Hey all,
For some reason I decided today that I am going to purchase a set of conga's and bongo's, possible a djembe, too. Maybe my recent decision had something to do with a gig this weekend that got rained out (sort of) and ended up being an acoustic show...however i was unable to play my new MMX's and i had to beat on a guitar case....grrr.
Anyway I was looking at these Pearl conga's, the lower line in fiberglass. I live in Mississippi and the weather is humid and always stupid, so my drums will be in a room that is 73 degrees, and then if i have to move them outside to 95 degree sun, then all the drums fog up and get moisture on them. So i think the fiberglass will hold up better.
Does anyone have a close up pic of the badges on the pearl or the cheaper LP conga's? I just wondered how well they matched the bages on the MMX. Oh I have a diamond burst kit by the way, so i thought the black fiberglass conga's would look good.

I play a Pearl MRX kit that is all "piano black" color and I use all 3 Pearl Elite congas, the Elite bongos, and the 14" Elite djembe in the black fiberglass color! It think it's awesome ... nothing looks better with the black drums on stage! Pearl also has a bunch of other percussion "toys" and cowbells that are black as well!
If you've got the Diamond Burst kit with black hardware, then the black fiberglass look is a perfect complitment! I also like the badges because they are very similar (much more so than combining LP stuff).
Also, if you're looking for a nice compact set-up, then I'd suggest getting the black QRS multi-stand (with the bongo bracket adapter) too because it enables you to mount a conga, both bongos, and a djembe all on the same stand.
Another thing that I'd suggest is (due to the humidity in Mississippi) that you replace the stock Pearl skin heads with synthetic heads (preferably, the Remo Nuskyn heads). It's expensive, but it saves the time of having to detune and retune the hand drums everytime that you gig in such a climate.
As a tip, the Nuskyn heads are only available in the 14" size for Pearl djembes, as well as the Elite series congas and bongos, so you'd want to consider only these items if you want the Nuskyn heads to match!

Thanks MusicMan and Glen....
We dont do a lot of acoustic shows, but i wes pretty aggrivated when i couldn't do anything but drink beer the whole time, haha. I need to work on my percussion skills anyway. I havent done a lot of conga work since college....only about a year ago, but still.
Plus the Priemro series isnt that expensive. How do the two series compare in sound? I'm assuming you could compare it to say an Export Series and an MMX kit. I'm i right in my assumption or would it be more like a Session/MMX comparison?
Also, I've used LP stuff in the past, so I've never heard any of the pearl percussion, but i'm sure it sounds great.
Glen, you got a close up of the Primero badges?

Hey there are not any pics of the Mini conga and the Mini Djembe on the website, anyone got a pic??... i can get the conga for like 35 bucks! is in like a toy or something? I was thinking about using it like a shot drum on a set of marching tenors if i could mount it to that crazy contraption above, would that work Glen??? Thanks again guys, I've never bought conga's and stuff before...

That's definately a possibility, but you are putting light duty drums on a heavy duty stand. It will work though. One thing you may want to consider is the PC1000CA/3 Casters that go with the QRS stand. If you're on stage and you have to move this, its a whole lot easier with wheels...trust me!
Also, Remo makes heads that will fit the Primero Fiber Congas, but not the Fiber Bongos as of yet...so you may want to consider that. If you de-tune your drums slightly when you're done playing you should have no problems with natural skins, but humid outdoor shows can cause you problems.
for more info on the QRS stand there is a downloadable QuickTime clip you can get from the homepage of the Pearl website.
I hope this info helps...

Who makes that stand that holds the djembe and conga? Is it peiced together with different parts? Where can I get one? How much? I play pretty hard, how sturdy? That thing could be the answer....very sweet!!

Its a Pearl PC1000QRS Stand. The QRS stands for Quick Release System for it has one lever that locks your drums down in about one second.

As Glen said it's the QRS multi-stand. It's very heavy and very sturdy!
