on the lugs: The Vision lug design is more agressive, yet its lines denote a certain refinement. I liken them to having a stance akin to a Dodge Charger or a character reminiscent of some of the current Dodge/Chrysler line work in 2006-2007 models.
...and if you think that is over-thinking it a bit, well, that's how much we think about this stuff....but in the end, its all worth it. ;)

So these are the first Pearl drums that are made in China. To be honest I'm not very excited about this new Vision-series drums.
Pearl's answer to Tama's Superstars?
And the ISS tom mounts should have been Optimounts instead.
Sorry, but I don't see the point in launching this new series of drums from Pearl.

They're the new Exports. Pearl can't just ignore that market. Optimounts would drive the price up, which isn't the point with the Vision series.

exactly. pearl had to move with the times. the export was severley lacking in several departments.

Vision = the new exports?
But the export series still exist; one version "below" the vision series and one version "above" (the maple ones)... it's weird and unclear to me.
I do like the red finish below the silver sparkle one though!

I could be wrong, but I assume the Vision uses different hardware since it is built in China while the Exports are still built in Taiwan. Due to those differences, maybe they felt it best to distinguish the two lines. For example, the Gretsch Catalina Birch is made in Taiwan and the Catalina Maple is built in China and they have nothing in common with each other and to have them named under the same series seems strange since they share no common parts.

The EX, EXR and ELX lines have been replaced with ECX, which replaces the Sessions. Seeing as the Exports have moved up the ladder, the Visions fill the spot left by the EX/EXR/ELX-series Exports.

Al,
Are you Peter Chris? Do you or have you filled in for Peter Chris? I hope you don't think I'm totally stupid; but when I look at your kits I see Peter Chris and the rest of Kiss. To me they represent a change in feelings from the early 70's (Peace) to "leave me alone or I'll kill you!" attitude. I was infatuated with the look which spoke vollumes of internal changes, so I bought an LP and I loved the sound.
00** I love the look of the vision in Strata white and am trying to decide on getting a standard EXR in Strata white, get the new Vision; Birch and Basswood plied for each drum; or just keep playing my Pearl Export Xmas kit of dark green, deep red, and strata white expansion pack. These colors go amazingly good with each other and they are alternated tastefully naturally. I keep looking and drooling for all strata white, but I have everything I could ever need allready. The band is happy with my xmas colors. They sound good. My brain goes buy buy!!!

I love that BRX and it changed the way I view wood grained drum kits. I want that one too!! I think I could charge it and sell my kit, and then I think that is many hours at the dread factory. Your kit is "pure Hottness" and I'm raving too, but I'm not a critic. I mostly enjoy.

this sensitone is made exclusively for the Vision series. It is not the standard Sensitone Elite STE1450 model. The Vision sensitone shell is a 1.0 beaded steel shell, the hardware is completely different. The lugs are the new TLS-55 Tube style lugs and the strainer and throw are different then the standard sensitone elite. I've played it, its a very nice full sounding snare with a wide tuning range and tonal clarity.

I'm still torn between these and some superstars...the visions pulls me in the sense that i think i like the finishes more, and the inner ply is birch, which suppossedly determines the quality of sound. (superstars, while made of birch, have inner and outer plies of basswood, the birch is in the middle.)
I like the superstars because i wont have the desire to change the hoops right off the bat.

exports have not really moved up, unless you are talking about the ecx, and even then, its just a shell pack, has limited hardware, older lugs and bass spurs and only the tom arms are really new. (well except for the shells.)
exports still exist in ex trim below the visions. Its safe to assume that the ecx has more uplevel shells, but the visions is a much better package and def a bigger step up than the exports of the past. (pre ecx.)

the exr and elx versions are. The regular (ex) exports are sticking around to cater to the market of drummers who need a good kit with a decent shell, but a low price. Then there is the export custom, which is basically an elx with a maple shell; almost a debadged sessions if you will. And they sport no new shell hardware, just better tom arms, and have no cymbal stands; they are offered only as shell packs.
Make sense?

