Anyway, what are people's opinions on shure microphones? I'm lloking into them, but I don't know about their quality.

My friend owns a Shure SM57. The mic is amazing, but we've had some strange techical problems... We had to return the first one because it wasn't picking up sound, at all.

The mics are top notch and seem to be indestructable.

SM57 is the best mic ever (or at least the best "bang for the buck").
And you can't go wrong with a Beta 52 for the bassdrum, but I prefer the Audix D6 :)
Zorl...

(Woho, Recording forum, weeey!)

Well, Shure mics are amazing value for money. You get (near) pro sound for budget prices. A lot of their range is pretty much industry standard (how many SM57's do you see mic'ing snares on DVD's and stuff?) and great live too.

I use Shure SM57/Beta on snare, Beta 52 on kick and 98DS on toms (and sometimes snare side). They give very pleasing results.

I have two SM57s that rule. I think their entire SM series and Beta series are great.

I've tried the PG series and I think they're overpriced garbage. Might as well buy Nady for the same quality, much better price.

Shure are great mics. I own the SM57 and the SM58. Both are two of the most widely used mics in the world for vocals (58) and audio reinforcement (57). Almost everybody uses them at one time or another.
I've heard nothing but great things about the Beta 52 as well.

The KSM44 is the best mic ever. I got such an amazing kick sound... I should post some samples.

different capsules and transformers. Therefore, different sound. Maybe better, maybe worse, its all application dependant.

My school has a few 25 year old Beta 57s (vocals), and they have been to hell and back and still work perfectly. they have been stepped on, dropped, thrown, rolled over with a work dolly, you name it, those thing have been through it. the durability and construction is unmatched by any other company IMO.

All my mics are Shure. Not top of the line (except the SM57), and they work great for me. Here's a list of what I use:

5 Shure 8600 vocal mics
1 Shure SM57
1 Shure PG52
1 Shure Prologue 16L pencil condenser

IMO, you can't go wrong with them.
Cheers!

There's a reason Shure is a standard. Very dependable mics. Company has been making them a LONG time. However, because of that you pay a little "name premium" on the PG series mics. For the same cost or less of the PGs, you can get the Audix Fusion series which everyone that owns them reports that they are the best bang for the buck at that level. Even people who've later upgraded to more expensive mics.

I've never used the Beta57 on snare but it's slightly larger than the SM57 (a hassle in that tight area) but does have a real metal windscreen to protect it. I used to use an SM57 for snare but recently picked up a used Beta56 for the price of a new SM57 (usually 50% more). Much smaller, metal grill, small body on a pivoting base, cable plugs into the base out of the way. It sounds as good or better than the SM57 and is far more convenient.

IF you come across ANY Shure mic for dirt cheap or free BROKEN, take it. Shure will repair or replace their mics for a set fee, type dependant. SM57s are $50 plus shipping (a little gouge there). So I got a NEW in the box with bag & clip SM57 when I sent in one with a broken head, total just under $60. Not a freebie but better than a sharp stick in the eye ;>)

WOW, think that applies to really old ones too? I have an SM57 that says "shure bros." Just a guess, but it looks like it's maybe 30 years old.

Don't know about their QUALITY????!!!??? You haven't been living in a cave for 50 years have you??? Kidding! I use about 10 different Shure mics for live and recording, and IMO, they are the best of the best. They test the Beta 58 by submerging it in salt water, dropping bricks on it, etc.etc. I love the KSM 27 as an all purpose mic for studio, and of course, the SM57 is THE industry standard for a snare mic. Shure would be one of the safest investments you'd ever make. Even their PG series is quite good for a value mic.
