It will be interestiong to read the posts about the new Visions. It will be interesting to see the first post from the person who actually has either set and has had an opportunity of playing one of them and posting the pros and cons.

I would like to note to the current moderators that Big King is showing anger and derision through the quote in his last post. This is most certainly not one of the qualities a moderator should possess.

You also might want to consider the quote in his signature. It an account from fellow forum member Symbolic describing Big King's ignorance toward what was likely an innocent, most likely funny, post. Again, behavior that would be unacceptable from a moderator.

Your post, and Symbolics post are fine examples of people taking themselves, and their time on the internet, a little to seriously. If you and him are unable to detect sarcasm, that is not something I can help you with. I will also remind you and symbolic, that I have never personally attacked a fellow member, or insulted anyone directly by name.

Symbolic and other members have yet to extend me the same courtesy.

ok... can someone please explain one thing to me please? Where does the vision line fit in with the rest of the lines? Is it better than an export? better than a sessions? Sorry to be a bum but I haven't been on in a while and I left when there was a lot of speculation as to the new products... but now i'm confused? And can somebody please explain what has changed in the lines please? I looked on the pearl site and it didn't say how the new line changes the whole heirarchy...

Loz,

I believe it goes from bottom to top...
Forum
EX Exports
Visions
ECX
MCX
All other masters lines
Reference
Masterworks

Sessions, alas, are no more. ECX is 100% maple and MCX are the in-stock, non-sepcial order Masters kits.

So think of MCX as a Masters quality kit at a Sessions price, and ECX as a Sessions quality kit at an Export price. Best way I guess I can generalize it! :D
Hope it helps!

thanks abugazi... so whats the difference between the ECX and the MCX. is the ECX something like not as good qauilty maple or something?
Thanks,

Actually think of it as MCX is Masters Premium quality at Session price point and ECX is Session quality at Export price point. :)

The maple quality is the same.

So if I wanted to upgrade my export... which one would be a big enough transistion to make it worth it?Or does it matter as the quailty is the same?
Thanks, loz

I think you would want to upgrade to something quite a bit better, either ECX or MCX or just go all-out and get Reference or Masters Premium. What's the point in wasting money on another mid-range set that you'll just want to replace eventually?
Besides, you deserve the best

What is the material that the Visions are made of, and what sizes of each drum (to be broken down by size of snare/tom(s)/bass drum(s) are currently available? Another question, does Pearl still make cymbals, and if so, have they changed since they early 1990's in sound that much? Someone that I went to high school with had a 5 piece Pearl Drumset with a 4 Pearl cymbals, and the cymbals sounded almost like metal that was covered in plastic to a majority of people, but the drummer, well, she loved 'em!

BTW, the person says speach, not speech, and speach is underlined. Tell me I'm not the only person to catch it, and if so, I'm the only one to actually post it in my reply.

I wouldn't think that a upgrade from an export to a visions is a waste...not as big of an upgrade as a mcx, but still no waste of money.

Personally, i don't think that an ecx is really that huge of a leap over the visions; maybe when you take the shells into consideration ONLY; yes they are better, maple vs bass/birchwood. But in a world were people refrained from buying sessions because they could make their exports sound so darn good, imagine what we can do with visions.

Plus many of the perks that involved getting a session are non-existant on the ecx, such as: cool finishes, optimounts, superhoops, masters styled bass spurs. The visions at least has better bass spurs that look pretty damn good, and although they are devoid of optis or superhoops, they have air suspension feet and brand new lugs with brass inserts. Suddenly the fact that ecx is maple is the only thing really going for it!

Ok; I just got back from Guitar Center and they had a Gun Metal Sparkle fusion kit with well tuned protone heads and it sounded incredible!! They had it at $699.99, the same price I paid for the standard part of my EXR!!! I was too impressed but I need to consider the accoustics were much better than in my jam room, and they had Led Zepplin featuring John Bonham in the background. I love my EXR and I really wanted it; but the Vision far surpassed my expectations!!! This is with Protone heads!!!! :D :D
WhenI get my new truck payed off I'm going to have to play a BRX somewhere because I must really like the sound of Birch!!!
It is Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!! ;)

Got the VLX GunMetal Sparkle. Can't say the Birch/Basswood is not a great combination. I love it. I got this before I knew the ranking order. Hardware and finish is incredible. The covering is not as tight to the shell as I would like. BUT THE SOUND........I just love them.
I also have an early 80's MLX. Same config but w a 24" kick. Switched to EC2's on the MLX (still bright). So this new kit sounds sooooo much warmer. But has nice punch and full tone. I'm using G2's+ factory resonators on all the toms: 10",12",14"(replaced ISS w OptiMounts). and 16",18" floors. Then on the kick, I've always used EMads on the 24" MLX but on this kit it didn't work. So, I switched to a SuperKick II. No muffling, nothing inside the kick that touches the heads. I have a small piece of foam 10"x10"x1/2" to lay my Beta 52 on during shows. The engineer in the studio couldn't believe there was no muffling, (check the recording on the myspace link, not great engineering or playing on my part but....). This baby is huge in the PA. The whole kit cuts through. I tune a little tight and one piece of moon gel all the way to the edge, 2 each on the floors. (did you know you can use those Halloween window sticks-ons! instead? skulls and ghosts). Still has the factory logo resonator with a 5" Holz.
This kit is so much easier to mic and control in night clubs as well as recording!
Looked at Sessions, Masters and Reference(hard to hear what these sound like in a music store for all that money) So I got VLX and had money left. Upgraded the rest of my cymbals to Paiste.
Going to have to resize some pics and post.

I love the new vision series now an ideal setup would be thin 4 ply with maple shell and. Although birch is also pretty nice but still maple 4 ply would be pretty sweet.

id like to add a 10" mounted tom , 14" floor tom, and a 18" floor tom cuz i cant find any of those in export or forum series -_-

07-25-2008, 10:38 AM
Well, there's nothing wrong with adding those Vision drums to your Forum kit. I know it would be ideal if you could upgrade to a full Vision's kit, but sometimes that's not an option because of money and availability.
From age 12 to age 18 I played a mixed set until I could afford a full set of Exports (1987, 8 piece set).

It might be a little tricky getting the Forum floor tom to fit in between the Vision toms, but with a little tuning I'm sure it will be fine. I think they use the same shells. I know that all Pearl Drums use the same forming process, so the only difference would be the plys and the wood. You won't have to worry about the shell workmanship.

On my original kit I had three different brands of toms on my set. With tuning they all blended in nicely. Well, uniformly I should say.

I am new to this forum.Thank you for the welcome.I heard about this .Pearl's new VLX Vision line of drums are on the leading edge of today's drum technology. Following the precedent set by the popular high-end Reference series drums, Pearl has put the very same sonic research into practice at a more price-conscious level. Is it?

10-21-2008, 12:18 PM
Yes, I'm looking at the VMX - all maple - and am interested in hearing from someone who has played on a kit. I guess they compare to the Sonor 3007, PDP MX /CX, Yamaha Tour Custom etc. Would like to hear someone's unbiased opinion before I commit to buying one. How does the VMx sound compared to the VBX/VLX?
