just bought a kit with an 18x16 kick a 12" tom and 15" floor. I'm curious what these will look like set up....mainly what the kick looks like with the rest of the kit.

oh yeah I've always heard these small kicks sound great and punchy....is this what I can expect from it or what?

thanks!

I don't have a pic but I've got a Trick kit with an 18" kick that I use. It's got a great punchy sound to it. I mostly use it for jazz combo type of stuff but I also do military ceremonies with it and don't have a problem keeping the troops in step.

My Gretsch is definately punchy. I got that sound by using an Emad clear on the batter side and the reg. logo on front.

I've played with a Tama 18" Kick in a set-up before and it sounded pretty good! Very punchy but not as much volume as larger kick drums. Would suit drum and bass or jazz best but i have seen them being used in rock and alternative set-ups before.

you didn't say what kind of 18" bass you got...Masters MMX 4 ply Maple, Masters MRX Maple, BRX Birch? I've got a MRX 18" that I built a little gig kit with. The Toms are Sesssions SBX birch, all in all a great little kit. I cut down the ICON 501 (Straight) Arms to make the entire thing more compact.

8x10 and 11x14" toms, 14", 16" 18" crashes, 20" ride, 13" M/S HiHats, 2000 hihat and bass pedals. Of course it's not going to sound like a 22 or 24, but for what it is, it's a GREAT little bass.

thanks keep them coming....

it a masters brx (birch) in black mist. it was $450 on ebay, i just couldn't pass it up. i've been wanting a practice kit and came across this. I ido plan on using it for gigs too. i couldn't bring myself to buying s serperate kit with the same sizes drums as my reference.

i'm going to be cutting the 12x10 down to a 12x7 or 12x8. the floor is a 15x14 i think. i may bring it down to a 15x12 or 15x11.....just to keep the smaller odd size drum thing going....

that mrx looks like....i use paiste traditionals so i guess i'm half way there for jazz.....but i play mostly rock stuff (yes with the traditionals) so it'll be big cymbals and smaller drums! i like being different!

20"light ride (crash)
20"medlight ride (crash)
22"medlight ride (crash/ride)
15"medlight hats

You might want to head over here.... I know it's only four pages and all, but it would be real nice if you could add pics of your kit/set when you can. http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/showthread.php?t=216797

Here's a few snaps of mine... :)

Can't speak for him, but I use a riser.

The middle picture in the studio is where I didn't have a riser on the set.

I don't hit on center, but approximately 1/2 length (about an inch or so) of the beater above the center of the head

So...about the riser. the Center line of an 18" drum is about 9"...with a 22" drum it's about 11". So what you're trying to do is raise the front of the drum 2" to get the beater to hit center.

I personally use the following by Canopus, it's simple, easy, and LIGHT weight. There ARE craddles that you can buy but that defeats going smaller and lighter.

yeah i searched for awhile last night and found something that looks like that but couldn't find who made it. do you have any idea what its called? Canopus doesn't list it on thier website.

thanks for the link....when I get it all back together I'll post up some pics.....I'm cutting the 12" tom down right now to either a 12x8 or 12x7....any recommendations?....I'm leaning toward the 12x8 maily because it looks cooler...i do like the larger sound too....i'm liking this kit on ebay:

here's the link for the riser: http://www.canopusdrums.com/english/html/products/acceItem/acceItem-e.html

12x8 is fine...that kit was pretty cool...there's been a couple of them listed after NAMM 08. I LOVE My reference, the only drums I'm missing are an 18" Bass and a 15", with the 12" that would make a sweet little gig kit.

the owner of a local shop here has a ref in 18x18 bass drum, 10x8, 13x11 and 15x15. it looks cool.
