View Full Version : New Color Ideas for Vision Series

I'll start by saying I love the Vision kits. I played another one today. The sound is remarkable. I was totally blown away by the kick drum! Top to bottom the Vision series rocks. However, I can't say there's one color that jumps out at me as a "must-have."
So now that the Vision series has taken off, and since talk of new colors is in the air (See this post (http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/showpost.php?p=1852166882&postcount=7)) I am curious what others are hoping for in the future for the Vision series. Maybe some ideas will make it back to Pearl Japan.
Personally I'd like to see a nice green sparkle.

I'd jump all over a light blue sparkle.
I would like to see the bass drum hoops finished inside and out, and some green colors like a fade or burst.

Yeah c'mon. For a long time fully finished hoops were once standard in the ELX series. Why is it not done anymore?

^Agreed! The whole kit looks kind of cheap when the hoops are left unfinished inside  !

I should have my Vision set in a few months and I've decided on the clear birch. Not only because I'm a big fan of clear finishes, but the bass drum hoops match...........inside and out.

AL!
Green sparkle green sparkle! i'll be all over that like a lampshade!!
Fades? yeah nice, but who doesn't offer a nice fade nowadays?
Sparkle fades? very nice, and ludwig does offer them, but the drums themselves are not up to par with the visions.
It doesn't even have to be a sparkle lacquer, just a wrap will do just fine!
Green sparkle is def a must have vision color. What other drum kits offer classic sparkles in this price range? you can get vintage nickel sparkle on the superstar and gun metal sparkle on the visions, but none of these are really classic sparkles in the same vein as green, blue and red sparkle are.
IF green is just no way gonna happen, i'd appreciate a nice read or blue sparkle.
With regards to lacquers, a nice burst like blue or green would be great. The visions already ownes with regards to shells, why not take the world by force like the ex/elx's did with amazing finishes?
Green sparkle Please gene!!!
Maybe some sparkle bursts like these.......

very nice!
i'd love to see a blue like that, wether it was sparkle or not (like the old sbx blue burst. I mean hey, its not being used anymore!)
but if they are going to do a green, it needs to be a straight solid sparkle, wrapped or laqcuer, it does not matter. as long as its solid, green and SPARKLY.

thanks AL.
I really hope too see some new finishes on all Pearl series, particularly the ECX which is pretty boring in that aspect. Frankly a lot of finishes aren't very eye catching anymore, not with brands like PDP, Gretsch, ddrum, and Mapex who all have really raised the bar for unique and near-custom color options. Stripes, sparkle bursts, and metallic fades have made their way into their lower end kits, but not Pearl.
Frankly I'm sick of seeing red fades, amber fades, and tobacco/antique fade finishes. Every brand offers them. Let's see something that hasn't been seen before. BTW thanks for getting the Shimmer of Oz color available for the RF, though I'll probably never afford to get it.

I wish I could take credit for the 198 Shimmer of Oz being added to the ref series, but it wasn't my idea. Although I really love the finish, and I'm glad they've added it to the Reference as a special edition.

Amber Fade / Black Hardware

will never happen. not after every one on the forum wined about it on the exports and they finally made us a plate for it. lets not push it guys!
I TOTALLY agree with iron cobra; stop asking for boring transparents, and fades! EVERYONE HAS THEM! look at the poor mapex pro-m; about 5 different fades that all look the same! tama has 2 fades that look too similar as well, but at least they balance it out with interesting wraps and such.
I would really rather have different, NEW colors as opposed to doing the whole black hardware thing again, especially since they would probably have to use existing/old export colors to do it! if you want bhw so bad, get an export, the lugs are far to nice on the visions to have them cluttered by powdercoated hardware so early on in their life.
AL: sparkles. sparkles. sparkles. wrapped or lacquer. and if pearl does do a green sparkle, they will officially own every other kit in this segment.
a/c: while i do like the flame finishes, i think doing some of those pearl finishes are too similar to what is already availble on the vsx. I want something new.

