The Colts have a video up on the DCI FanNetwork that shows them opening up their new drums, a grey sparkle color with chrome hardware, very nice.

Carolina Crown has green bass drum heads, but I'm not sure what the drums are actually gonna look like.

Phantom's drums are a deep blue marble color, the same color as the Blue Stars drums, with chrome hardware- they look SICK!

EDIT:

Blue Devils drums are an old school white marine pearl color with chrome hardware/logo. They look very, very nice.

As far as anyone else, I know nothing. I'll be going down to San Antonio to see Crossmen rehearsing, I've got some friends marching there, I heard their drums look sick, so we'll see.

I actually don't have it with me because it's currently being shipped from Toledo, OH to California.

But my heads are Evans Hybrid White and Mx5 are comming on Monday.

I'll be sure to post pictures of the drum for you when it comes in next week.

Hows the combo with the heads sound?

Pictures of your drum?

I love looking at drums. Lol..fetish.

The drum sounds great, once I got the drum sounding great with the snares off, I started messing with the tension on the guts, so I can tune them up high and get a wet BD 2001/2002 sound, or I can tune them down for more of a dry, BD 2006, Bluecoats 2007 sound. I love it.

I have an older pic of my drum, from a few months ago, when I had a Hybrid Grey head on it, I'll throw that up. I haven't gotten a pic of it with the white head on top. It has two Dynasty Logos on it, the white one being the orginal one, I wanted to make it have a Glassmen 06 look I guess, I think it looks cool.

Haha, I have a bit of a drum fetish too I suppose, I love seeing drum finishes.

Hahaha, I'm pretty sure I hear sarcasm..haha!

Naw, it's a regular 14" snare, I didn't see the benefit of me having the modular system since this is my personal drum.

Yeah, I tune it up with the snare turned off, and then I tune the guts, then I turn the snares on. I think I stole the process from Mike McIntosh. He's got a video on Evans' video library on how to tune a snare drum.

I can't wait to get my 2008 Glassmen Drum.

I got it for 425.00 plus shipping with Carrier, Stand and Cover.

I was going to go with the whole, White Max/Falam 2k but then I was like "Nah, I been using that combo way to long now. Ooo Evans has the Hybrids. /skeet."

Ps: You got AIM?

Oh. I don't have Facebook. I have myspace. Lol...

I feel the Max Series feel somewhat harsh on the hands. Don't get me wrong, they sound great and have a large scale of tuning options but after playing on another high school's drum with a Hybrid on, what a major difference.

Did you get the old batch of Hybrid's Grey when they first came out? They baked in the sun like eggs on a pan.:p

I agree with you on the Max's, I never really got comfortable with them. I first played the Hybrid Grey's at the Bluecoats camp last year and fell in love with them. But then I bought a head that pulled on me after a month of very little use, Evans replaced it, and then about a month ago, at around 1 in the morning, it just exploded on me...so I bought a Hybrid White and I'm very happy with it.

My old High School used White Max's over No-Collar Ambassadors, which I loved, but I always wanted to try Evans, and I got my chance after the Coats camp.

I'm really looking foward to the System Blue products from Evans. I'm sure they'll make Evans top tier like they did with Dynasty and now with Pro-Mark.

For a big name drum company, their such a little dog in the marching field.

True, but I mean, most of the corps have staff that are tied to the company (Rennick- Dynasty; ScoJo- Dynasty; Gusseck- Pearl, etc) It'd be kinda hard to get them to switch when they have ties that are that close to those big companies.

That, and I think if a big name corps were to switch, they would wait for all the other corps to tell them whats up first. I personally don't like them that much, but then again, they haven't been time tested like the others have.

I mean when BD switched, no one really field testing Dynasty in 2000.

It was pretty much a hit or a miss.

This is true, I forgot about that. I think it probably comes down to brand loyalty/ties. I know that BD kinda broke that, since they used Yamaha for so long before they switched. Who knows, maybe something may switch in the next few years, but I don't know for certain. I can't really see any of the top 6 using Mapex. I could see Boston, using them, but not any of the bigger names.

I don't know how to work this damn siggy, it won't show up.

Yeah, I've played on one too. It's sounds nice and gives the head a drier sound without implying the bottom snares but from a far distance like on the field I could barely noticed if it was a tuning method or the drum itself.

