Bass drum clipping problems

im recording drum tracks for my bands upcoming cd and im having a problem with the bass clipping. If i turn the bass drum up to how loud its supposed to be then it clips. i have tried compressing it, but that doesn't seem to do the trick.

what do i do.

no, im not joking.
many professional mixers will often start a mix with the kick drum and bass guitar, with everything else very very very low, just to get an idea of context. Then they buld the mix around the locked in rythm

i had a small problem with clipping today too, but this was cause i was only messing with the e.q. a lot and changing things.

What do you mean ''you bring it up to where it's supposed to be''?? surley if its clipping then its too loud?? There is no, the kick drum has to be here of your mixer, rules... If it's clipping then turn it down!

IF you are using a decent mic that can handle the SPL, TURN DOWN the INITIAL GAIN on the bass drum (kick) channel. Have a clean initial signal going through the system.

my problem is that i was trying to eq the bass drum right, and make it loud enough so that is would make the master volume clip. So i used Butnutz's idea and that worked very well.

Mixing is like building a pyrimid...you start from the low(witch is the foundation of the mix) and and build your way to the top...but if you mean you bass drum is clipping in the pre-amps, find yourself some preamps with "pad" switches, or a mic with that switch on it.
