What's your point? Lots of people use moongel to get rid of unwanted overtones. Same as using EC2s or CS batters and many other heads with built in damping. Moongel just gives me more control because I can use as much or as little as I want. This is NOT true of the other heads I mention. With built in damping, you get what you get with no control.

At this point in my drumming life I beleive that with proper tuning you can get your desired sound. Dampaning should not be used on drums like the reference. Let the drums speak even tho they may studder a bit, Its natural.

The 10" Amb is still holding on for dear life - it has a few small pits in it. I'll probably end up changing them after one more gig.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. I don't know if you own a set of reference or not but these drums have incredible resonance and some sick overtones. Taking out some of these overtones is not WRONG if you don't like them. If you like them, that's fine too.
The fact is, head choice is HUGE. I have said before that head choice is WAY more important than what wood you have in your drums. Tuning also ranks up there. You say one can tune his/her drums to get the desired sound. That is partially true. You can tune them to get a desired TONE but overtones can only be tuned out by sacrificing tone. I tune for the tone I want then work on the overtones via some other method including head choice and damping.

I have to admit veg that I left the stock heads on for a while including my first gig with the kit. I then went to clear ambs and the drums still sounded a bit thin. Then, after repeated berating by wood I switched to the G2s and absolutely fell in love with the drums.
I'm betting you will too.

Hey JPC may I suggest switching to Coated Evans that'll get rid of the overtones you speak of without choking it so much it changes the overall statistics your getting now without the moongel, so I guess what I'm saying is if you switched to the coateds you would have this Evans Coated > (or equal to) Clear Evans with Moongels. I think you were the one I refered Coated Evans to in my threads...

Very cool thread!!
Last week I had a small gig where it wouldn't be suitable to use my whole kit, so I took half of it with me. I like the way it looks!! Maybe I'll use this setup more. But there's nothing like my big kit :D
Don't look at my twin pedal!! It's very very old, but it works fine. I don't want to buy an Eliminator, because rarely use a twin pedal...

I finally had a chance to see a crystal rain kit the other day at Explorers Drum Shop here in KC. It is a nice finish, but the granite sparkle, scarlet fade, and purple craze are still my 3 favorite reference finishes.
I am fairly new to posting on the forum, but I will try to take some photos of my Granite Sparkle Reference Series kit and post them this weekend.

The sizes were: 10x8, 12x9, 14x14 and 20x16 kick.
Really it was a very nice kit but I had some "Opti-rash" on two of the toms and a few other issues. So, I returned it but it's all good. In the end the Refs just weren't for me. That's all.

You know, I actually recorded my Refs (for a couple of minutes) several months ago, but the file ended up being so big, it wouldn't fit on this site. I also only had a dial-up connection at the time, so THAT didn't help the uploading process either!
I actually just got DSL two days ago and will put a new clip together. Right now, my Tamas are set up in my basement (and miced), so I might as well record those too. My Tama bass drum has the exact same setup anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter which set I use for a bass drum head sound sample.

I'm currently looking for a complete set.Is what you say, about your use of moongel pieces, means that you had to moongel all the rack tom lines, cuz tones where to much present on all the toms line?????If yes,it's seems curious to me, as all i heard about the ref's character, is his nice little dry cut attack, and a bit choked bottom...(exactly what i'm looking for),but on the notes, yet singing.Isn't it ???...an answer please JPCdrummer??

I'm not sure what exactly you are asking. Yes, I use moongel on all my drums. However, the great thing about the product is you can use more or less depending on what you are trying to accomplish and the characteristics of each individual drum. This is superior in my mind to a drumhead with built in damping. With the Evans EC2 for instance, you get what you get and there is no changing it. That is why I prefer moongel.

JPCDRUMMER, My question was more toward the REF's natural(own)character compared to,let's say, my D.W...Mine is a thin shell-resonnating character(to much tuning+f****** lugs).I tought the REF's own natural character was more toward a good tuned-balance between tones and choke, occured by the thick wood-mix...(exactly the sound i'm looking for).ISN'T IT???....SO, why use of moongel on REF'S series drums??they are supposed to be ¨¨unwanted overtones¨¨ free, whit no tuning issues, even the 12...isn't it???Marketing??I will never understand why i should pay so much$$ for a hi-end, top line drumset, and end up muffling it cuz i can't get ridd of unwanted overtones!!...

