Better yet - what was your single most favorite non-drumline, non-steel band performance in the last year? recorded or otherwise?

I think Highlife was Phil Fiani wasn't it?

Yes, Highlife is by Phil Faini...I just was unable to remember at the time. Lot's of fun to work up when you have a large group.

Omphalo is a lot of fun to work up when you want something light but not "typical"
Westlake has a unique Australian sound. You need 4 decent marimbists to pull it together.

Me and two of the blokes played Stubernic this year. We sucked pretty badly back in February, but we got it together for the State competition and it turned out very nicely. I have some video footage, but I'm too lazy to actually upload it to youtube or anything.
I'm not keen on most of the Rowloff kinds of ensembles. I feel like they're too basic and not advanced enough, but I did enjoy El Caribe.
A really great ensemble is Night on Bald Mountain (it's published by Drop 6). Wow, really great stuff.

Some of my favorites are:
*Blue Rondo A La Turk-Go Fish Music
Equal fire-Go Fish Music
*Ogoun Badagris-Christopher Rouse
*Ballet, The Highway, Heavy Metal, Identity Crisis, In the Hall of the Mountain King-All by Drop 6
Frankenstein-Row Loff (fun filler piece-opener maybe?)
If you go to www.norwinband.net (percussion link) you can hear our version of the pieces with the *
Also, we are on MySpace (Norwin Percussion Ensemble)
Thanks for this thread, I am going to check out some of the earlier suggestions for our rep. this year.

We had a drill chart somewhere? I don't really remember learning it though, but I remember a packet with stuff like that in it. This is our schools huge fine arts show that costs like 20 bucks to get in so we could pretty much go crazy.

Four of my school's percussionist did a bucket piece called "Smash Getaway". We did the hell out of it too... concert, tours, talent show. I have a DVD of it, but I don't know how to rip it and upload it to YouTube. Anyone know how?

can't help you with the tech stuff, but I know the piece, I did at my school, but we only played it for one show. It was seriously sweet.
we also did something called short circuits. check it out on youtube, theres a lot of good ones. it's basically a snare warm up with cool visuals.

I checked it out~! I just kept seeing dollar signs. I can't imagine with the black light you needed, the extra blue goo and the "outfits". Did you have to buy the black light?

...yeah, you suck. :) (talking about the funding of course). Seriously, though, that is really great that your school district understands. Ours does a pretty superior job for our area, but is NOTHING compared to the bigger BOA/Texas bands. Their's is OUTRAGEOUS...at least the marching side of things. How many kids do you have in your program (percussion)?
Does anyone know anything about Three Shades of C? Good or Bad? I am considering it for my 2nd tier kids.
Thanks!

our marching band director used to be the head marching band guy at UNC. He hired matt savage.
yeah, he's good.
our marching band is huge; maybe 40-50 people. our percussion ensemble ranges yearly from 15-20.

40-50 people? was that a typo or sarcasm? We are ProMark endorsers and use Matt's tenor sticks. Your PE is about the same size as mine. This is my fourth year at Norwin and I am loving it. The kids do what you tell them, for the most part, and just keep improving. We have 9 freshmen this year, which is good for the future, but means a growing year this year.
What are some other PE pieces you guys have done?

At my school, we played a pretty fun piece called "Diners Club". It has 6 parts, 3 'waiters' and 3 'patrons'. The song is pretty much telling a story of people in a restaurant, waiting to get their food, and as the song progresses, the patrons get more and more impatient and start tapping on plates, cups, bowls etc. It's really awesome!
This link isn't me, but its the song I'm talking about - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=WiSOPSiguOc

my schools doing another trash can piece similar to 'noises on'- the youtube link I posted earlier. it's written by one of our own students and is pretty awesome, imo. the show will be on march 14-16 so hopefully I'll post the video up around then.
