OK, I'm knowledgeble here....lemme help ya.

These all refer to remo's ugly looking finishes. They are all printed fabric and in my opinion make the drums look ridiculously unprofessional and gaudy. I'll post pics to show you what I mean.

Now the earth one is the only one that doesn't, it's just a plain brown wrap. It's more durable than the others and looks the most like a real drum and not a toy. Go with that one.

That is if you're set on Remo. Remo's are good for durability and tunablity. They can be thrown around as you like and the plastic head keeps the tuning.

But you sacrifice that for a less than professional look and sound. Remo's don't sound as good as the true pro goods like Pearl and LP.

So my suggestion to you if you just want a djembe to have fun with, go with the remo earth finish.

If you want a pro instrument check out LP and Pearl.

Hope that helps.

Here...in this first pic Earth is the plain brown one up front, and fossil fantasy is behind it on the right.

Multi Mask is on the right here.

So as you can see, those finishes make the drums look like toys. Go with the Earth if you don't want to look like a carnaval performer.

thanks for the advice, i think i will look into the lp n pearl ones as i am looking for more professional djembe even though i am only a beginner.

Could recommend any particularly good models? i can probably pay up to £150 ($230)

thanks

Well at that price you should look at the Pearls. The LP djembe is around 300 at the least. Both are great drums, it's just a matter of Pearl being a little cheaper.

Starsandstraps -

I use the 14" size Pearl Elite fiberglass djembe and I'm really happy with it. It does sound noticably better than the Remo djembes on account of the real goat skin head that comes with the Pearl drum. I also like the 14" size because it has a great range of high and low tones, and it is just the right size for using alone, with a drum set, or with congas.

Also, I'd recommend the 14" size because it's easier to find replacements heads if necessary. For example, Remo makes a NuSkyn synthetic head that will fit the Pearl 14" djembe if you are in a situation where you need to have a synthetic head that is easier to keep in tune. The NuSkyn head is not the same (cheap) head used on the Remo djembes described above.
