View Full Version : recording heads
hey folks.
In december were going in the studio again. and I definitly need some new heads. I would like to prefer some evans heads, and i love deep sounding drums, with a lot a bass .. can you recommend some heads for toms and especially for bass drums?

EC2s and G2s! G2s are awesome, the perfect balance of everything in my opinion. I haven't played EC2s, and I've heard mixed reviews on them, but they supposedly give a lot of low-end. What kind of music are you playing?

if you are gonna stick with evans, definitly EC2s on batter, g1 or g2 reso.
i forewarn that they dont sound good on all drums, and in all rooms, but when the combination works, its very very good sounding. lots of low end.
we´re playin some kind of emocore, or poppunk heres a link

sounds like a Powerstroke with a danmar patch might do your kick some justice.

G2's on top of toms, G1's on bottom. PC Reverse dot on snare top, Hazy 300 on bottom. Guranteed good recording sound!

thats not necesarily true. When in the studio, it becomes noticeable that G2s have this weird resonance that is higher than the tuning. EC2's are pre muffled, but sound a whole lot better than pinstripes or PS3 tom heads, and therefore defeat the resonances. I am not talking about sustain either, and dont tell me to learn how to tune, if i didnt know how, i wouldnt get paid to be a drum tech.
IMO, G2s sound like plastic anyway.

I agree on the G2 Clear sounding like plastic...but they are great for playing loud when un-mic'ed. I was thinking of the switch to either a G2 Coated or EC2...I prefer Evans but have heard the Remo Pinstripes on a Tama set...sounded great. Not sure what they would sound like on my MRX though.
Is it just me or do most recordings use the coated or somewhat premuffled version heads?

depends greatly on the room, player, drums, and style of music. Coating has more to do with the tonality than resonance.
