Who is your choice for the best drum line of all time?
Mr. Intensity
06-18-2008, 12:07 AM
1997 Blue Devils
I love that line, they're insane, and they play some ridiculous notes.

Even though I marched in the 90's, those Blue Devils lines in the 80's were badass. Very intimidating.

1979 North Star - If you haven't seen the video - see it. OK they didn't win the drum trophy - SCV did by a tick but the Chrome wall was something to behold!

Ahh, so that's where the "chrome wall" term came from. I always thought it was developed much later in the 80s. You have any video links, or is it just a simple YouTube search away?

Cadets '93.
I know they aren't on the list.
I know they didn't win drums.
But listen to the incredible amounts of notes they are playing.
It's some great stuff.

To tell you the truth, Cadets '93 were great, but not one of my favourites that summer. I will not and could never deny they played a ton of notes, but I was in those stands in '93. I could hear some dirt. I think it was due to an over-hyped snare line. A tad too aggressive.
I see your sig...Dutch Boy '07 eh? In the 90's, I used to compete against Cadets of Dutch Boy in the old ODCA circuit (Ontario Drum Corps Association). I had quite a few friends from that corps.

Don't think it's on youtube. I have the show on my 79 legacy CD. If you buy the DCI fan membership it's available there as well. This years fan membership is like $69.00 but you can view the entire legacy collection online, plus the live webcasts. A much better deal than last year.

Oh, okay. I just have to go borrow that from my friend. He's got the whole set, I'll steal it from him for a day and watch it.

You won't be disapointed. The North Star show itself is one of my all time favorites - the music kicks @ss and the Soprano soloist (Jerry Noonan) is one of the best, if not THE best in history. Make sure and watch some of the others, too because that was a great year for drum corps. The drill wasn't anything like today but the music was better. SCV and BD were awesome. You have to watch Spirit of Atlanta as well - loudest hornline in DCI history - hands down.

I think I've seen the Spirit one. We used to watch a DCI show every morning and I think we watched that one. I remember telling my director that there was no way anyone could stand in front of that for too long. I'll check it out for sure, I enjoy watching the old school shows, there's just something about them that the corps today don't have- not to say the corps today aren't fantastic.

I can't blame them for overhyping, though.
That show had so much energy.

I seem to hear that a lot from Americans that come up and march Canadian corps.
Poutine is the greatest food on the face of this earth!
Whenever you age-out don't forget that there is a competitive all age corps in Canada just a few hours down the road from Kitchener in Kingston! ;)

My first drum corps experience was 1979 - Drums along the Rockies in Denver. My band director and another school's director organized a bus trip from Albuquerque to Denver for students from both bands. DCI didn't have a show in Albuquerque back then. Spirit won that night, but the lineup was so incredibly good. Spirit, SCV, Madison, Crossmen, Blue Stars, North Star, Sky Ryders, Velvet Knights, and Florida Vanguard I think. I was hooked from there.

Having been there at that time, I can say that it is a wonder that I have as much hearing left as I do. That incredible sound was the product of the late Jim Ott. It was a pleasure and a privilege to know and work with him.

OK, when I read the title of this thread, I immediately thought "BRIDGEMEN!!" (and honestly figured it wouldn't be on the list) but to my suprise, there they were! You younger guys need to take a trip on the way back machine and check these guys out. You'll never look at yello raincoats the same again :P
Once these guys tried to make a giant pyramid on the field, and it more often than not came tumbling down in a(n intoxicated) mess.... ahh, back in the day. :)
Dennis Delucia was/is the ****.... hes a cool mofo too. I got to spend lots of time with him during my years at Crossmen. Very stand-up guy. I would have had to vote twice if my old team was on the list.... We had an otustanding book in 91 and 92 if i do say so myself :p Mark Thurston is a great caption head.

We're doing the same show! Whoo. Now I'm really looking forward to this season. I have the tenor music to Minuano (my instructor wrote the parts) and it looks like it will be pretty interesting. Looking forward to hearing it.

When we played it, there was more black than white on the charts. Lots of stick changes, brushes, routes, rakes, jingle sticks, soft mallets, regular mallets, vega sticks, timbale sticks, we also had a cowbell mounted off the 13" drum on the right.
PM your e-mail and I can send you an MP3 of the show. We had 9 snares, 4 tenors, 5 basses, 5 cymbals and like 10 pit.

So many choices...I'd probably go with Cadets '93, they could rip. There have been many recent drumlines that have been awesome, PR 06, SCV 04, and The Cadets from the past few years to name a few, but I don't think they've quite stood the test of time.

Excellent post.
There have been a ton of great modern lines, but I don't think they will ever stand up to the test of time like some of those famous solos from the 70's and 80's have. I'll never figure out why, but it's just the way it is.

As much as I love the Cavaliers, I can't believe you'd put a line that pulled so badly from the ensemble on finals night above their '00 line that played far more difficult notes piss clean. Frameworks is a great show, but I think 2000's book is far more ambitious.

BD 87 and Vanguard 80 for the " old school "
Star 93 and S.C.V. 98 for my " old school "
Cavaliers 2001 (? ) Niagra year Phantom for the last year or 2.
For me this is all based on the quality and level of their book , groups who really changed things and brought new ideas to the drum corps table and these groups just played silly clean.

But '03 Blue Devils is also one of my favorites. Especially because of the snare duet at the begining

Lots of good lines in 1985. Loved BD's show, Spirit had an awsome pit, Suncoast Sound had a good bass line... Voted BD 86, but BD had killer lines in the 80's