I don't see what's so bad about "answering" the Superstar and other brands. What do you expect them to do, just let other brands make better deals and just sit there and do nothing?
Alot of people are upset about the Visions just because Pearl is staying with the market. I don't see just what the hell is wrong with that? In fact, I'd be upset if Pearl DIDN'T answer the Superstar, Sonor 2007, and other intermediate level kits.

I would like to see some newer version of the I.S.S. tom mounts. One that kind of "cradles" the drum without making contact with its shell and the drum hoops.
skywalker2
07-20-2007, 01:01 PM
it probably wouldn't be iss. most mounting systems touch the hoops in some way. the ones that don't usually hold on to the screws themselves.
if you want a pearl system that 'cradles' the drum, look to optimounts. otherwise, guagers rims would be a good bet. but they are not cheap and neither are optimounts.
there is a way to have 2.3's on the visions without chaning your mounting system type; there is an iss made for superhoops. its probably not worth it though, as you have to change you iss system to the one that takes 2.3's. For that, you might as well just slap optimounts on the visions right off the bat; and then change hoops later.

the wraps are bascially the old exr wraps ,the strata white, blue, red and black, and then gun metal sparkle, which i like a lot.
I wouldn't mind them switching out all the stratas except for white, and adding some more sparkles.
we need some more fades too; like a green fade and cobalt fade.

So once these new colours are introduced at NAMM 08, will we still be able to order the old colours? Like if we wanted to order a second bass drum or tom tom?

which finish is correct? the 2 pics of the red fade side by side look very different. the first looks like a dark wine or maroon-ish, while the second looks like a bright or blood red. so, which is correct?
The bright, blood red is closer than the deeper, dark wine. It's still not a dead-on pic, tho. I'm sure it's all with the lighting or maybe someone clicked on the "auto-adjust" in their picture software?

Hi all!
How much does a VLX series cost?
Hi- just wanted to answer this question with my personal experience.
I used my income tax return last Feb07 to drop $1300 down on an "a la carte" purchase of a 6-pc. set of ruby fade VLXs at a non-chain music store here in town. I really wanted the 24" bass drum (which thankfully has 10x2 lugs) and the 14" hanging TT. I spent far too much on my H-2000 ($199 at GC in Raliegh, I'm currently holding a grudge), $199 on my Chad Smith, and $99 on the S-2000.
Size Item Retail Price
24X18 Bass Drum $750 $445
16" Tom $330 $180
14" Tom $300 $175
12" Tom $230 $135
10" Tom $220 $115
14X6.5 Chad Smith $460 $215 (but I was charged $199)
$2290 $1265
S2000E Snare Stand $200 $99 (I bought this separately)
NO TAX INCLUDED
I am sensitive that I didn't get the best deal ever, however, I have been given free stuff, like an Emperor X snare head and a Rhythm Tech (pre-tensioned) active snare system, and GC gave me free Paiste cymbal cleaner, a 24" Remo muffl for $1, a free Gibralter double click pad, and 50% off an LP Rock Ridge Rider cowbell. They also have in their data system to sell me my DR-503C with 1 free CH-2000S cymbal boom arm, all for $300. I'm sorry if I failed to be a tight-wod, (please don't be mean to me), but hopefully this might paint a picture for those who wish to do the same, that is, NOT buy a typical shell pack. UGH!

(I know this is off the original topic, and for that, I am sorry for giving into the temptation to reply in front of everybody. Please forgive me!)
Aw man, let me tell you, I am just DYING to get some pictures up- but I have a few roadblocks- I need a camera (I want to buy a Sony DSC-W80), plus, I'm still saving up for the rack (including gyro tom arms, and the angling clamps, and at least 4 cymbal boom arms), and I want to upgrade all the rims to die cast, and the tension rods to stainless steel, the metal washers to black nylons, and of course, the I.S.S. mounts to the new aluminum Optimounts. That's $300ish for the rack, probably another, say, $450 for rack parts, $150 for the Optimounts, $70-80 for the SS tension rods, $12ish for the washers... The biggest part is done, now I have to get all these peripherals, which means I'm still looking at some $900-1000 to go! Bare with me...
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to vent/brag/talk about me. LMAO. I love all you guys, and trust me, I can't WAIT to show off my pride and joy!!!!!!
I suppose, though, I could give you a taste of what I got so far? I'll attach a pic or two- mind you, they're with my cheapie camera-phone.

