I couldn't help but notice that my new roommate brought home a Vision kit last week and the finish looks almost identical to my Reference in Twilight Fade. This might have been covered already, but is the finish called something different, or am I completely bonkers?

It's very similar, indeed. The Vision finish is called Black Fade.

after seeing these pics I was really excited to see Black Fade in person. My local shop has it. From a distance it's all-black. You have to get really close up to it to see the fade effect. It would look killer under stage lights. I've even thought of getting that color myself, and then getting the matching Twilight Fade RF snare drum.

Pics are from ebay, the last is another member's Reference kit for comparison.

geez, these pics look so similar! a visions with the white pearl head would look killer, as it does on that reference.

man the woodgrain on the visions is great.

no, black silk is different finish; it may be the same tone of black, but it does not fade, its a solid finish. and on the visions, its not called black silk, its called black fade. and i think you meant ecx, not mcx, unless you can get it on the mcx as well.

duh! ;)

No black silk comes on the MCX and ECX. Guess they are similar finishes. Thats my Ref in the pic above and ive seen the other Vision finish in person, they do look different.

Black Fade (231) is only available on the Visions
Black Silk (258) is available on the ECX Exports and the MCX Masters
Black Mist (122) and Piano Black (103) are only available on the Masters Premium
Twilight Fade (143) is only available on the Reference

LOL, someone at Pearl must like dark colors.

black silk looks like the lighter part of black fade.

The finishes are similar, although the Reference Twilight Fade has a more in-depth deeper richer looking hi-gloss lacquer finish in person. But yes, the Super Hi-gloss finishes on the Vision series took us all by surprise when we first saw them. Almost everyone at Pearl made a similar comment regarding the similarities between the VLX 231 Black Fade and the Reference #143 Twilight Fade. The #230 clear birch is another breath taking finish in person. Reminds me alot of the 80's Ludwig Super Classic natural finish, much lighter and more hi-gloss looking then most natural finishes.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I know that the entire Pearl staff is bonkers, and not just myself. :p

i much prefer the vision black fade to the mcx black silk, seen them both in person, and i, amd picking up my vision set in black fade in a couple of weeks, had the export for a few years and its time to go