Just save the picture to your harddrive, then upload it to the Sig using the little tools in that section. When you want it to go in your sig, press add to sig or whatever. then you can center it or whatever.

And yeah, sometimes it's hard to tell how the sound changes if the drum isn't tuned or whatever.

Funny thing, freshman year in high school we had this reallllllllllly old pre ffx type drum and I slapped a falam head on it and used a drill bit to tune the drum. I cranked it so much, the head was above the rim. Sounded really good, till it imploded.

I actually liked it better when Cavies was with XL, they just seemed to have their own style rather than becoming every Yamaha endorsed corps with Randall May. XL carriers are actually quite comfortable if you fit the certain size requirements.

Up close BDs drums look sweet. but from the stands they just look white so to me that finish kind of failed.

Phantoms drums look sweet (although I am not a fan of kitchen counter tops as drum colors) just still not sure how the blue ties into their show.

Same deal with Glassmen's drums. For the last couple years BASF was painting the shells for them. Doesn't look like it this year.

closer look at the drums and uniforms. still wondering about the carriers. If Pearl is trying to design their own. It's a little crazy to go back to J rods after marketing the posto carriers

ChiaPet
06-17-2009, 10:27 AM
Well if you think about it, Randall May was the one to make the carriers not pearl. They just made the carriers for Pearl and Yamaha to use. Just like how XL makes carriers for Ludwig, Mapex and Premier.

I think Pearl is trying to do the whole Dynasty thing. "Make our own drums and carriers." I think it if was a Randall May carrier, it would have the logo sticker somewhere on the carrier.

I have a 14" Dynasty that I posted on an earlier page, and then I was given two Ludwigs from '74. Both were used by drum and bugle corps in New York, The Squires and The Gauchos. I have a cousin who marched with the Squires and he gave me his drum that they used during their last season and he also gave me his friends drum from The Gauchos.

The Squires drum is a standard white wrap, the other is a black marine pearl color. Both are 15"ers.....wooo! No pictures though, I'm in the process of restoring them.

That's what I was thinking. I was going to order a custom SFZ in Blue Fade but when I found out they had leftover Corps drums I took a look at the list and decided to order that Madison Snare. I had a hard time deciding because they had one in Cranberry gloss (this years finish) that I thought was beautiful. They also have Cadets, Bluecoats, Crown, Cavies, Crossmen, and Colts drums available. I'm a huge Madison honk so I chose the 2005 Green drum. If it's Madison - it really SHOULD be green! Bye the way, pics of that 2008 Phantom Snare would be great!
Anyway - No 6 month wait, and I get a drum made for my favorite corps' 20th anniversary with Yamaha.

To be honest I really don't know yet. I have actually never played on a kevlar head (yes- I'm an old fart). I will probably replace the factory heads with new Remos but not sure which ones yet. SUGGESTIONS ANYONE?

My Ludwig has Ludwig mylar heads and sounds so damn good. Remember, in my days we cranked them, but they didn't sound like floor tiles. I imagine I'll take it a bit tighter than the challenger, but nowhere near as high as the DCI drumlines do. Just personal preference. This drum will probably see very little playing time - at least right now but I still just had to have it.....

You could always do a Remo Black or White Max over a Collarless Ambassador. You'd be able to tune the bottom head just like you would on your challenger but you could still get a wonderful tension from the top head all the same.

Right now on my Dynasty I have a Evans Hybrid White over the Evans MX5, white is similar to a White Max over a Falams 2. Sounds great, but it probably wouldn't be the sound you want.

ChiaPet
06-26-2009, 06:14 PM
I would recommend a Evans Hybrid White with Mx5.

It's more easier on the hands than compared to the White/Black Maxes and you can tune the head to a lower/softer feel without risking a nice sound from the head itself.

The Yamaha rep emailed the tracking number yesterday afternoon. As I thought the drum wasn't actually shipped until Monday but that's not his fault. It will be here before the weekend at least.

Back on topic - I found this closeup of the Cavaliers snareline. Got it in an email from drum foundry - I guess they did the Cavies' custom finish this year. I wonder if those pretty brown drums from last year are under the gold wrap?

I don't think so jazzy; those drums have the May EQ system installed on them, last years drums didn't have that.

By all means, I could be wrong, but from how I see it, in order to do that work they'd have to replace the FF collar, remove all the airvents, wrap the drum, put new vents on, re-assemble the collar with the down tubes, and then put the drum back together.