hmmm... i had a moment to think and i've come to the conclusion that a nice clear solid lacquer WOULD look cool...but it would be VERY dependant on the color.
while wine reds and walnuts look classy, pearl would need to step it up a notch; again a nice green in the same vein as tamas British racing green would look excellent, or a nice bright ruby red, and less of a dark crimson, would be cool also.
oh and did i mentiond a bright sparkle would look good? ;)

Yes they did make a plate.......but having that plate on top of the bass just takes away from the "look" of the kit. Have, for example, the cobalt fade kit, nice dark finish, to only have an eye sore chrome plate sitting on top of it. If they wont give that option, at least make the option to have this plate coloured to match the finish of the drums. that i would settle for.

oh don't get me wrong dude! i would totally love a virgin bass visions! But because offering the plate in different colors, or even having the ability to special order a bass drum like that is asking a bit much at this point, even the superstars didn't have a virgin bass until recenlty with the introduction of the hyperdrive lines. Again, i think it would be nice, but its a request for later on down the line, and for another thread! We should focus just on colors, and not what we 'wanted' out of the visions in general, as pearl gave us alot just with the introduction of a new kit!
I know this is going to be a counterproductive paragraph, especially considering what i just typed, but its with connection to your virgin bass question and the tama superstar: i think it would be great for pearl to offer a four piece kit. the reg. superstars come in this config, and its quite popular. In other markets (outside the u.s.) the superstar can be had in a 4 piece config with a 24 inch bass...and its virgin. Like i said the only way to get this otherwise is by getting a hyperdrive kit, but if pearl were to offer us a four piece kit w/ virgin bass that would be stunning. Heck even if it isn't virgin, a nice 4 piece visions would be great!

maybe an uber sparkly color would be '***' but if the color is a sparkle in itself, it NEEDS to have a lot of 'sparkle'. I guess you are referring to a normal lacquer that has some sparkle thrown in? Like the old galaxy finishes on the elx? while those would be nice, we are talking about full on sparkle finishes, like the gun metal sparkle that is currently available on the visions vsx, but just in different colors, like blue, green(:)), or red etc. If you think they are '***' then don't buy it, get a more generic color. (which this thread is currently trying to fight against.)

Im not saying sparkle finish's are bad, just theres a point where the sparkle is too much. I hate generic one tone colours on kits, I like the fades and the bursts myself.
Im not trying to argue with anyone or cause any trouble, just stating my opinion, which i have the right to do.
Sparkle finishs are good, yes, but like I said theres a point where too much sparkle is g**, or girly. I myself ordered the Mapex limited edition Blue Galaxy Sparkle Saturn kit, but the sparkle isnt as in your face as alot of the sparkle finish's I have seen. Its very suttle.

no one is hating on your opinion man, but just like you have a right to your opinion, you also have a right to accept that 'having too much sparkle is girly' is not fact, and should not be stated as such.
the point of this thread is steer pearl away from the usual boring fades, as nice as they may be. so the girlier the better. And even then this can be argued, as i strongly disagree with the opinion of something shiny or sparkly automatically means its feminine. i certainly wouldn't call black sparkle or blue sparkle girly, maybe a pink or magenta, but not the former. Have you seen the gun metal sparkle currently available? would you still consider that 'girly'?
Pearl: yes, please continue with a full on sparkle.

yeah, i probably would too! but the blue burst one he did a picture of reminded me of the blue burst that used to be on the sbx sessions; and i think that left in its natural (original) state, it would look great on the visions.
as cool as the sparkle burst finishes go, i think we would be better off pushing either bursts or sparkles but not both; pearl would have to balance out if those finishes could potentially be too costly to put on in this price range (ludwig has them on their accent series, but from a shell/hardware viewpoint thats were the cost cutting comes in) and they could end up with a series that has nicer/more interesting finishes than more expensive lines such as the mcx or ecx.