I think you are missing the point of Reference. ALL drums have overtones that some people like and some don't. mrpaiste will tell you that many of these overtones are near-field meaning that from more than 15 feet away they won't be heard anyway. So the Moongel is probably more for my ears than anybody elses.
But I digress...
The point of Reference is to create a unique and specific sound for each size drum such that together they form a more balanced sound that a single wood kit cannot achieve. There is nothing about getting rid of overtones in the mission statement as far as I know. Great sound is in the ear of the beholder. I've been saying that on these boards for years now. What sounds good to you may not sound good to me. There have been folks that have owned Reference kits and sold them because they didn't like the sound. I have no problem with that. Reference, and any other kit for that matter, is not for everybody.
Try before you buy if you are concerned.

My feeling on double bass drums is this: If you plan on gigging with your set, double basses is a pain in the back. If the kit is to stay put (studio or home) then double kick is cool. I just wouldn't want to move the things.
The kit is looking very sweet these days bro.

I don't have a lot of experience with double basss drums but I doubt the tuning thing is that big an issue. I can make two drums sound the same.

At this point in my drumming life I beleive that with proper tuning you can get your desired sound. Dampaning should not be used on drums like the reference. Let the drums speak even tho they may studder a bit, Its natural.

Hmmm. Dampening is a good thing at times. As a player and a FOH Engineer, you need dampening for overtones when micing drums. Escpecially the low toms. Not doing so is a sound nightmare. I personally like moon gel. It's good stuff for the reasons JCP Mentioned. I personally like gaff tape so I can just cut off a piece. It's lightweight. The coated amabassadors that come on the kit are the worst sounding garbage on this kit. UNLESS you're playing some jazz. They have no punch or depth. I digress.... the use of dampening is crucial to good sound if you play live or do any recording with anyone that knows how to mix. Now if you're just gonna play in your garage or living room then balls to the wall man.

Seriously, there are time when I think, what the hell am I doing with these drums?
Hey! Givemethebeat, I was pretty down when I wrote that about to go in for my 2nd hip surgery, and finally now I am out of these braces on my wrists. It has worked to my favor, I played with Army entertainment for some years a long time ago, and I had a lot of stuff that I pretty much gave away. I am not going to say that I was anything special but I could keep a beat. Well I had the money thanks to my Dad and the VA, to buy a Reference kit but I decided against them, It was not worth having an awesome set like that, for me being in my condition, and their was a kit at the music shop, a 6 piece in Purple Craze just like I wanted, but this guy walked in and said he had been saving for a year for this kit, and today was the day, he was taking them home! So I told him I had come in to buy them also, but I felt he needed them worse, we have been friends ever since and I now have a 6 piece MMX in Diamond Burst with Black Hardware, and could not be more happy. I was told once from an ex-guitar player that your only as good as your kit! Little does he now he played a 3000 dollar PRS, and he sucked! Wheres the logic?

I decided to clean my drum room up and in the process, thought, what the heck, let's hang every cymbal I can on the kit. So, although some are dusty, I've got four splashes, four crashes, two chinas, a ride, and a zbell. As you can see, I ran out of methods to hang them before I ran out of cymbals.
Also, I know I'll get questions about why my 12" Ref tom is missing and replaced with my 12" BRX tom. I am waiting on a warranty replacement which I hope will come soon.
And no, I'm not going to drag all these cymbals and arms to a gig. But it is fun to play.

Thanks CALI. The 12" tom experienced a little ply separation at the bottom bearing edge. Just one of those freaky, VERY unusual things. Interestingly enough, it was a FANTASTIC sounding tom and my "go-to" tom on the kit. Pained me to part with it but I was worried about the long term integrity of the shell. Initially I was worried about this sort of thing where different wood types met. However, obviously this is on an all maple shell so it has absolutely NOTHING to do with Reference. I take some solace in that.

School's aright. Lots of work, hardly any drumming cause I can't have my set here. I gotta find a good electronic set for cheap.
And yeah, I've realized how hard it is to find truly all-around good musicians

What a great story, and the universe did provide!!! MMX kits are high end kits too....... Hope your hip and everything causes a least amount of time off your drums as possible.... 5 stars to you....

This setup isn't final, I just threw it together. I will have some sweet shots of the new setup this weekend... I know it doesn't have to be said, but the Reference series is amazing. My favorites currently are the Bass & the 16" Floor, they just pound!

