had those larger than average vents, and OCDP hasn't patented any vented snare either. Every company puts vents in drums, just varying sizes.

deleyed post, i know
but i betcha that pearl only patented useing the aluminium shells with the roto toms, and all the vari-pitch toms were concert
and besides, aslong as you don't sell the drums, who cares if you make one?
