View Full Version : New Finishes for the Export Selects?

This thread is an "offshoot" of the thread started by JonathanAKAgod. That thread got very long, and a little scattered, so I decided to start this thread in an attempt to focus in on a few finishes which many of us seem to want.
I do this in the hope that if we can decide on a couple of new finishes, and show that they have support/interest, Pearl might truly consider introducing them in the Export Select line.
Input on these proposed finishes is more than welcome, in fact, it is needed if they are to have any chance of becoming "reality". However, this thread is really only about finishes for the EXPORT SELECT line. (Perhaps we should start a similar thread for covered finishes for the Exports.)
:) - Sean
The following are the "agreed-upon" finishes from the other thread.
1) "Natural Laquer":

2) "Dusk Fade":

3) "Blue Sparkle" (Laquer):

and,
4) "Emerald (or Green) Mist"... which isn't exactly new. So it would be more of a re-introduction.

So, thoughts, comments? Do you like any one in particular? If one of these finishes were offered, would you get it?
BTW- Here is JonathanAKAgod's original thread (All 12 pages!):
"What finish do you want to see in the Export Select line?". (http://66.40.220.17/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1467) In case you haven't already seen it, and were wondering how we came up with these four finishes.

Drum 313,
First of all why not make a poll of it ??
I like the "fade" colours if these would offer these i would realy go for that. My favourite fade is vintage sunburst (# 128) as offered in the masters line and that would be my first choice. But if i would have to choose from the colours above:
1 Dusk fade
2 Natural Laquer
3 Emerald (or Green) Mist
4 Blue Sparkle

the dusk fade is a beauty. Infact, if i was buying more expensive drums, I'd like it to be an option. Nice job mocking them up!
a blue sparkle would also be hot, but i get the feeling pearl are keen to keep sparkle finishes exclusive to their higher end drums.
in reality, i think the natural lacquer would be the most likely addition to the line, but i can always keep my fingers crossed for that dusk fade!

The dusk fade is really awesome, I would have choosen that color instead of the blue mist I bought, also a yellow fade to a ruby would be killer as well.
Colors are like drum configurations, there are millions to choose from....
Hey, Gene, whisper the dusk is hot in the new products people's ear....

No offense, but there's probably a reason that they discontinued the green mist in ELX. The emerald fade is nice, though. The natural color of poplar isn't that appealing, so I wouldn't look forward to seeing that anytime soon. Besides, with a natural finish, they have to be really picky about the outer ply's cosmetics. Is there such thing as"A" quality Poplar outer plies? They would probably have to use one or two outer plies of some other wood so it would look decent.
Gene said it best:
"The maple that we use in the SRX is exactly the same as what's used in Masters however cosmetically it is different. The maple used on Masters is chosen for its cosmetic consistency ("A" quality color and grain) which is a must for natural finishes. The maple used on the SRX is not quite up to these cosmetics standards ("B" quality color and grain) which is OK for tinted finishes but is not really ideal for a natural finish."

I know he's referring to SRX there, but the same would apply.

Introducing high-end finishes could be a bad thing though, top-of-the-line finishes on Exports mean that prices will go up. And when that happens, the Session prices will go up, and so will the Masters. :o

Yeah i wanted the emerald mist when i got my kit but it had been discontinued :( but i like my blue mist. I like the idea of the green fade that be nice. I'd like to see a darker orange almost red mist. or a teal sorta greeny blue mist

yes true but an emerald or green mist aren't really that top of the line finishes. mapex does transparent emerald green on their M series drums and the finish is bad *** but it's not that expensive because of how they do it i guess.
I love that dusk fade; if I didn't already have the Cobalt I'd be beggin' right now....
Pearl have started to introduce fades into the ELX line now, so why not another?!

I'd love to see a white laquer. I don't know what it is about white drums, but I love them... Perhaps because of that classic look the white gives them. I also think a pink colour would work well. Maybe in a fade, like the ruby fade, but with pink instead of red. Still lovin' that Cobalt Mist, though, and can't wait for mine.

The export comes in a white wrap my dad was trying to talk me into getting that but the blue mist in the elx was sitting beside it and looked extra yummy. If i knew the cobalt was purple and not blue i would have got that but too late i still luv mine anyways.
Id luv to see a pink kit too. i'd luv to own a pale pink kit with black hardware or a hot pink sparke ooh pretty. but yeah us female drummers are out numbered and i dont know many guys who would be keen on a pink kit so they prpbably wont make it as a standard colour.
haha everyone knows me as a pink hater its jus the fact that not many people have pink kits and that its an uncomon colour for em that makes me want one

i will give my honest opinion, truthfully i think none of the finishes should be added, dont get me wrong they're all great finishes, i especially love the blue sparkle, but think of it this way, would it be fair to those who bought high end kits for a really nice finish (and sound quality), to see their beautiful finish on a lower end kit, any sparkle really i think should only be a custom color, (silver sparkle, black sparkle) are an exception cuz they're common but should still only be on high end kits like a masters custom, other sparkles like green, blue, orange, champagne, and gold sparkle, should only be custom colors, like on a masterworks, or ocdp or ayotte or any other custom company. basically wat im sayin is these finishes are common on high end kits, and they cost a lot, thru wat i have read in other posts, a lot of the kits' high price comes from its finish, now two things r wrong with adding these finishes 1. the price for the export select would go up, 2. it really wouldnt be fair for those who own a high end kit to see their finish on a low end kit. the finish for the export select are wat they r for a reason, u should consult pearl, if u want a fantastic finish like the one ur askin for u should really then be willin to pay the cash, beautiful finish should = beautiful sounding drums, ok finish should = ok sounding drums, not beautiful finish = ok sounding drums, this is just my opinion, i definitely think these high end finishes should be kept on high end drums, ok
PEACE
miss you love

2) Dusk fade man, It's beautiful. I would definately buy that
I just wish the export and export select line of drums come out with the 8"x7" & 10"x8" mounted toms. I would love to have those on my export kit!!! Would they have them if you custom order them?

Definitly White!
Just to give another idea of what the dusk fade could look like, check this thread (http://66.40.220.17/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19206) - the (cough cough) Yamaha finishes are starting to look pretty nice....
Pearl should bring back the Ebony Mist!!!!!!

Hmmmm... I dunno if I agree with this one. Why can't an inexpensive kit look good? Exports just have a wrap finish, it's plastic, so making ANY color or finish shouldn't be that hard/costly. I can see how Pearl might want to have the cooler finishes on the higher priced kits in an effort to sell more of them (This IS still a BUSINESS! LOL ) but I don't agree with the "beautiful finish should = beautiful sounding drums, ok finish should = ok sounding drums, not beautiful finish = ok sounding drums" idea. I think my Export kit sounds great and looks great (silver flash, old school baby!).
What I'm trying to say is that it sounds like you're saying that if you have an Export kit you don't deserve to have a good looking kit, or something like that. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you...

jmann - we're talking particularly about the Export Select (ELX) which has a laquer finish rather than the wrap of the basic Export - Pearl have already introduced some nice transparent laquers and recently some fades but we're always after more/better!