Thanks, DeadSkin. Actually, there IS some method to my madness. I'm 54 years old and WAY past the point where I want to lug around a set to rehersals, then to gigs, and then back home. So I have an EXR at the rehersal house, the White Stratas stay at my house and the Reds stay in their cases waiting for the next gig. (sometimes a long wait!)
I WILL observe you're nuttier about cymbals than I am! lol nice spread!

I'll tell you why - With the right heads, PROPER tuning and good mic tecnique,
I'll put the visions up against drums twice as expensive (except for the snare,
upgraded to Brass Sensitone Elite w/ puresounds)
It's also a matter of practicality: As I said in another post, I'm 54 years old,
and long past the time when I'll tear down & haul & set up one set to rehearsals, then to gigs, then back home. I have a set for everything.
I don't mean to anger those of you who want to spend thousands on one kit.
How much difference you CAN hear, vs. how much difference you WANT to hear is a very relative thing. For me, an older, gigging musician since 1967,
I need good sound, good looks, and good flexibility. The Vision series give me all 3, in spades.

smart move, I am getting a Vision as my 3rd kit. my really nice maple custom kit never leaves the house, I have my 2nd kit at the rehearsal space and the 3rd kit which will be a Vision in Natural Birch will stay in cases for playing out. I may even get 2 Visions cause the price is right. You can NEVER have enough drum kits. I have 4 snare drums and I am not even close to done. Nice kits man, I hope they have some cool new laquer finishes for 2008. A cranbery laquer or a dark walnut laquer would be clasy as hell.

I am hoping they come out with a dark walnut laquer or a red mahogany laquer. Would be cool if they offered a matte satin option as well. One of my custom kits is a dark walnut satin stain. 6 Ply keller maple shells. This kit is so reaonant it isn't funny. If pearl plays their cards right they can own the market once again like they did with the old export series from back in the day. WHat I hope they don't do is have a bunch of cheesy wraps and black hardware that appeals to every 10 yr old punk drummer in the world. Keep it classy
I'm just hoping a for virgin bass drum option, and fully finished bass drum hoops. Look at the natural birch finish with the matching hoops and it's no contest as far as the best looking of all the offered laquer finishes.

^The BBC-1 masking plate already offers that option. I think it'll be unreasonable to ask Pearl to make virgin kicks since we already asked for the masking plate and they DID grant that wish. I'd say it'd be fair to ask for new kit configurations, ie Tama's Superstar HyperDrive.

Three things I want to say:
1. I just could not agree with you more, and BRAVO on the clear remark that "with the right heads, PROPER tuning and good mic tecnique..." one could get very comparable results to high-end drums
2. I *WAS* considering selling my old Premier APKs, but now... no way. I'm already quite sentimental about them, so now I am no longer on the fence about what to do. I plan on getting into a band when I move back home next year (I get out of the Army in OCT08), so I very much see the advantage to having more than one set now.
3. "How much difference you CAN hear, vs. how much difference you WANT to hear is a very relative thing." Yes, some call it "psychological comfort." I believe high end drums pay off the most in settings where the record company's well-paid producer/engineer is very scientifically inclined to capture the difference that it makes to have high-end drums. Otherwise, you are only pleasing yourself and others that merely like the idea. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. lol

Aw man, me too!! I would pay top dollar just to have fully finished hoops for my ruby fade VLXs, (or scarlet fade, IDK which is correct)s. The virgin bass drum option, I believe, exists, but I think waiting for 2yrs, 9mos, 13days to get it is too hard to bare. lol

Smacks right on the heads/tuning/miking.... I have heard the most low end kits sound unbelievable under mics with the right heads and tuning. I used to have a yamaha stage custom kit back in the day birch/falkata shells, and this thing sounded killer with remo poinstripes under mics. I am sure the visions will perform live, and if you are a bar band gigger/weekend warrier you don't need a top end kit to play out.