Me too. Still have the original Remo coated Ambassador heads on my Ref along with a spot or two of moon gel. First off, I don't think the Remo coated Ambassador heads are "crap heads". If Pearl wanted to install (original) "crap heads", your Ref's would have come through with ProTones on them. Secondly, everyone has their (respective) opinion or thoughts on what is the best head. I used to have Evans G2's (clear) on my old Ludwig. I was happy enough with them, there. But when my Ref's came loaded with coated heads, I chose to stay with those for a while. Another guy I talk too sometimes (by the way, he had a Ref in Root Beer Fade, saw my Purple Craze and immediately sold his Root Beer Fade & bought a Purple Craze) who insists on, not the Ambassadors that come on Ref kits but rather, Remo Emperors, coated. I thought I'd go with the orginal Ambassadors for now and then try something else. (I always thought about trying the Evans EC2's too). But on my old Ludwig kit, I had/tried G2's, Aquarian Performance 2's, Attack (Terry Bozzio) clear heads. I think I had Aquarian Studio X coated heads too (which I liked better than the Performance 2 heads). The point is, it's up to each/respective/individual drummer what he does or doesn't care for in heads.
As for moon gel, remember that almost all drums used to use some kind of muffling, although mostly internal. Moon Gel is great stuff. Like it? Slap it on there. Not quite right? Move it a little. Too much mufflling, hey look at that ... the stuff comes right off entirely!! Ya like Moon Gel and use it BUT, are afraid someone on the Forum's gonna break your walnuts over it, take it off for the new pics, put it back on when they're not looking. Right? Hey, remember tape? Tape all over drum heads? Everywhere you look, tape. Ahh, Moon Gel.
You guys all know as well as anyone ... to each his own. If that's what works for ya, go with it.
Peace ... Bill

Moongel is a dampening pad, use to muffle, it comes in the form of a gel type substance just over an inch long, to eliminate unwanted resonance.

...tom that is. Get your mind out of the gutter! :D
I just added the 13 to my kit so I'm running 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 and it's a f'n blast to play. What happened is I decided to tune up the kit a few notes higher and when I got to the 14, it was just too high. So, I pulls the 13 off the shelf where its been collecting dust for 2 years and BAM!
I doubt I'll ever bring the 13 to a gig because the kit is already pushing maximum density for most of the clubs I play. But what a fun kit to play now...
Oh, and it's not really 13". That would probably hurt.

Funny how I get a tingling sensation and a little light-headed every time JPC calls my name... :o Damn, did I just type that? Anyway...
Still here. I read the posts every now and then. Goes something like,
"check out my new Refs!"
"building my own snare"
"Zildjian sucks"
"recommend me a new pair of headphones"
"DW vs Pearl"
You get the idea.
Enjoying the new baby fo sho! Turned 3 months on the 4th. Love him more than...dare I say, all my drums?! :D You youngin's will understand in a few years. I tried to get him to hold one drumstick, but he just freaked out and peed on me...again...
Heads: To my ears, so far the clear G2s over Genera resos sounded the best on my Refs. I've tried the stock coated Ambs over clear Ambs, clear G2s over clear Ambs, clear G2s over Genera resos and clear EC1s over Genera resos. To me, the coated Ambs sound too warm and flat on the Refs. The clear EC1s sounded better, but cut too much of the highs. My next experiment will be to use the stock clear Amb resos as batters, but they probably won't last too long given their single-ply construction. I believe member "Wood" (now THERE'S a name from the past!) said a buddy of his tried this combination and the toms sounded wicked.
BTW - I'm also looking forward to trying the new Evans G plus clear heads (12ml).

Oh so I get it, you'd rather get peed on than soil your dainty fingers on the PDF keys??? WTF???
:D
Glad fatherhood is working for you. Luckily my girls are way to old for a Veggy junior date! And as for getting peed on, every time I changed my older daughter's diaper, she peed on me...and I mean EVERY TIME! She's 11 now and we joke her all the time about it. She even pooped on me once. Now that was fun!

JPC -- beautiful kits! I have a suggestion that may be helpful.
I keep a lot of drums that I am not using set up on shelves in the unfinished part of my basement. The area is similar to your shelving area, although not as wide. In order to eliminate the need for dusting drums (and risk potentially scratching them), I ended up attaching plastic to the ceiling joists and have it running all the way to the floor.
In a finished area like yours where you may want it to look nicer, you could hang curtains or use one of those removable spring loaded shower curtain rods.
Of course, you may just like admiring those beauties on the wall, as they are fine pieces of art.

Ha ha, I was being facetious about the "collecting dust". And yes, I love looking at the stuff although at this point, I'm not even sure why I'm keeping some of that stuff because other than the Ref kit, I don't play much of it.
