Stave Build Question?

I've been thinking of making a stave shell and was going to go by these (http://www.pdgood.us/stave%20drum.pdf) plans and was wondering if the outside dimension ( 2.247") is accurate and if it is then should a cut the stave pieces first then cut the bevel.
Also what would a stave shell sound like if you used alternating wood like maple the another wood?? Can you recomend another wood to use if it would sound good