CUZ, I can tell you from experience that VSX sounds as good if not better than my former Starclassic EFX! Now of course sound is subjective but the guys in my band swear that my new kit is louder, has more projection, and is overall more annoying in a good way than my previous kit! I have also had the chance to hear it myself since I've had some local cats sit in so I could "get out Front" to hear the kit. I know I sound like a shill for Pearl but man I'm impressed with these drums!

Even with the stock 2-ply protone heads, the Vision kit is very punchy, phat and beefy with great attack right out of the box. With coated Remo Emperors or G2's the tonal clarity and warmth really come out. I think the Vision kick drum sound is amazing. They really are a great looking and sounding kit for the money.

CUZ, sorry I didn't get back sooner. I am currently using Ludwig Heads. Clear w/Silver Dot on my 10&12 rack toms with the stock resos, Clear, single ply heavy on my 14&16 floor. My 14 is mounted. I am using a clear Evans EMAD with an EQ3 smooth with reso with a 5" hole. I have a 5.5x14 SBX Series snare with an Evans Power Cntr. Dot on Top coated head with 4 small, drilled holes in it for extra dryness. The kit as a whole is lethal! I went with a wrap because my band plays high-energy stuff and there is alot of "crowd participation" with us. I couldn't deal with a laquer kit getting all nicked up and beer damaged. My SMX is my trophy kit,she stays indoors and is well protected. But if you're looking at a Visions, they are the "REAL DEAL!"

Grover make a killer kit but I will be out over 2 grand and the reason for this kit is so I have a kit I can leave places and not worry. You say they (visions) sound good live? How is the workmanship? Are the bearing edges well done? After going handmade usa custom it's hard to buy off the rack again with confidence. years ago I had a Maple Pacific MX, biggest piece of junk I have ever seen.... Oh yeah, in my opinion they sound great. Especially when you know how to tune correctly. Some things you probably need to change like the pedal and Bass Drum Heads. The stock heads are okay thanks to Pearl, but replacing them is next on my list as well as hoops/optimounts (possibly... opinions please) and I have an order for the Joey C. Kit from LP which should add some pop to the sounds of my set. In the end, because of the great price compared to the sound, I would say to anyone in doubt, this is one of the stronger (possibly strongest) semi-pro sets. Having heard this and a Tama Superstar directly next to a Vision, I can say that a Vision is the victor. As for the other kits I have heard them, but don't know enought to compare.

I finally bought a digital camera and figured out how to resize them so that I
could post them!!!!
I have a few excuses, however:
1. My February-ordered Reference-style Opti-Mounts were supposed to have
arrived last week, but have been pushed back to JUNE.
   :(
2. These stock heads are not my first choice heads, so I am trying to work
with them until I can afford others. I am leaning towards Evans G2 clears or
the Aquarian Response II's. I want a Super Kick II for the bass drum or the
Evans EMAD 2. Yes, instead, I am using a much cheaper route: 2 Remo
Muff'ls.
3. Yes, I know my blue Paiste 2000 hi-hats and ride are ugly, dirty and old.
Even though they still sound great after 22 years, I do want to get
shinier and newer Paiste Signatures or 2002's- that way I can use the older
ones on my Premier's. Likewise I want to add a splash and a china!!!
4. Yes, my dw5000's are single-chain and old, but they work just the same.
And again, I would love to get some Elims with the red sprocket. Maybe the
dw9000's. It's all just money away.
My drumset is not fully tweaked. This is my very first rack, so I am riding the
fence on how to position and arrange things exactly to the way I need it.
As it stands, my ride is a bit too far of a reach for me to easily use the
bell, and my 14" is just barely above my 24". It's a puzzle on how to get
it higher at the angle I like and need. Me thinks the tom arm is too short and
may trade out the TH-2000S for the longer one and hacksaw it to length for
better visual appeal.
I can't wait to get your comments!!!!!!
P.S. I have a few more pictures on the way...

