Hows this thing stack up against a Pro-m in terms of sound quality?
Regardless of the obviously inferior bass-drum mounting on the Vision..
basically, Im thinking of buying a wrapped one for refinishing...its a hobby.
I was leaning toward a birch FS pdp for a re-finish, silver sparkle stars over natural, laquer.
But man, for the same price it seems I can get a lot more kit. and I like the lugs and hardware in general on the vision, although, Im sure they dont hold a candle to the Pro-M's superhoops.
so...hows this thing stack up, flashy finishes aside....is it really as good as it looks?

I don't think that's right... I'd choose the Pearl mounting system. Although the other clearly does have benefits.

Why, wouldn't you rather have a non-penetrating bass mount than a nice sized hole in your kick? Past that, I prefer mapex's tom mounts (Visision has ISS mounts right?), and mapex's 2.3mm hoops more than visions 1.6mm.

Is the mount suspended by the bass hardware? I am uncertain of the specifics (I was speaking in terms of operationally). But to answer your question, no... it doesnt bother me that the mount puts hole/s in the bass drum. Vision has ISS mounts, yes. I don't like ISS mounts at all... but I was referring to the tom arm system (which I presume the thread-starter was referring to as well). 2.3 hoops pwn 1.6 for sure. In reference to the actual tom mounting system, ie: the arms and the way they interface drums etc, I prefer Pearl...

i really like the pro m's; awesome finishes and its all maple. And i do think that the bass mount is nice; its removable and it doesn't have intercourse with the bass. But this is also a probelm that is easily remedied with the masking plate that pearl offers now.
2.3's are better than 1.6's and yes it is more convinient to NOT have to buy the masking plate if you want a virgin kit
but...
does anyone here realize how much a pro m is? They are pretty darn good kits for the money, but in now way are they 'cheap'. Plus, despite all the crazy configurations they offer, the only way you are going to get a 10,12, 16 tom set up is if you buy from mass music and get the free add on 10 incher....and thats if you accept the fact that your bass will be 24 inches wide. They just dont offer this set up, neither does m birch. For a guy who loves four pieces but wants a five piece and hates 13 inch toms, this is crucial.
I doubt everyones needs are as specific as mine, but that just goes to show that the visions can get alot done in a simpler manner.
if you bought a basic five piece visions you could probably still get 2.3 mm hoops and save money over the pro m. If you threw in optimounts it may be a different story, but i think even then its justified; the visions hardware is nicer than the mapex's in my opinion.
I think the fact that the visions is more comparable to the m-birch/superstar and is getting compared to the m-pro which was basically a competitior to the sessions, says a lot about what people think can be done with these drums.
