View Full Version : An interesting drum I saw..

I was at a concert awhile, and the drummer did some pretty cool percussion. He played on thing I've never seen before though.

He had a djembe, but I noticed I heard a tamborine all through his playing, though I didn't see anyone with one. After the show, my friend and I went to talk to him, and asked about it. Turns out he had a tamborine mounted inside the drum, below the head.

I can't remember if this was a special drum, or completely homemade, but I've never seen anything like it since.

Anyone seen anything at all like this??

Yeah, since the djembe has a narrowing bottleneck shape in the shell, you can just take off the top head and drop a tambourine inside the drum (assuming it's larger than the diameter of bottleneck part of the shell so it doesn't fall out the bottom).

The tambourine activates when you hit the drum due to the vibration from the head and the shell. No need to mount it with hardware or anything. It just bounces around inside the shell. It's good for a general "jingle" sound on every beat, but is difficult to mute or control.

Hmm, if I get myself a djembe, I shall have to invent a way to mount a tamborine in there, but also be able to turn it 'on' or 'off'. Some sort of mute. Some day... :p

I was just thinking ... the tambourine inside the djembe might be an interesting thing to do with the DW drum lifter so they can be played together with the foot!

That would be a good idea...

I settled for playing with the djembe I had sitting on top of a tamborine. Or I'd shake the tamborine by putting it on my foot!