I don't mind helping you out by answering your question. However, it means I
have to reveal some unfavorable things about myself.
I realize now, that with all I've done to build my drumset, I could have used
that money to buy a nicer one, like an all-maple shell kit. What I own now has
simply been dictated by financial compromises.
Also, it reveals that I am not all that frugal. However, it should show that I
have done what I meant to do, which was to get the configuration and
hardware I've been drooling about since at least 2005, no matter the cost.
Because I refused to get a pre-packaged kit, like the "fusion" sizes or
"traditional" sizes, I was forced to custom order what I wanted, via "a la
carte." I had to order each drum one-by-one. See my signature, below right,
to see my dimensions.
For shells only, including my Chad Smith snare, I paid:
$1265.00
For the DR-503C 3-sided rack:
$295.84 (came with 4 clamps and 2 post clamps)
Drum set and rack accessories/upgrades:
$1119.00 (this is for die cast hoops x8, stainless steel tension rods with nylon
washers and extra brass receptors x60 (they do not fit into the VLX bass
drum factory brass receptors or completely through the claws), locking nuts
x100, bass drum masking plate, Opti-Mounts x3, gyro cymbal boom arms x4,
gyro tom arms x3, angled clamps x3)
Hardware:
$199.99 H-2000 Eliminator hi-hat stand
$142.00 DW Air Lift pneumatic 4-legged round top drum throne
$106.70 Pearl S-2000C snare stand
Accessories:
$34.95 cyclops tamb and Pearl PPS-91
$17.60 Pearl CA-100 cowbell holder
$25.50 LP Ridge Rider cowbell
This list does NOT include a Paiste cymbal purchase, Humes & Berg Enduro
Pro Lined cases, Sennheiser E604 x4 mics, Sound Off bass drum, tom and
hi-hat mutes, new stick bag, Remo Ebony resonant heads, a Tama cobra
beater (not in the pics), bass drum 6" HOLZ, or FREE stuff, like Remo 14"
Studio X snare head, Rhythm Tech active snare strainer, Moon gels, cymbal
cleaner, Gibraltor bass head double click pad. Nor does it reflect items I
already have, like my other cymbals, my dw5000 double pedal, a double pedal
carrying bag, my LP synthetic wood block (red) or my Ahead Tommy Lee
sticks and tuning keys.
TOTAL:
I know it's somewhere around $3500.00.
I consider my drumset to be quite unique because of Style, Standard and
Stupidity, lol.
Despite my embarrassment, I hope this helps. I hope it guides you to get
what you really want! My only advice is to look at the big picture first, what
do you really want? This will help you avoid the mistake of compromising too
much. Get that extra job and keep saving, saving, saving!!!! You will live to

Rob, Rep of the Highest Brother! An extremely fine job on the kit. This is the first time I've seen it and I have done alot of the same things to my VBX. I also have cast hoops on all my drums + Optis. I like those locking nuts you have, I've never seen those before, and the Reference style Opti you are referring to, Alum. or Chrome?

To the best of my knowledge, they will be chrome, light-weight aluminum. They are what is used for the Reference series! Just a couple more weeks and I should have them!!! (I can't believe I have had to wait even this long for the order!)

Rob, it was actually a 14x14" w/legs! I removed the brackets and filled the holes with black screws so it would be "invisible." The base kit I ordered was the 1 up 2 down configuration and I ordered the 10" tom extra. I got the black tubing from some old Roland gear back in the day when when I managed a Drum Dept. for a local music store. I figured it would give the rack a "floating" look on stage in the dark clubs. It kinda works, not to mention I really haven't seen anyone else use a rack like it.

Actually, I bought it as a practice kit until the new Cran. Fade BRP arrives sometime in October. But, now that I`ve listened to how good this kit sounds I`ll probably keep it. I wasn`t expecting it to sound this good, really! I have already been thinking about Opti`s and SuperHoops as something down the road to add on. I`m still paying for the BRP. Thanks for the review of the toms with the upgrades, that`s just what I wanted to hear! :D

You bet, I'll go even further. I have the Opti's with MasterCast Hoops on the VBX. I had 2.3's on the VBX before I swapped them out. TBH, I think the kit sounds fuller and fatter with the 2.3's.