On a side note, I think those drums last year were a one year deal, the Cavs turned 60 that year, so it's possible Yamaha did a one off for them to commemorate their successes.

Either way - I wonder how many groups use Drum Foundry for their finishes. I know Yamaha used to work with JIWI drums for custom finishes and they were bought out by Drum Foundry.

That's a good question. So far we know Cavs are using them, but they might be one of the only ones. Xmen, Coats, and Cadets all have semi-stock finishes that Yamaha did, but Crowns weird green could have been custom.

Do all of these guys have knee problems already?

Probably not, usually they use them just as a brace to prevent injuries or soreness. I used to use a brace on my knee in HS for rehearsals. But, those pics were taking during spring training and whatnot, so there's bound to be some injuries and soreness when you jump back into such a demanding activity.

OK - I did get the drum today. It is indeed new - pristine in fact. I will need to address the head choice today as it came with none! I am a little pissed because the shell does not have the Madison Scouts 20th anniversary badge on it. I was specifically told it did - in fact it's the reason I chose this drum. Here are a couple of pictures - I'm waiting to hear from the Yamaha rep to see if he can locate one of those badges and send it to me before I go buy heads for this.

EDIT - YAMAHA GUY EMAILED - HE HAS THE MS LABEL AND IS MAILING IT TODAY!

I hope this guy can locate the badge - I know it's not a big deal but I'm a huge Scouts fan and would love to have that little extra history attached. By the way - I'm fairly sure this is a Maple shell. Doesn't look like Birch to me. I read somewhere that Yamaha made custom Maple shells for DCI corps. I'll ask when the Yamaha guy gets back to me. This sucks - I'm over 40 and have been feeling like a teenager this week waiting for this drum to arrive. :(

Woo, guess who has new pictures?

If you guessed me, then you are correct.

ChiaPet is serving a ban at the moment so he sent me pictures of his newly acquired 2008 Phantom Regiment snare.

Sorry about the size, that's how he sent the photos to me, so if you want bigger shots I'll have to ask for them.

And here is his review from another site-

Hello. Look what the cat dragged in early this morning!

To start off, I must say that this drum is a BEAUTY. Pictures do not serve any justice to this drum.
One thing I must tell you is that the laminated shell finish is not actually GOLD or BROWN, it's yellow! That's right! You must see it in person to notice the hint of yellow it gives off.

When I first wanted to buy a used corps drum, I purchased a 2008 GLASSMEN Snare drum but due to Columbus Percussion and one of their Glassmen Representatives, they got my order mixed up and they couldn't sell me the drum because another school had already purchased it. However, I did purchase the drum before the school but since the school bought the whole set, they figured it was easier to let all the drums go rather than one by one. So I was told that my "glassmen" snare would come in about 2 weeks, I ended up waiting a month for it until I heard that it was never going to be shipped in the first place. So then Dynasty apologized to me about the mix up, this and that and offered me two choices. Blue Devils 2008 or Phantom Regiment 2008. Growing up in California, I am in love with the Blue Devils but their drums weren't really that special to me. So I chose the Phantom Regiment snare because well...they did win a Championship and High Drums! So I waited another month and finally..it came!

Now...Pros and Cons of buying used drum corps equipment!

Pros:
Custom Finish and Hardware[Depending on what corps you buy from or brand]
Free drumheads..? [My Phantom drum came with a Black Max and a Falam II already on the drum]
Cheap pricing compared to an exact replica.
HISTORY! The drum comes with DCI HISTORY! CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Cons:
Used [Depending on which Corps or Brand you buy from, gear used by drum corps are known for being abused, heavily used, etc.] I was lucky enough to get one of the better conditioned snares.
Scratches N' Dings [It won't be scratch or dinged free]

Enjoy!

I was wondering the same thing. He and I talked a little about Crossmen in his snare thread. I've got a few friends marching there right now, one on snare and the other on tenors; it's pretty cool that he marched for X-men during what a few would call the "Golden Age" the corps and the drumline; those guys could play some beats.

I will have to do that for sure, I'm in 110, row 10 seat 18 if I remember correctly. I'll probably be wearing a Bluecoats shirt. And I agree, AC is a must when it's 105 out like it is today...sheesh.

Crossmen polo's shouldn't be that hard to spot...unless someone forgets to send the memo that everyone is wearing them that day. Haha

And I've got some more stuff from ChiaPet; new pics and a video review of his drum.