My argument for fade finishes. Generally I don't like any color that fades to black. Midnight Fade for example looks mostly all black from a distance. Cobalt Fade was the same way. Even those Blue Galaxy and Red Sparkle fades on Starclassic Performers lose me.
Then I saw hope in this photo from NAMM. (see below) Check out the red wood-hoop drum in the background. It fades, but to a darker red color instead of near-black. Then next to that you've got Sapphire Burst, which always has, and always will be one of my all time favorites. Blue and purple go together so nice. I've seen that color in real life on an older Masters kit. Mind blowing.
That's what I'm looking for. You can take any color and fade it to black, but even something like green/yellow fade can look marvelous if it's done right.
/\/\
I TOTALLY agree with iron cobra; stop asking for boring transparents, and fades! EVERYONE HAS THEM! look at the poor mapex pro-m; about 5 different fades that all look the same! tama has 2 fades that look too similar as well, but at least they balance it out with interesting wraps and such.

Agree and Agree. I noticed the Pro-M have those redundant colors too. But they took a chance with Bermuda and Platinum sparkle, and now Boston Pewter Fade. I would be more inclined to get those since nobody else does them. They stand out and it's makes those kits a little more special than Joe Smith's run of the mill Amber Cherry Scarlet Redwood Tobacco fade seen on so many kits.
I like black hardware on some drums, but chrome looks good no matter what the situation and like you said, the new lugs are too nice to hide with powdercoat. Plus if it's done poorly to keep cost low, it ends up looking like plastic. No thanks.
I think its a tricky equasion, a lot of the finishes people are asking for are basically master's finishes, and Pearl is not going to offer master's finishes on visions its that simple. so we need to think what can be done thats good, but wont stomp on the other lines that Pearl do.
I think a nice semi-transparent metalic would be great, along the lines of platnium mist, but obviously not the same as platnium mist.
sparkles are all the rage right now, pearl would clean up if the introduced a decent green.... like a green with hints of yellow (read gold) sparkle. Like "shimmer of oz" but without quite so much gold flake, and obviously the sparkle wouldn't be as deep as the ref version due to the "its only a semi-pro" fact.
Also if they did a champagne, no one does that in semi-pro.
I know for a fact Tama's efforts with the saturn flames on superstars kind of flopped (at least in Aus) so i'd stay away from them.
on the sparkle finishes especially, completely finished bass hoops make a massive difference, and really give the kit some class.
I think, although Pearl is somewhat conservative in the finishes, you can only go so far before you get into wacky "niche" finishes that limit the appeal of kits, I do think pearl needs a shake up with sizeing though.
I know its a finish thread.... but the writing is on the wall. People want short stack racks. 10x7 12x7 13x8. thats not true short stack but its whats popular. also offer the "fusion" floor toms (14 x 12 16x14) with legs.
Look at how amazingly fast the Tama hyperdrive kits sold. people ate them up..... If pearl released a "limited edition" run with a 22x18 10x7 12x7 14x12 (legs) 16x14 (legs) people would go ballistic I think, new finishes or not.
.. and maybe ever go so bold as to a deeper snare. 5.5 aint so deep anymore.... with all the 14x10's running around getting hype. a kick up to a 6.5 sensitone, would be cool.
I'm only saying this in here because there was the poss. of this thread getting forwarded onto marketing...

far to nice of a lug to be ruining so early on!
iron, those pics are amazing! that green fade is teh sex! i would hurt for a kit like that...i'd murder for a green sparkle wrap though. To me its never been a fad, as i've always liked them, regardless of what trends are.
but yes, those fades are brilliant, and if pearl can put something to a similar effect on the visions it would be fantastic. With regards to fades i do agree with you in that they are not bad at all if they do end up looking like this instead of being a generic cherry/caramel/tobacco color, or just fading to black.

