what is a good mic clip to get? i mean, one that will actually hold your mic to the rim and not let it slip out.

for live use?
mic clips are generally a bad idea in the studio.

the shure A56d clamps are good and solid, and the audix D-Vice clips are pretty sweet too. im not fan of the LP claws.

yes, i will have to use them in the "studio". i do not have the space to have the extra stands. my god i just checked the price. i guess theres no way around paying $40 per clip?

Check ebay. I got 5 on stage stands mic clips in a package for like 50 bucks. They aren't that wonderful, but for someone on a budget, they do their job.

how much space do you not have?

there are ways around using big clunky stands while avoiding clips.....and the answer is use small, low profile stands meant for micing anything shorter than 4.5'..they come in weighted round base, and tripod base...for something like a snare drum, its possible to utilize 1 stand for 2 mics by using a combination of stands with a mic clamp attached, or by using a stereo microphone bar and goosenecks.

of course, if space really is that tight, than clamps could be your only choice, in which case my advice is "dont skimp and get crappy clamps." the shure ones are by far my favorite, and can be used for clamping to the rim, or to anything round[IE: drum hardware, mic stands, etc...]

space really is that tight. i am on a 10' (more or less) square drum riser, and theres absolutely no room for stands. i can barely fit my set on it. the only thing i will have to use a stand for will be my bass, but i found a very small stand on musiciansfriend that looks good.
