I am spending the day setting up my home recording area...I have everything set up, but I have absolutely no clue how to work Cubase. Can anyone give me a simplified version of how do I set up Cubase to record all five mics I have into separate tracks at the same time? I have it so I record on to one entire track, but I am having trouble trying to split the tracks.

What Cubase are you using? If you're using the bundled Cubase LE, you will only be able to import 4 individual tracks at a time. You could probably import 3 mics individually and then the 2 overheads (assuming you're using 2) as a stereo track maybe? I'm not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure about the 4 at a time thing.

Alright...I may upgrade LE then...but then how would I even do 4 at a time or what kind of project would I start...Im brand new to recording.

I'm not sure, if I had LE at the moment I could help you out. I'm buying my Phonic firewire mixer in a couple weeks, and it comes w/ LE, so I'll be learning right when I get it.

Cubase SE3 is also a very good program for $75-$100. I believe up 48 audio tracks and unlimited MIDI tracks.

press f4 to get up you vst connections.. from there you chose how to route your inputs.. then from the track you are recording, simply choose the input you wanna use for that track... on the left.. where it says.... input :-)

Alright...from The F4 Screen I have Bus 1, 2, 3, and 4

It separates them where Line Out 1+2 are Bus 1, Line Out 3 + 4 are bus 2, Line out 5+6 are bus 3, and line out 7 + * are bus 4.

Do those 1-8 numbers coordinate with my mic input numbers (so for example if I have mics in inputs 3-7)

I have no idea what your talking about when you say input...I dont see anything that says input.

I do appreciate you trying to help though! Thanks!

I use a firepod with Adobe Audition 2. Spend about an hour setting up and getting your basic levels, and you should be away. The firepod and audition are both very easy to use and understand - I dived in using this with no previous recording experience and managed just fine.

PM me if you have particular questions about either firepod/audition (if you chose to take the audition route).

Oh, I was informed that you could only simultaneously record 4 tracks to be assigned to their own individual tracks on the program. My bad.

Wait, so is a firepod able to be used by a mic using a XLR lead or does it have to be a jack?

I has both XLR and 1/4" inputs, if that's what your asking.

yeah in the middle of the 3 prongs for the XLR cable, is the 1/4" jack spot.

Also does this not do the exact same job as a firepod? http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010-main.html

Well it has no XLR inputs, so technically no.

well its for plugging in a an analog mixer. see firepod is kinda both. you would go from the direct outs on the mixer to all the channels in the interface

That's actually a pretty nice unit, not that I've read more on it. If you've got a nice mixer, that'd be pretty nice b/c then you've got Firewire-esque recording capabilities as well as a live mixer then.

Alright I have everything all figured out and set now and it works wonderful and I am pretty happy with the sound. I know I have more tweaking to do and experimenting with mic placemet...but this was a day well spent.

What mics are you using again?

Fusion 6 Pack.

Only think I am not entirely happy with is the bass drum, but I expected that and will be picking up a quality bass drum mic in the next month or so.

But does that do the same job of recording wise by sending them into different multitrack on a program such as adobe audition?

I personally like the idea of having a analog mixer and an audio interface well if that does the same job...
