Hey,

I've been considering a VSX for a while, and I just have a couple questions about the shells, and the sound of them. First of all, do the 14x11 tom on the fusion kits have a 6 ply shell, or an 8 ply shell? Second, are the shells mainly birch, mainly basswood, or half and half? And finally, I noticed someone said that the snare was only a 1mm shell. Does it sound weak or ringy? How are the edges/beds?

Thanks for any help,

Andy

I've had the same question about the 14" tom. I think it's only 6 ply unfortunately, but I may be wrong. In terms of percentage, there's more basswood than birch, but it's the inner plys and outer plys that are birch which is what makes the overall tone qualities of the drum. I'm not sure about the snare thickness, but it's definately a good sounding snare. It's not "weak", and it may be a little ringier than maple (just for the fact of it being steel), but not much. And also remember that head choice and tuning is what makes the drum sound.

The rack toms consist of four plies of basswood sandwiched between two plies of birch. The floor toms and bass drums are four plies of basswood sandwiched between four plies of birch.

From What I Played(Which was a fusion kit and they were tuned low) the 14" tom sounded great, nice attack, medium decay, Not at all I expected to hear from a smaller drum. I can't wait to hear the 16" floor tom!

andy what everyone has posted is true!

with regards to the snare, although its only 1.0 mm thick, this is only .02mm less than the sensitone elite, and even al has commented on how close the two drums sound. (which just so happens to be very good.)

a steel drum is going to have some type of ring, it wont be as focused and warm as some other metals or woods for that matter, but amonst all the intermediate kits out there, this snare drum has them pretty beat. imo ofcourse.