Video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGN1Rfk0f7M&feature=channel_page

Pics- Go to the site, the pics are a bit too big to put here, haha

I'd like to meet you too, I don't think I've met anyone on the PDF in person, haha.

It is unfortunate though, there is no beer...and I'm underage. No big, we can sit and drink a...tea or something, haha.

Haha, will do. Between me running to the lot and to see performances, I'll make time to visit a fellow drummer and PDF'er.

. Lot's of folks don't like the sound inside a dome but I'm willing to compromise because AC is a right in Texas!

Oh my god the AC in the Alamodome is sweeeet. I remember rolling my rack towards the tunnel after our warm up and I could feel the cool air just rushing out out of it. soooo good. inside was even better. it wasnt as boomy as i expected. still a tough listening situation, but it was not bad compared to the georgia dome. f that place...

The alamodome is huuuge too. I stood on the sidelines after encore and just looked up in amazement. After the fans cleared out it was just us inside the dome, so i hit one of the concert bass drums as loud as i could. it was balls. it echoed forever.

Sorry I missed this post - YES! I really enjoyed seeing all the corps. I didn't do any lot visits this year. Just basked in the AC and watched the show. Not a fan of the synthesizers, but enjoyed the performances anyway. Can anyone tell me why Phantom isn't up there with BD and Cavies? They were incredible! I've not been much of a Cadets fan the last several years but I was impressed with them on Saturday. I think Cavies and BD are going to fall. Crown is just to artsy fartsy for me but they have a great hornline.

I think Phantoms toil in the lower ranks is due to their loss of their color guard caption head and their visual designer. If I remember correctly, both of them went to Crown at the end of 2008; at least the CG caption head did.

Whoever they brought in isn't cutting it apparently, for some reason PR's suffering from a case of Champion's Fever; they want the Gold again but things just aren't working right for them.

That all makes sense I guess. Since I tend to zone in on the drumlines when I'm at a drum corps show I usually am oblivious to what the color guard is doing unless there's some incredibly hot young lady out front (See Phantom last year)..... Still thought they were better than Bluestars and Bluecoats.

What's with taking off the uniforms (Bluecoats)... Looks too damn WGI for me!

I have no idea what the idea behind it is....I'm a 'Coats fan through and through and it doesn't make much sense to me at all.

They look cooler in uniform than they do wearing the sky on their Under Armour shirts, haha.

Would anybody know if this finish on the ex Phantom Dynasty snare is a Wilson Art finish? The Wife (aka the Warden, or ball & chain) is giving me a Dynasty snare for my 50th birthday and I am somewhat frustrated by the finish selection thus far.

Why not go with a Yamaha? They still have snares that were custom made for DCI lines. They are all maple shells, chrome hardware, and they have used and new ones. Email percussionquestions@yamaha.com for a list of what they have left. They have MTS and SFZ models, and best of all, no waiting. I got mine in less than a week after ordering it. They are a little more $$ but they are far better quality drums than the Dynasty's and you'd be buying a piece of DCI history.

So, where do you guys go to get your actual corps drums?

I'd love to get one of the '09 SCV drums. Or the '08 Cavies with the Wedge.

Wait, no... the Boston Crusaders '09, ooohhh.

Aww...Jazzy's hatin' on the Dynasty's...hahaha.

PM member ChiaPet; he owns one of Phantom's drums from 2008; he'd be the guy in the know as far as Dynasty goes.

Nothing wrong with that. I like my Dynasty, but I'd rather have a Yamaha; it's what I played in high school and I've always liked the way they sound.

I agree about Phantom though; Rennick knows how to tune a drum.

Just curious, since Dynasty is the only marching snare I haven't played, does the "not-as-good" sound possibly come from the hardware being drilled directly into the shell?

No, the "not-as-good" sound comes from people assuming that people who own Dynasty's always tune them to sound like tabletop snares. Think 00-03 Blue Devils. When they became the big Dynasty group they had their snares cranked to the max and people hated it, so Dynasty got stuck with a bad rap that they sound horrible.

At the tensions these drums are under drilling or making the drum free floater is more of a personal design than anything. Yes, there are slight differences, I won't deny that, but you're essentially going to get the same sound regardless of the drum; it all comes down to who's actually tuning the drums themselves.