tama's vintage nickel sparkle is kinda champagne looking.
and i agree with not wanting it to come off to wacky; the pdp kits that are supossed to be reminiscent of the weird color combos that some custom companies do are totally lame imo.
i don't want anything masters like, take the green fade on the old elx's for example! they could use that and fade it to a ligher green like in the pics ironcobra posted and it would be a wonderful solid choice. (i'd like it to be a brighter green obviously, as oppossed to a the slightly yellow/darker tone that it gets on the elx.)
besides, i think that what seperates the masters line from the visions is how the finish is applied; they are both done well, but the masters just has more steps. as long as pearl isn't using the same process for the visions finishes, it shouldn't step on the masters toes.
I guess the only problem then would be a masters player finding the color he wants in a visions but not on his own kits line. but i still think that there is a healthy middle point, and that pearl can balance it all out.

About configurations (Since it was brought up)
I've never understood why Pearl and so many other brands have held onto the hanging floor tom trend for so long. I've owned two kits, an ELX and a BRX, both with 11x14 hanging floor toms. I've had problems on both kits getting them to sound deep enough. I have trouble getting hanging toms into the perfect poisition during setup. They want to sag and bounce too much when you hit them. Plus how many pro endorsees do you see rocking just one hanging floor tom anymore? I'm going with floor toms on legs from here on out.
One of the main reasons I've been eye-balling Mapex Pro M and M-birch is because they offer configurations with TWO floor toms with legs. They also offer the 4 piece configs with 18x24 or 20x22 kicks. I'm not saying I have to have a 24" kick but at least its an option. These sizes are becoming more and more popular and it would really sway my vote back towards Pearl if I could get a pre-pack with two floor toms and not have to do a special order/6 month deal.
The Vision is a sweet kit at the moment but adding a few different configs with bigger and/or more drums would definetly make them a winner across the board.
Back to finishes. I just downloaded a trial of PhotoShop since my computer has nothing beyond HP Photo Smart for red eye and cropping. Tonight or maybe tomorrow morning I will have several concept colors that we can vote for.

i gotta question for ya too; how do you feel the visions stack up against the catalina birch? i know you are pretty fond of them, so i just wanted to know.
The Catalina Birch came with single ply tom heads which made them a little brighter and slightly louder than the Vision I've played. Also on the Catalina I remember getting lots of projection and attack without having to lay into the toms. On the Vision I had to play a little harder to get the same result. I'd like to hear a Vision with single ply heads to see if that's the reason or if it was something like ply thickness or bearing edges.
For both kits the bass heads are pre-muffled and both kits had a solid reso. I didn't use a pillow in the Catalina, it didn't need it. The Vision I played the other day had a small black pillow, but even at softer volumes it still projected nicely. Again I'd like to hear it without muffling to determine the maximum sound quality.
Hardware and finish wise the Vision wins hands down. I loved the look of the Catalina lugs, but the hoop claws, spurs, strainer, and leg brackets on the Vision are much more modern looking and that's not counting the molded rubber gaskets and brass tuning inserts.
The Catalina Birch was the best sounding kit I've ever owned. It really opened my eyes (or ears) to the potential sound and performance that lower priced kits can offer. But it was a shell pack. Luckily I could use the stands from my other kit. The 900 series stuff with the Vision series is great in itself, let alone it comes standard with every kit.
I'm working on those concept colors as we speak. I think I've got a couple good ideas but I'll wait to post them all at once. Probably won't be until tomorrow.

me likey a lot!
dude that first one is superb! exactly what i want the visions to look like...granted i understand that no other kit offers a classic sparkle color like this in this price range, but if pearl could do it, it would be incredible! thanks for taking the time to do it! the 2nd looks cool too!
I was looking into the catalina birch, thats why i asked about the kit; musicians friend had the fusion floor shell pack for like 500 bucks and they were selling an add on 16 floor tom for another 200. so it was tantalizing. But i think the visions will sound good enough to compete, and i don't have to worry about hardware except for a bass pedal(planning on getting a, you guess it, iron cobra ;))
thanks again for the pics man!

