Well Im looking at a MMX kit, never had one before and Im coming from a BRX kit. 22x18 BRX vs 20x16 BRX, I like both for different reasons. the 20x16 is very punchy and quick and the 22x18 is big, deeper still rather punchy but seems much bigger, just moves more air. Does the MMX counterparts work the same way? 22x18 big deep sound and will a 20x16 be more punchy? Or does the smaller MMX kick drum do anything funny or funky compared to the more standard 22x18?

I just really confused myself on this thread, hope it makes sence to you reading it.

In a nutshell... yes! Go for the 22x18. It can do the "punchy and quick" sound with the right heads and tuning, but for that deeper, more thunderous sound, it has the extra room to get you there.

I dont think the deffence in wood will effect how a drum reacts, It does not matter if it birch are maple. A 20X16 bass drum will be quicker and have more puch then a 22X18 weathr its a maple or birch drum.

Thanks guy's!

Hey Shaggy (kickassDrummer) can you give me an example on a set of heads to make the 22x18 MMX punchy and as well the sound of Thunder?

Thanks, pretty sure Im going to get a new MMX kit now.

I agree that the 22x18 is the way to go. As KickassDrummer points out, you can make it punchy with the right tuning, but you can't make a 20x16 go "boom."

As far as heads go, I'm perfectly content with the stock, Pearl Masters logo Remo Powerstroke 3 heads that come on every MMX bass.

Superkick II with a Ported Regulator ressonant.

Or emad with emad ressonant would probably give a simela effect.

Use the factory heads and use the Remo 5" dynamo that comes with all Masters kick drums. Place it in the 4 o`clock position and cut out the port and have fun!! Also, be sure to use a Remo Falam slam or an Evans AF patch to protect your batter head.

Best kick drum is a 24" MRX

I am going to post against the grain; It boils down to personal preference, but I favor the 16x20. If I am miking for recording or in a really live room, I use the Evans Emad batter and Emad resonant. For outside gigs and rooms that are a little more tame, I use the Attack Medium with No Overtone Ring batter (Remo Powerstroke III) and solid logo head resonant. The latter had been my preference for many years, but the Evans has really impressed me.

To my ear, the 16x20 appears to have a more defined sound and not as mixed with bass guitar. I can also use it for low volume situations and amplified situations.
