..man, this is interesting.
anyone watch the Pearl video and notice how he 'made fun of' DW, in one of the recent Drum! magazines, there is a studio report from the Chili peppers...apparently he used a whole dw kit for part of the sessions...just thought it would be fun to share.
i apologize to those who will feel this post is useless.

I've heard that DW hardware is cheap rubbish made in Taiwan or something!!!!!, A guy told me that it all flakes off. I have to say they look pretty nice though. I went to see Satriani a few months back and his drummer (Jeff Campitelli) played on a dw and it looked cool.

TLD-sorry you find the post useless...it was just somewhat amusing to me considering he constantly makes fun of DW, not only on video, but i saw him in clinic, and he poked fun a few times. i dont care, it was just funny :)
man...just because something is made in taiwan, doesnt mean its bad quality, sure, a lot of things from there tend to be not so great i suppose, but as far as i am concerned, pearl is killer, and their taiwan!!

much love for everyone! i was just expressing an opinion, no disrespect intended :)
The only reason he used them is because the studio wanted him to use their drums. It would be very time consuming to bring his set in, set it up, attach mics, and fiidle with the EQ to get a good sound. Plus, the "drum doctors" he uses are familiar with their own drums and their optimal tunings. It's the same reason why he used Zildjians on the album.

I think this isn't true. DW pedal have some problems, but i'm pretty sure the other hardware is really sturdy and durable. I'm not sure though.

Despite what anybody has heard, DWs are actually very good drums. I've played them on many occasions and they do sound great. With that said, I don't think they sound any better than Pearl. They use thin shells on all their kits and the sound is very comprable to Pearl MMX with Super Hoops. They do have some cool finishes and thier hard ware is durable enough (very similar to gibraltar). The reason I play Pearl is that they offer so much more value. DWs are just as good as an MMX, but not any better and they cost so much more. With Pearl, you're getting just as good a drum kit for a whole lot less $$$. Also, I really dislike DWs new Lug design (it reminds me of circus clowns). I do love DW pedals though. They are so smooth.

pelaminack: what "new" lugs are you talking about? There's nothing on the DW website about new lugs.

I'm talking about their standard round lugs that have been on their kits for the last 3 or 4 years. I loved DW drums when they first came out in the early 90s. They were very classy. But they changed thier hardware in the late 90s and now they just look tacky in my opinion. They still sound great though.

I also saw that about Chad playing DW/Paiste in the studio. I know its up to record producers and engineers when it comes to recording, but I some how felt that Chad's remarks on the Pearl video were scripted. (I got that impression from most of the endorsers on the video) Just goes to show you want a strong endorsement deal will do to a guy. Funny considering Chad was a prominent DW hardware endorsers. This was before Pearl bust out with their eliminators and updated hardware.
About DW. I own a 2003 DW kit. I like the sound, but looking back I could've had so much more if I went with Pearl (It was really tough decision). DW hardware isn't made in-house from raw materials like Pearl or Yamaha. It must be made by 3rd party overseas factories like Gibraltar - hense some similarites in cymbal and tom stand design.
I don't what which lugs you are referring to, as DW lugs have always been the round camco style. Are you talking about the pacific lugs?

Pearl made video called Pearl - The Company The Drums and The Artist That Play Them. It was free at most Pearl dealers, but its mostly interviews, with only a couple of cool clips of people playing. I swiped two of them.

chad plays gretch and paiste in the studio im 100% sure of that. He also uses his 1981 vintage black beauty snare as well. But u guys might have seen him playing a DW im not saying you didn't but these days you cant be shure who plays what as artists always have hidden gear and stuff like that.
A Chad Smith signature MRX!!!!! what colours does it come in and does it have 2 floor toms and a single tom on a stand!!!!!

I've seen a photo of Chad playing a kit in the studio. It was DW toms, a custom made birch kick drum and i think his 14x5.5 Brady jarrah ply snare.
He has been known to use Sensitone II snares and black beautys also his Sig snare (but rarely). Apparently he has a HUGE collection of snares.
Also, i know for a fact that Give It Away was recorded on a 4 piece vintage Ludwig, although the snare was a "thin" (probably 14x4) Tama bell brass.
He has also been seen playing Exports in some videos!
dw are very nice drums although its kinda strange to pay so much money for drums that dont come equipped with die-cast hoops but rather triple flanged. They do sound awesome and are very beautiful looking drums but if i had a choice i'd rather a nice set of Pearl Masters BRX series

which album does he use zildjians on?
i own a MMX
but when i played a DW.. i love it way more than my MMX. i went to a store and looked at a masterworks snare..the store guy said it was a teal over tamo.. but the grain looks exactly like normal maple. i think in quality wise.. pearl loses to DW. pearl';s exotic wood looks and etc is no where near DW. i know many ppl will disagree with me.. hardware is another story, pearl wins, no doubt. this is my opinion, feel free to disagree. i would say" cosmetics" of DW is far superior to pearl.

I agree. although, in the studio, alot of times, you have to work with what the engineer is used to... we have no idea what the circumstances are here, lets not bring down good ol' Chad... hehe

I've seen a photo of Chad playing a kit in the studio. It was DW 12"-14"-16"Toms in Champagne Sparkle Finish Ply, Vintage Rogers Holiday Bass Drum [I think, Red Wrap finsh], Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic Snare
On Rhythm Method, Chad's used Vintage Ludwig Pioneer [6 Lugs] 14"x4 Snare Drum, Sound nice !!!