The green owns too ofcourse ;)

have they taught you at forks what the difference is between an onyx and a sparkle? because while you may not sell any of the onyx wraps, none of the ones ic posted are onyx...they are sparkle finishes...the solids most likely to be be made into a wrap and the bursts and fades lacquer finishes.

Here's the next batch. I messed around with browns and came up with a few I liked. The first color would match my Canopus snare very nicely. Canopus calls it "Ninja Black" The next is my version of Super Brown Fade, I think Tama use to do it. The next two are of a nice purple fade I'd like to see. The last is similar to Storm Cloud Fade but has more teal I think. What do you think?
Thanks again guys for keeping this thread going....I'll try to do some sparkle fades tonight.

more ideas.
1. Antique Sparkle Burst
2. Burnt Orange Sparkle
3. Green Sparkle
4. Orange Sparkle
5. Purple Sparkle - I love this one. Similar to Tama's UltraViolet Sparkle. I call it Heliotrope Sparkle
Those orange sparkle kits look amazing cobra! And the storm cloud with teal is a winner.... I'm attempting some feeble photoshops... I'll put em up later
Ok heres some attempts with my dodgey photoshop skills.... please excuse the sparkle bursts as I had to do the gradient myself and I'm new-ish to photshop.
on with the pics!!
first up the sparkles..
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/orangesparkle.jpg
I like this orange sparkle... its a nice shade IMO.. not too saturated..
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/Limegreensparkle.jpg
This one is what i call OMFGITSBRIGHTGREEN sparkle.. something a little different... not for everybody deffinately...
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/greensparkle.jpg
Your friendly neighborhood green sparkle... classic and hot.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/Greensparkleburst.jpg
The same green sparkle in a burst....pardon the burst I'm not that great with PS
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/Bluesparkleburst.jpg
And a nice deep blue sparkle burst.... I think rich blue's ftw!!
OK now we've got some fade's... I saved the best till last. I love these next three personally.. I'm pretty happy with them...
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/tealfade.jpg
Teal fade.. similar to Iron cobra's "storm cloud with teal"
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/chocbrownfade.jpg
Chocolate brown fade... i think its super super hot... do you?
And finally one badass looking green sparkle.. if they made these I'd buy 10
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/visionsgreen.jpg
thats all from me for now, sorry they're not the best quality! If anyone has a request.. shoot..

EDIT:
I noticed some guys wanted natural fades.. heres a few attempts...
first before the naturals.... a cheap diamond burst copy.... cliche'... but its nice..

Green to natural burst.. I kinda like it...
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j236/thenorrisfiles/visions/greennatburst.jpg
the same in blue.... the middle section has a more teal tinge though.. it was a quick colour replacement so my bad..

Mind blowing.
.
Nice... I'm partial to a bit of Sapphire burst, some may have noticed :D

Hey guys....

Anyway... Al... seeing as you liked the Aquamarine fade, I thought I'd do a couple takes on it, I like the name, the colour is very similar to Tama's old Aquamarine so it fits very well.... anyway heres a couple...
Your stock standard one

A little darker version.. I'm more partial to it.. but I think the fade effect would be lost over distance, so the brighter one is probably better...

Al why havn't we been hearing ANYTHING about summer namm? didn't anything new come out?
Nothing new (from Pearl) at summer NAMM. Since The Summer NAMM is coming back to NASHVILLE next summer (2008), maybe we'll play a bigger role in it. In the past, we plan most of our new products at the annual Winter NAMM in Anaheim, CA.

I'm really hoping to see some of the old ELX finishes on the kits, like Burgundy Mist, Amber Mist, Blue Mist, Green Fade, Cobalt Fade, etc.

Something like marina blue fade
The purple color from midnight fade, but just in a solid stain, no fade.
Maybe a midnight purple sparkle. YUMMY!!

nah. i don't. we need something new, fresh. not something tired and re-used.
and downright plain looking i might add. classy, yes, but still very plain.

