guys... would the C1000 from AKG be a good hi hat mic? or do i need something more directional? Preferably from Shure or AKG

any quality pencil condenser will do the trick

how big is your drum room? how close is your hihat to a wall? what style of music do you play?

or is this for live use?

Believe it or not, you can get great results with an SM57.

That's what was used on Chad's hats on Stadium Arcadium. :)

Depends on your budget, I like the Shure SM81 on hats.

It is rare in my experience that a hihat mic ever gets used in a mix...if you have the inputs to spare, by all means experiment, but its probably unnecessary to spend more than $120 on a mic.
If you want to go the small diaphragm condenser route, i recomend an MXL 603 or 604, basically the same mic.

I agree. I tried out several different mics for recording my hats, and liked the SM57 the best. The thing I liked most about it was that there was minimal bleedthrough, as opposed to my pencils, which picked up everything. With the 57, I didn't need to gate the hats at all, which I much prefer....

LOL, my hats are too damn loud in my overheads without their own mic!

On hi hats ALWAYS use condencer mics... Condencers have quicker transient responce then dynamic mics, i have heard the difference. Don't gate it, you'll loose sound, simply put a hi pass filter on it, line it up with the overheads using the nudging tool(by millisecs). Use a small diaphram condencer mic and point it on top of the hats(about 2 inchs above when open) pointing away from the rest of the set... trust me. ;)

I know its insane, but I have got great results using the fairly cheap behringer c2's for hihat mics... Although they are cheap mics and from a cheap brand I highley recommend them!!

I've had some good luck with the AKG C1000 on my hats but I like the Shure SM81 a bit more. Plus, it's always good to have a couple of 81's around anyway.
