I am looking for the snare to complete a set that I have had since new in 12/68. The set was made by Pearl and sold by Sears. None of the drums are badged with "Pearl" or any other ID, however the original pedal and drum key have the Pearl logo. Looking through the 68 and 69 Pearl catalogs the set looks as though it was sold with a combination of parts from both years, but it was definitely made by Pearl. The cymbal and snare stands match 68. The bass pedal is a deluxe 68 or a standard 69. The tom mount on the bass is a rail mount as in 68. The high hat stand matches 68 except for the pedal, which is chrome stamped steel with rubber foot pad as in 69. I only have an old photo of the snare to reference as it was lost (long story) around 1979. It is clearly the chrome 8 lug snare #4614 in the 69 catalog. The shell is definitely 69, however the lugs on the drum that I am looking for were not the side cut lug (C-046) as pictured on the drum in the catalog. As near as I can tell from the old photo the lugs on the original snare were the rounder cut #C-045. I do remember all of the lugs in the set, including those on the snare, matching. The C-045 lug matches much better than the C-046 so I am pretty sure, odd as it may seem, that that is the way it was made. The snare pictured in the 68 catalog is definitely not the drum. The shell and throwoff are different. Does anyone know where I might locate a critter like this?

Does it look like this one?

Mine was made by Pearl, but has the TorDor badge on it.

That's the one!!! Got a spare laying around? Nice set. Like the color. It's exactly like mine, except mine is red sparkle.

I have one that's very similar that came with a Session series kit I picked up used. It has two notches running around the circumference of the drum. It has an early pearl badge... right now it's in pieces being cleaned. It's 5x14 chrome steel. The chrome it a little rough but not too bad. It has a clamshell style strainer, though the end of the strainer snapped off during shipping. :( It still works fine, though. I could part with it for very little, though there isn't selling allowed on the forum, so you'll need to private message me.
I'll take my camera home at lunch and snap some pics for you.

I'm hanging onto mine, but it sounds like Erwinner can help you out. He's a great contributor to the forum.

I think mine is a little later, but judge for yourself. The lugs seem more like the exports than those... I couldn't remember, since they tend to run together. (I have a few snares laying around check the link in my sig ;) ) If you think you can use any of it, let me know... I don't need it at all... I was going to get it up and running and give it to a friend of mine, but I got him and I floor tickets for the Foo Fighters tomorrow in Dallas, so he can just get over it. :)

I think, like you, that this one is a later model than the one that I am looking for. I appreciate you trying, however. I'll keep on searching. I know it's out there somewhere.

Phil,

Check on ebay for chrome (or metal) snares. You should be able to find one that is vintage without killing the bank.

When I got my kit in 1977 (I was in 7th grade), the guy I got it from included a red sparkle snare with luan (coarse/slightly rough) wood and re-rings. I know it needs a couple of lug inserts, and I know a drum shop where I might be able to get them. I literally only used the drum a few times, as I had the chrome one you saw and my 1967 Supra, which I still use. I know it was at least a few years old when I got it. Even though it was mostly in a case, there is a small tear/indentation in the edgeo fthe wrap.

It has the stick saver type hoop on top.

If I remember correctly, the inside of the lugs may say Pearl, but I have to check. There was not a badge on the drum when i got it. I'm thinking it is either 6 or 8 lug. I cleaned it a few months ago, and noticed that a couple lugs inserts were not working correctly, and that one of them had a tiny piece of metal broken off where it held the insert in place. Finding an old lug is probably an inexpensive proposition.

Even though it is red sparkle, it may not match.

PM if you're interested, and maybe we can work something out.
