View Full Version : What do you guys play?
I was wondering, what does everyone play in marching band?
I played snare my first year, and have played bass for 3 years now.

Marched snare and bottom bass freshman. I'm full time tenor now. As you can see from my sig. We have two batteries. One for parade, and one for competition. The parade includes all percussion, and the competition (comp) includes a pit.

I can't do marching band my senior year though. :( I've got some half credits to make up... Stupid switch from a block schedule to a standard schedule has caused me some grief. But I'm still gonna watchover, and help out where I can at rehearsals and stuff. And hopefully I'm gonna go to Yamaha Sounds of Summer with my school as well. But my BD said I would easily be marching snare if I would be in it.

i love block scheduling: it gives me less classes in one day. lol
well, in Marching band/Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble/Jazz band/Pep band i play alto sax.
for Indoor i played cymbals my freshman year and this year (sophomore) i played snare. but we also made the switch from moving to standstill, which sucked. nobody really liked standstill this year, but it was better than nothing.

i was asked to play in 8th grade but i didn't want to since it was the first year of our high school in competition. i now wish i did. it would have been fun. well anyway.
i played top bass freshman year. would have been on snare but the kid playing top bass quit so i moved to bass. sophomore year played snare for both outdoor and indoor. junior year playing snare for both outdoor and indoor hopefully. we march 3 tenors, possibly 5 snare but we only have 4 drums right now so don't know, and will march 5 basses hopefully forever now. in my freshman year we marched 2 tenors, 3 snares and 4 basses.

I was invited to play in indoor 8th grade, so I was in pit then. I jumped to the snare line when I went into my freshman year of high school, and am now looking at another 3 years of snare.

Our school is tiny so we start marching in the 7th grade. I was in the pit for 7-8 but have been playing tenors since 9th and I'm going into my junior year now. New band director and new hopes.

Plot twist: BD wanted some help in pit cause it's all freshman who haven't much percussive experience. That's unfortunate in itself that all the talent goes into the line, but I'm gonna be the squad leader of the pit and play marimba. So I do get to do band. :D

I'm playing snare my first two years. Thing I will stick with it, and not move up to quints. This year, our drum instructor is going to write all the parts! Also, he rewrote the cadence this year.

Freshman-Bells in pit
Sophmore-Bass
Junior-Tenors
I love the tenors, but we were short on people, so my new bd put a freshman who normally plays bass clarinet on second tenors.
He plays really loud and pretty bad, it would have been better if he played something else.

Yes!!! It is hard to find people who are aware and appreciate the fact that playing in a bass line is harder and more musically challenging than playing snare drum. :D ...I <3 Bass Drums

Sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love bass and I very well be a life-long top-mid bass drummer, but it's not always as hard or harder than snare or tenors or pit or anything. All the aspects of the line have hard as well as less challenging writing.
