Post a brief description of your recording rig. List your gear and maybe post a picture or two. But try to make it an overview, not a complete tour. Make a separate thread if you want to go way into detail about the nuances of your studio.
Let's just try get a grasp on what everybody is using in one thread.
Then maybe if you have a question about a specific piece of gear, you can scan this thread and see who else might be using it.

My band uses 2 Behringer mixers (FX2442 and ???), a couple of Oktavia tube-preamps, a M-Audio Delta 1010 interface and Cakewalk Pro-Audio software at the moment. We have some SM57s, some MXLs, Audix, CAD, and Sennheiser mics.
Our guitarist just purchased the Digi002 rack with Protools LE, so we will probably be using that for future recording projects.

Audix D6
Audix i5 (3x)
Studio Projects B1 (x2)
A borrowed Shure KSM27 that we've been using on EVERTHING since we've had it. Sounds great on the floor tom.
Occaisionally a Joemeek condensor when we need to closemic the ride.
Sometimes a Studio Projects T3 as room mic
Soundtracks PC MIDI 24 channel desk (great sounding mic pre's and EQ's on these)
MOTU 2408 I/O
Cubase SX3 w. Voxengo MarquisComp, GlissEQ & Elephant. PSP Vintage Warmer, MixPressor and MixSaturator. Fishfingers FloorFish & BlockFish gate and comp.
Sometimes Drumagog loaded with a Vinnie Paul BD sample when we need a bit of extra click attack.
Thats our usual lineup for recording drums.

What I am currently using are the following:
Koss headphones.
Drum Mics:
(2) AKG-D112 (http://www.akg.com/products/powerslave,mynodeid,186,id,261,pid,261,_language,E N.html) bass drum mics
SM57 (http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/WiredMicrophones/us_pro_SM57-LC_content) mic on my snare
7 pack CAD Drum mic package (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/CAD-PRO7-7Piece-Drum-Microphone-Pack?sku=270749) (w/ the CAD bass drum mic on my floor tom)
Micing my 12, 13, 14 and floor tom
Two overhead condenser mics
(As time goes on, I am slowly upgrading the CAD mics, but to be honest, they do a pretty good job on their own.)
All the mics are run into a Behringer UB2222FX Mixer (http://www.behringer.com/UB2222FX/index.cfm?lang=ENG)
I then run my board through my Behringer AutoCOM MDX1400 (http://www.behringer.com/MDX1400/index.cfm?lang=ENG), using the compressor/limiter feature, plus a slight noise gate effect.
The output of the AutoCOM goes into track 1 on my Tascam 424mk III Portastudio (http://www.tascam.de/en/docs/424mkIII_manual.pdf) four track.
Recently I’ve switched my set around and added an Eliminator double pedal, so I’ve been micing the batter head of my bass drum and running that into channel 2 on the AutoCOM and then into track 2 on my Tascam 4 track. I do this so if I need to, I can blend in more bass drum into the mix. Since I’m not running the batter head mic through the mixer (and the mixer settings) I get a different bass sound on track 2. It gives me a little more focused attack.

Soon I will exchange the AV-Jefe clip ons and Sennheiser MD421's with Sennheiser's E604, which are apparently really really good from what I've heard from people and what I've heard with my ears. It's easier to have homestudio clipons (saves space) and also be able to use them live.
For the security I also have triggers for the kicks & snare...when I want to sample them I just plug em straight into the preamp and sample them later in Cubase with Drumagog...where I got a huge libary plucked from the internet and self made..

Home studio consists of:
Akai DPS24 w/adat&sync expansions, which is controlling ProTools LE via MMC and MTC.
I use the dps24 for tracking, transfer timestamped .bwf files to protools for editing and mixing, and use the assignable fader banks of the DPS to control the protools faders.
PT hardware is a Digi002Rack, and an Mbox2[soon to be an MBOX2 pro...firewire+wordclock!]
PT runs on a PC with a stripped down version of windows XP pro, athlon 2200, 1.5gigs ram, 4x7200rpm 120gig hard drives, radeon9800pro...old but stable machine that has some intense fan action!
Plugs include waves diamond 5.0, all the massey plugs, all the bomb factory plugs, and anything else thats free or i really need [or i need to work at home...like autotune!]
list of everything else later, gotta go to work.

It's a very common technique, you can control your kick sound well with it.

10-01-2006, 09:59 PM
Oh yeah. In fact, when I was using two basses and I was recording some single bass stuff, I would double mic. But it meant that I had to pull the mic off of one bass drum to use on the other. I liked the control I had over the sound, so when I got the double pedal I just moved the left bass drum mic to the batter side of the right bass.

i would honestly go after either the beta 52, beta 91, or the audix D6

Vocals. I tried using the SM57 but it just didn't sound good.
EDIT: Heh I only see why you were curious now. I record guitars and basses and vocals sometimes too. I realise the setup sounds like a drums-only gig. I can use the SM57 for guitars and the AKG D112 for bass guitars too though. The sm57 is grand but I'm not too keen on the akg for basses...

I was actually curious because, in my book, the SM58 is only really good for live vox. It's pretty much a SM57 with a grill on it (but not quite...). I'd never use one for vox in the studio though. Much more worth it to buy a cheap condenser. Even better, buy a decent condenser! :D

I see. I don't actually know much about vocal mics, I've only messed with vocals once or twice, but I'm recording a friend's band on either sunday or monday, last time I recorded 'em the vocals came out soooo bad. So you say a decent condenser would be better? Would an NT5 work? Or would I need a large-diaphragm condenser? Thanks for clearing that up for me, I would've thought an SM58 on vocals would be like an SM57 for guitars ha. Stupid clever marketing...

