I bought a couple of these pillows, and they work great. They're not expensive, work on both 16" and 18" depths, and you don't need an external mic mount :)

Cool, thanks for the info. Some people like to mic their bass from outside the reso.

To me..what is the point of mounting the mic where it is IN the bass..when you could just set it on the pillow..

I mic my bass drum from 2 locations which gives me both the attack and body I want. I have one mic on my side pointing to where the beater hits the head, and another mic right at the reso about 2 inches away.

I guess that would be good if you like the sound of a kick miced from the inside...

positioning can sometimes be alot trickier than just sticking a mic on a pillow. the angle, direction, distance between head and shell and mic make the difference between a useable kick drum sound and an awesome! kick drum sound
