Was just wondering what is the best Digital recorder around 300$? I'm looking for a decent one for recording my drums. I'll get a inexspensive mixer and a few mics. I just need to know which brand/model is the best one to get.

Thanks

Do they make digital recorders for $300?

They have the Tascam DP-01 8 track, the Fostex MR-8 mkII and the Tascam Pocket studio 5 but it's discontunued. I think theres another one by Zoom that looks pretty cool. I just need to know if anyone uses the ones I just named.

Why don't you get a Firewire mixer instead of a mixer + recorder? BTW my friend has the Fostex and hates it.

Well I need the digital recorder because I don't have a computer close to my drums so I need something to mix and record. Then I can hook the digital recorded to the PC i have in my room. I really don't know what to do I need something portable maybe even a Mimidisc recorder or something.

a used roland vs890 would be your best bet..i have used tascams, fostex and zooms.overall, the roland was much better than their competitors..i have seen the roland vs890 on ebay for around 300 bucks

The quality of Roland recording gear definitely surpasses that of Tascam, Fostex and Zoom. They can usually do more than the "equivalent" by any other brand. I definitely wouldn't do the mini disc thing because you'll be stuck with nothing but a stereo pair of tracks.

I think for $300 the best you can do is a used 4-track tape recorder and a couple of decent mics (SM57s). Your alternative would be to buy a crappy flash memory digital recorder and crappy mics. At least if you go the 4-track route, you'll have good mics that you can use when you eventually upgrade.

Nothing wrong with a tape 4-track (cassette). Get the basics down, move up from there. I also agree, the SM57's are great for the price.

Also, check out used gear. I picked up my Tascam 8 track digital recorder for 175$. (actually not used, old stock at Long and Mcquade's)

Ahhh thanks for the suggestions I'll look into The Roland and the Zoom. I'll definately check ebay tho love that place. I have kind of a off question but can you hookup a CD player into a mixer and use that as a receiver? I'm just wondering cause the CD player i use has a headphone jack with a volume nob but it's really not that loud and doesn't have the greatest sound. So i just thought since i'm getting a mixer anyways might as well hook it up to he CD player.
