Just as a brief summary, with Masterworks you can choose the shell thickness, configuration of woods used to make the shells, shell sizes, shell hardware and color, and last but not least a finish of your choice that can be unique to you as you are to the world.

For this buzz spotlight we plan to just focus on adding low-end punch drum shells.
The most exciting part of creating your kit is the ability to custom configure a composite shell, let me explain. Think of shell as a fine wood instrument that like these specific woods are chosen for each ply of the shell to provide a designated purpose for both sounds and/or aesthetics - kind of like a Violin.
We've tested literally every combination of composite shells possible using Maple, Birch, African Mahogany and other woods, different ply configuration and various shell thicknesses all in virtually every-size drum available. As a result it was determined the inner ply of a drum shell has the most effect of the sound causing the drum to take on those sound characteristics of the respective wood type used. And of these woods, for adding low-end punch to any shell configuration regardless of thickness-African Mahogany is the number one choice because it of it's extremely rich in bass frequencies, with beautifully smooth mids and a slight roll-off in the higher register. Drums made from African Mahogany have warmth and body that truly sets them apart from all others.
The following is a great example of how a Masterworks Bass drum shell might be configured to take full advantage of these incredible Masterworks options. Starting with a 6ply shell the drum will now have added projection and volume; then add 4 outer plies of Maple or Birch for their ease of finishing, beautiful grain and sound characteristics, next use 2 inner plies of African Mahogany to really boost bass turn up the low-end punch. We've done this configuration for many shows and consumers and many of us here at Pearl have personally worked with these types of shells using many types of heads - I have to tell you, having the Mahogany is like have a set of sub-woofers blasting out deep deep bass!
Although this is a very popular Masterworks composite, remember there is no wrong way to configure your shell and each drum in your kit can be different if you so choose. The only requirement is that plies must be specified in groups of 2, as in 2 outer plies of Maple plus 2 inner plies of African Mahogany for a 4 ply shell, or 4 outer plies of Maple plus 2 inner plies of African Mahogany for a 6 ply shell- I think you get the picture
Without question, if your main requirements are “bottom” and punch, African Mahogany should be your wood of choice.
