whats is the ply combination between birch and basswood on this kit? for the racks floors and bass drums?
I believe this is correct but somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.
6 Ply toms..............1/4/1 (birch/basswood/birch)
8 Ply floor toms and bass...........2/4/2 (birch/basswood/birch)

Hmmm...not as much birch as I thought.

Meh, I'd like the basswood to be the outer plies, and a 20-ply birch snare drum, I'd lose my hearing if I did a rim-shot on something like that!

That would be cool, but I doubt Pearl would be able to put a 20-ply birch snare on each Vision and still keep the cost around $900.

That is correct. and it is where the birch plies are which make up the sound. The birch ply are both on the most inner side and outer ply. The most inner side (where the sound source comes from) and the outside for birch veneer finish. The inside basswood is for strength and also provides the fantastic low end.
For those who have heard the Vision next to a SBX, its fairly difficult to hear the tonal differences. The Vision shell on the floors are thicker, so it has a bit more projection. Even with the stock protone heads it sounds great. With clear remo emperor's it sounds fantastic.
After playing a Vision at GC yesterday I can say it sounds great with the 2 ply Protone heads. I must like Birch!!!! They let me play for quite a while and I think I heard someone say;"doesn't he have a kit at home?" The sound was punchy and pleasing but when I got home I tightened my reso heads a few cranks and became estatic with the sound of my kit!!! I really love both of them and can't wait to try the ECX as well!!!! :D :D

any reason for this? to echo what all said, it seems to be where those plies are placed that makes up the overall sound. I agree with the concept of the reference series; the inner ply (the one that you can see from just peering through the drumhead) determines the sound the MOST, as thats where all the soundwaves are bouncing off of.
While i think the rims and mounting system of say, the tama superstar are superior than the visions, the shells themselves are much better on the visions for this reason. Tama uses the middle plys as birch and the outer and inner plys are basswood.

replace the optimounts first, if you change to thicker hoops, you'll need to find the iss thats made to work with the 2.3's; so it'd be a waste of money. Opti's are an upgrade that are not dependent on the hoops you have so i would suggest that first.

Surely this brings in to question the whole idea of the Reference and Masterworks lines.

Why?

yeah, thats what his post sounded like, but it seems he just meant that it is the same principle behind those kits as well.