I agree, fresh...but not so simple looking that it looks cheap and cheesy. I know this is a budget kit and all, but at least make it look expensive like the reference, masters, etc. For example, Gun Metal Sparkle and Clear Birch are hands down the 2 best finishes on the kit. They are classy, can be used in any setting, look expensive and are timeless....

As long as "fresh" doesn't mean vomit burst or toxic waste fade, I'm okay with that. :D I'm a big fan of the good old red stain finish in any kit, and the Amber Mist is just hot rod. :D

I've had lots of questions to ask but they are moot now.
I have a vision VSX blue strata so my questions now is
will I be able to order extra drum in this color next year or should I pickup the ones I don't have 8 16 and 18 now just to be sure I can get them in the same color?

You will be able to order them in the colour without extra charge regardless, but I don't think they'll be discontinuing the strata blue just yet.

Heh, well, now that you mention it, my fav color on ANY Pearl set would be the Purple Craze from the Reference series. When I get my Ref someday...that's the one to pick...oooh yeah!

The Clear Birch is a very classy finnish, I would like to see a cranberry laquer. What about a matte satin finnish? That would be killer
I'd love a green fade like this!

I love the look of the wood, and the green to black, I'm not sure about black hardware though, whether it would be look great or tacky.
Although I wouldn't demand too much :D I gotta say, if the visions had that, I'd go for it!!
(NAMM 08 should be about when I have enough money together for a Vision :) )

How about a "sparkle-fade"?
Definitely an emerald green sparkle fade. I would also Like to see some stripes, as is popular on the custom kits nowadays. Maybe like a Lime green laquer with an offset black stripe and black hardware. Kids would buy that.

Arctic White #109 on a new Vision kit would make my world complete. If I can't have that I'll have to settle for clear birch.
I was going to buiild a custom kit this winter but all this hype over what's gonna be new with the Vision series next year is making me put that project on hold to see what Pearl can come up with.

Personally I'd like to see a nice green sparkle.
hey...comparing the Vision set to your Masters set..how do you think it compares? Is the Vision even close to the Masters in terms of sound quality? And other things like that? Please Respond. THanks.
Genius Switch

If you're asking if there's a difference in sound...absolutely. One is 6 ply 100% birch with die cast hoops and single ply Remo heads. The other is 6 to 8 plys birch/basswood with flanged hoops and Pearl's 2 ply heads. But is the Vision lacking in terms of sound quality? I wouldn't say so.
I've played 2 Vision kits and the bass drums on both of them sounded HUGE! The toms had a nice amount of attack with plenty of bottom end. The snare was crisp and fit well with the rest of the kit. In other words, there wasn't anything in terms of sound that made me dislike them, especially considering the price. Plus you get some nice hardware to boot.
Does the Masters sound better? Not necessarily. It's all subjective really becuase you can make almost any drum sound nice given that it is made well and is fitted with quality heads. Being able to tune is also a big help. If you factor in things like the hoops or the mounting system then you're really starting to split hairs, because most people (by this I mean non-musicians) aren't going to be able to hear a kit and tell you what type of wood or mounting system it has. It really all comes down to drum size, room size, the bearing edges (they must be flat and true) heads, tuning, and in some case microphones and mix levels.
Finish wise, I will say there is a noticeable difference in the lacquers but only if you really look closely. The Masters uses something like 30 steps of sanding, staining, and lacquer to get the finish smooth and flawless. I believe the Vision uses a UV curing process similar to what the Exports have been using. It's cheaper, faster, and yeilds fairly similar results. When you look really close you can see a slight (very slight) ripple effect in the high gloss. This is also something that most people will never notice. Would it stop me from buying them? No.
Sorry if I went too in-depth but the bottom line is that the Vision is a great sounding kit and has lots of cool features that blurs the line between semi-pro and pro kits. I hope this helps.
P.S. New Vision colors are being released at Winter NAMM 2008 and should be in-stock around spring time.
