I would say timpani or snare, but I would choose timpani if I had to just pick one.

I agree. I like timpani and snare but if I had to pick one... timpani.

Timpani, bass drum, and suspended cymbal in that order. I really dig playing the bass drum on some music, it's definitely underrated but still a key part.

I love playing Timpani, as well as Suspended cymbals and concert chimes. Timpani by far the most though.

I enjoy timpani the most, but my work means that I play mostly snare, bass then a lot of accessory instruments. It's funny, because in college I focused mainly on keyboard percussion.

I enjoy snare drum. I also love playing triangle, it's kinda silly, but I love the little tinger.

Id choose Timpani if I knew how.

Marimba, where do you work at? I thought my job was one of the few that required mostly snare work.

All depends on the music and setting but since this is the band and orchestra section if I'm with an orchestra I like Timpani best with hand cymbals and triangle at a close second. If I'm playing solo though it's Marimba and snare all the way though, but I love all instruments in the part's good.

I'm the only person at my high school that can actually play timpani.

My favorite is marimba. Hands down.

I also dig auxilary percussion...tambourine, suspended cymbal, triangle, shaker...and...the ratchet.

I also really enjoy a good djembe.

Oh dude, how could I have forgotten to mention the triangle? It's a little enigma I tell ya!

Difficult to pick a favorite but I went with marimba because it has the biggest range.

I'm the only percussionist at my school who fluently reads both bass cleff and treble, so I've been forced to play timpani on a lot of music and it's definitely grown on me. So when I'm in band or orchestra I'll usually pick timpani. But by myself I love snare, and I try to play mallets. Really wish I would have actually tried in middleschool

It's too bad so many percussionists can't read music. It really limits what they can do later in life. It's so hard to convince a 6th or 7th grade drummer that he should spend a lot of time with marimba or timpani...

^Exactly. I kind of understand. When I was in 6th grade, I could name quite a few drummers... Ringo and Keith Moon and John Bonham and guys like that. I had bands that I liked and I could identify the drummer. But most kids that age have no idea who Cloyd Duff is or Robert Van Sice... nor do they really care, because those guys aren't on TV and the radio everyday and on t-shirts and stickers and all that stuff that appeals to younger people. By the time a person figures out that they really like marimba or timpani, they are already in High School or College and they've wasted a lot of years that they could have been playing and improving...

actually I always wanted to play timp even in middle school i rememebr back in 6th grade they were always covered, they looked so enticing, and we finally got one song that called for them (i was in beginning band and we definitely didnt play timpini, even that one song was once in a lifetime for beginning band) but i feel in love with them from that moment. For me it was the perfect blend, it was a drum, but with notes. It started out so i could seperate myself from other percussionist, i didnt ONLY read rhythms i had notes. I feel in love with them i was tuning by ear back in 7th grae, and i was pretty good at it. I enjoy timp
I only wish i also embraced the mallet instruments at that time

I would have to say that timpani have always pulled me in - there is so much to do and say from that seat that I am never bored. After that, playing a great bass drum, in a great room, with a great mallet, and its like I've had a full pot of coffee! For a lot of the same reasons as timpani, there is so much color and finesse possible from behind that instrument.