SM58's are great on live vox. The grill helps them hold up the the kind of wear they'd receive in the hands of a vocalist. Large diaphragm condensers are the most common choice for studio vox. My top choice for the money would no doubt have to be the Rode NT1a. Hands down the best studio vocal mic for the price (in my opinion).

* Sennheiser e602 bass drum mic

* Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio 4XL recording software (on my Pentium 4 / 1 Gig RAM desktop)
I do all the recording on the 2488, then bring it home and upload the WAV files on to the desktop via USB, and mix and master everything in Cakewalk. Works for me. I've been tossing around the idea of getting a 17" widescreen laptop, so I can do it all mobile. (I do lots of mobile recording, it just seems to make more sense to be able to manipulate whatever was just recorded right then and there when I want to.)

Plugs include waves diamond 5.0, all the massey plugs, all the bomb factory plugs, and anything else thats free or i really need [or i need to work at home...like autotune!]
list of everything else later, gotta go to work.
man, i should update this, considering i sold almost all of my personal gear because i was never using it.
right now its down to an mbox2, my pc at home for editing(i mix at work on a PT-HD3 accel system on a G5 quad, Control24 or procontrol, depending on which room im in on a given day) an ibookg4 that i use for remotes...and ive got a new firepod here that i havent used yet that im demoing for a month. ahh free gear.

its a very sensitive mic with EXCELLENT transient response, though it is fairly mid heavy. it certainly doesnt 'sparkle', and it has a very unhyped low frequency response. what it does have is headroom for days, ive never managed to distort it, ever, though it really needs a pad on loud sources. it also looks sweet, people like it.
i use it for all sorts of things: snare(with a pad!), V/O, guitar, percussion, violin, cello, and vox. ive have also been meaning to try it on a bass cab, but lately, i havent had anybody with a bass amp worth micing.
i really like the radial DI boxes for bass, very very clean. i had an RE20 for awhile that i used on kik and bass, but i was borrowing it from work, and we have been especially busy lately(not this week, thank god!, finally a breather!) also use the b52a for bass, and ive "appropriated" u87's from work for that purpose before.
i really love the e609 on guitar and snare bottom though! and the I5 is like a smoother 57, works quite well for the screaming vocalists, and tames the nasty horrible resonances of 3" deep snares

some of the blue mics are, in my opinion, among the highest quality new microphones you can buy. their high end models (Blue Bottle, Cactus, Kiwi, Dragonfly, Mouse and Blueberry) are all great microphones with excellent workmanship and great sound characteristics.
V/O would be voiceover(narration.) I am primarily working in post production for TV and Radio these days(its where the money is), so i record ALOT of voiceover...probably 15-20 sessions a week for various shows and networks.
any music recording im doing is pretty much for my own purposes or for friends these days.

Saffire Pro 26 i/o

The Baby Bottle handles the level quite well, as i said, ive never been able to distort this microphone. you might need to pad the input to the mic pre though.
it can be either very smooth or slightly too mid heavy. does a great job of really controlling the low end and low mids, and taming harsh high frequency stuff. its very detailed in the midrange, so its not hard to make it sound a little harsh. can be solved by mic placement(position on the speaker, on/off axis)....i think i still have some sessions saved where i used the BB on guitar.
I've got a pretty humble set-up. I have a toshiba Satellite laptop, an M-Audio Fast Track 4x4 mic pre amp hooked up via usb, Ableton Live 5, Lounge Lizard ep 3 electric piano V I, Roland TD-8 Module with pads, with upgraded cymbals and snare pad. M-Audio Keystation 49e, two medium condensor microphones by Apex ( really cheap but work fine, $70 each) and thats about it. Apart from some other mic's and stands and stuff such as guitars and amps. I may make a myspace account and put up songs I made to let you guys hear.

Jacked via firewire into the following PC:

Silent case with passive cooling on video card and silent CPU cooler
These are my mics:

2x Audix F15's overhead
1x SM57 Snare
3x Audix F10's for 8, 10, 12 toms
1x Audix F12 for 14 tom
1x AKG D550 for kick
I'm using a program called Reaper for recording, found here Reaper Website (www.reaper.fm). It's pretty comprehensive for an inexpensive DAW package.
The Alesis mixer just rocks - it outputs 8 mono, 4 stereo pairs + 2 monitors, discreet, thru the firewire connection so it basically acts as a DAW control surface for relatively cheap. ($399) Alesis is discontinuing this tho in favor of a USB 2.0 model for some reason I can't fathom.
At any rate, I'm fairly new at learning how to record (usually have let other people do it and I just play) but learning has been a blast so far.

It works like a champ. I recorded a live concert for DVD that was 18 tracks at 48k for 3+hours and it was like butter. Lots of people will nay say the mini with pro tools but I use it professionally and have yet to run into any issues. The main thing I stand by is using the mini for recording and recording only. Yeah but those still have to be plugged into the mini and digidesign reccomends doing it like a chain and not using a hub (thats what the monitor is doing). If you are looking to save money with the mini I wouldn't go with a apple cinema display anyway. They are very nice but also SUPER pricey. I got a HannsG 19" widescreen for $129 and its works perfecty with my rig (especially since I travel and it is cheap!).

One of them has a special made snake that turns the 8 inserts into 8 outputs. It involves jumping one of the pins (directions on how to make this cable are included with the digimax). I had a friend of mine who works at claire brothers make it for me. Those connect to the 8 analog in's of the 002. The other is connected via light pipe. The top Eureka has the digital out card with the second eureka jumped into it. That runs into the spdif input. Thats how I get all 18 inputs.
As for the NT5's, I think they are great for their price. I have used them for recording a live vocal chorus (stereo x/y) with great results. Minimal eq is needed to notch out some of the mid range. I forget exactly where it is but it also maybe the auditorium causing some of the problem. I price matched and got the pair for $299.
