would a rotating base hi hat stand work as well as a 2 leg stand for double base? That is, would you be able to adjust it to not have a leg over the pedal?

yes, it will be fine for a double pedal, but if you want other pedals for your left foot, then a two legs is by far much better.

it may be able to move enough to leave room for the pedal but then the leg will probably be right next to the other side of the hi-hat pedal. like wait for sleep said, if you want to add a third pedal on the left like a remote hi-hat, or cowbell/clave then it could become a problem.

The thread starter can correct me if i am wrong, but when you "Double bass" i am assuming you mean true, double bass, not double pedal. In which case a 3 leg would in effect work with a double bass kit, so long as you don't mind your Hi-Hat FAR from the left bass drum.
3 leg Hats work fine with most double pedal setups so long as they swivel. But if you plan on adding a remote hat, Clave, etc then just go with a 2 leg.

This is the best you can do with a double pedal and a 3 leged stand. This is how i kept mine for years, it would be better to eliminate one hihat stand leg to be able to move the left foot farther left without hitting a leg. But it works fine.
As far as having 2 bassdrums it will be much difficult to find comfterble placment, in that case a 2 leged stand and a Hihat - basshoop clamp would be best!

it would work. I have done it both ways but, personally, I love my 2-leg iron cobra so much more than my old stand. Unless you really like 3-leggers or upgrading isnt an option for whatever reason i really suggest looking into a 2-leg. You can't lose since it is the new trend and all f the 2 legs from pearl/tama/dw are SOLID.

if it is a double kick then you could get a hh to bass drum attachment clamp and it allows you to fold up the legs of the hh right?

I used a double pedal in conjunction with a hi-hat with swivel legs for a few years and didn't like it. I have a large foot - size 13 EEEE. I can't have my left pedals too close together. About 5 years ago I picked up a new double pedal and hi-hat stand with two legs and it was a tremendous improvement.

This is another set-up option when using a 3 legged swivel base hi-hat stand along with multiple pedals.
As you can see the double pedal and remote hi-hat pedal are set-up from the outside of the legs.

Id go for the 2 leg stand every time. It makes positioning extra pedals easy and you dont lose any stability. I cant see any reason to go with a 3 leg stand to be honest because all it does is limit your options...

can't two legged stands swivel anyway?

That works only if you have girly-man feet. It won't work for me and my 13 EEEE feet. Another drummer pal of mine has size 15 feet. Forget about it....

They can swivel as much as their 3-legged "cousins"

Yeah thought so. Doesn't kinda render this thread pointless.
Also if you worrying about stablity 2 legged ones are generally more stable. If you think about it a "3" legged one is actually a quad base if you included the pedal where as "2" legged on is actually a tripod.

Yeah but on most 3 legged hat stands, the footboard is collapsable so the whole stand can be stored flat.
You're right about the 2 legged stand using the footboard as a 'third leg'.
i think the 2 leg stands are much easier to position when playing double kick/using a double kick pedal i used to have a Pearl H820 with 3 legs and the 3rd leg was always in the way now i have a yamaha with 2 legs (i want to get an eliminator or iron cobra hatstand eventually) and its much easier to position, i can get the hi hat pedal flush against the slave pedal and none of the legs are in the way

I wouldn't say I have girly man feet, I wear size 11 and am able to use all 3 pedals just fine, You just have to know how to use the pedals properly.
The same goes for people who have large feet and say their pedal boards are too small, I don't buy this because if you know how to use the pedals then no matter what size your feet are, you'll still be able to play accurately.
A member on this forum (his user name slips my mine) made a great instructional video on doubles techniques as well as showing the pedal size has nothing to do with your ability to play the bass drum or any pedals.

How close can you get a 2-legged hi-hat stand to a second bass drum? Does anyone have any pictures?

That's very uncomfortable for us 14-4E folks. I can't fit my foot in a space like that.
Rock: You can use a clamp and get it right next to the left pedal. Give me a minute to take a picture and I'll show you.

Right. Minute's up. It's not the clamp that came with the set, but here are the pics I promised:

The clamp attatches to the hi-hat stand, and is in turn anchored via a series of nifty gadgets to the bass drum hoop.

Right next to each other. Hardly have to move my foot at all to shift between the two.

I took the influence from there, but it's not an actual star.
PM me or hit me on AIM/Yahoo if you want to talk about it. I'd rather not derail any threads today.
