What it do.
I'm wondering if anybody can suggest what heads sound best on the session kit. I have been using 2-ply heads (aquarian reference, I believe) but I'm wondering if a 1-ply head will be better for the drum, more specifically the evans EC-1. Also, if anybody knows how you can contact pearl to get a drum made, please let me know as well. Thanks all.

Teddy, what series do you have? Maple or Birch? I own an SMX-maple and my experience has been that 2-ply heads seem to muffle my drums too much. I have tried different 1-ply heads from different companies and they all sound good with plenty of resonance. EC-1's, G1's, Remo Ambassadors, Attack Med.1-ply, should all sound great. Coated or clear. If you have Birch though a 2-ply head IMO has a better chance of working out for you because of the brighter, sharper tone.

Yeah, I have the SMX, and I was having the same problem with the head kind of choking the drum. Thanks for the advice!

It sounds like you`ve been uing the Response 2`s on your SMX and they will deaden the sound of your drums. Get yourself a set of clear G2`s and use your stock resonant heads, they will be fine until they need to be changed. They will not choke your drums at all. They will brighten up and sing for you! An Evans EQ4 is an excellent choice for the bass drum too. In fact, you can buy a head pack with the EQ4, clear G2`s and a coated G2 for the snare. Give them a try you won`t be sorry. I used this set up on my SMX when I had it and it sounded great.