Wow bsinbs,
That is one wild set-up! Look at how you have your snare stand BEHIND your
double bass drum linkage! Look at how far apart your tom-toms are! Look at the
cluster of cymbals near your floor tom! And your bass drum being so close to
you is probably what dictates the whole arrangement!
Please say a few words about how you arrived at such unique set-up! Might it
have anything to do with how tall you are, I wonder!

I don't know how or why I play them this way.
Ever since I was 7, I had them set up like this.
Now I'm 22 and still have them this way.
It is bizarre, I admit but if it aint broke then I don't fix it.lol.
and yes I do love these drums.

So I bought the RB blue Vision drums online recently and I was very disappointed. The real thing is nothing like the picture on the Pearl website. It is completely purple. I gotta tell ya, that black on black is wicked. Have you thought about using black resonant heads for effect?
Also, your TT angles are the most dramatic I have ever seen!

Here's mine, gun metal sparkle. Still waiting on a 16" floor tom.

The table which holds the laptop is from Ikea. It was around $25 and really convenient to hold sheet music or the laptop for DVD lessons.
Wish List:
16" floor tom (Ordered)
Another crash cymbal (Trying to decide which one)
Splash cymbal
Arm to convert straight stand for ride to boom stand
All my stuff was purchased from Massmusic.net and I have been happy with them.

Santa brought me a 16" floor tom. Very happy with that. Now I am just playing around with the set up. So many options. I can't decide whether I want the 14" stand mounted tom at the same level as the floor tom. I am open to suggestions from folks. I am a beginning player.

I just didn't want to buy a junk set and then want to change it 1 year later. My wife is cool and let me listen to the advice from a drummer friend to get a nice kit. Better resale to if I give up on the whole drumming thing. Probably not going to happen though. I still have my first electric guitar from when I was 13 (40 now). I lowered the 14" Tom. I could go a little lower but would have to pull it away from the bass drum. I am trying to keep the kit as tight as possible since I am not very good.
Thanks for the advice.

It still looks a little high in this pic but that is just the camera angle. You can see how close the 14" Tom is to the rest of the kit. Thanks to MassMusic.net for finding the 16" Tom in my color.
Wish List:
Another Crash Cymbal - Probably 14"
Cow Bell with bass drum mount
Learn how to play! Ha Ha

Just got mine today :D Glacier white. Way excited seeing as how this is the first set I've bought. Just didn't have time to tune them yet.
*Sorry bout the picture quality, used my phone... was too excited to dig for a decent digital camera*
What it used to look like. Just got the rack a week ago and had to special order the drums so I set up my teacher's old set that I've had for a while to practice while they arrived.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Jonas104/0204091848.jpg
After picking them up from GC along with a new pedal and some extra hardware (sorry dunno if GC is taboo around here, but I did get the DR503C for $90 :D)
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Jonas104/0206091702.jpg
And finally set up... sweeeeeeeeeet
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Jonas104/0206091848.jpg
I took alot more pictures of the packaging and what not but wanted to save you guys the loading time and what not :)
Now I just need to save up some money for some real cymbals... dunno if I should hold out till I can afford the A Custom series or get some decent Sabian cybmals... any suggestions?

heres my new vision I got a few months ago, I have yet to get the rack or cymbals yet, it was only the shell pack. But thankfully I paid only $500 for this kit!!!!!! it was $100 off the already disounted price of $600! So I basically stole this kit. Haven't been able to play it, but I love it!

I'm not sure what model this kit is? the tag on the shells say the SST, but I thought it was the VSX? anyways, figured yall could help me out, still doing my homework on the Visions, although I'm an owner of one haha

I would have to full heartedly request you get the A Custom, they're the only cymbals I'll touch, thats why my drumset isnt complete because I don't wanna get the second grade stuff on this one, A Custom is by far the best cymbals I've ever played. If you want a good china crash, thats really grungy, try out the Wuhan on musiciansfriend.com, they're $20 for the 18"! Its ridiculous!

SST just stands for superior shell technology, which relates to how the drums are made. I think all the Pearl drums say that now

You cant go wrong with the VMX they really sound awsome, but like i said the mounting systems aren't too good they affect the projection a little bit the optimounts don't cost too much and are deffinitly a major improvement on the kit. just something you might wanna think about.
