Here's a place to post your rants and raves about your recording software, and an area to ask questions.
What I use-
Pro Tools M-Powered (and LE) 7.1
Pro Tools HD
Reason 3.0
What I have used-
Logic 7
Digital Performer 4
Ableton Live

I want that Pro Tools.
Do you need an M-Audio interface to use that software, or any other standard firewire mixer or whatever?

Yes, Pro Tools M-Powered requires an apporoved M-Audio interface. There are a lot of them to choose from.
What are your I/O needs?
I highly suggest the M-Audio 1814.

Cubase is on par with Pro Tools features. Both basically offer the same thing, and the graphical interface isn't all that different.

expanding on the answer already given, ALL protools systems REQUIRE you to use Digidesign hardware. HD is the only system that allows you to use more than 1 interface. HD also allows the use of 3rd party converters[approved models with the correct output that uses a DIGILINK cable] when your Core/Accel cards are setup correctly.
Protools LE and M-Powered are almost the same in terms of features. LE uses digidesign interfaces and hardware, and M-Powered uses APPROVED M-Audio interfaces and hardware. Both allow the use of ONLY 1 interface at a time, so you cant plug 2 mboxes in and expect to suddenly have 6 mic inputs.

If I were to get a Prosonus Firepod firewire interface, what would be the best decent software that would be compatible?

Does anyone use Logic Express or Live 5.0 to record?

Is Cubase SE3 a good piece of software? I plan on using LE and getting the hang of it, and then buying SE3 when I'm ready for a larger scale program. I don't think I need all the featurs that SL3 and SX3 have to offer, but if I do find that I'd need/want them I can always upgrade.

Well, apparently not Protools M-Powered, right?

The firepod comes with a free copy of cubase LE. That should be plenty powerful enough to get started.
I personaly use cubase, I know pro-tools is industry standard... but they seem pretty much the same? feel free to correct me if im wrong.

Is Audacity any good? Or would I be better off with M-Box and Protools?
