i just want to know, has anybody ever had any experience with a DW craviotto snare? i think they have good qualities, but ive never actually heard one for myself, and if i get good feedback, i may look into getting one for myself. thanks a lot!
a craviotto is probably one of my all time favorite snare, and the best snare (IMO) that DW makes.
it has a very nice pop and overall great sound to it. this snare is very versitile. i highly reccomend that you try this drum out.

See ab's avatar? That's a Dunnett and it blows away the Craviotto.
yep, i am hopefully going to buy a 6.5x13 stainless steel snare with flame etching (maybe) soon. but the craviotto is a GREAT snare too.

the Craviottos are all great drums. I encourage you to buy one with quality parts. Go for the brass lugs and a good throw, not the cheaper cast DW lugs. It will open up the drum more, and it will look better longer, which is a nice bonus.

Yes, the DW craviotto snare drums are insanely good sounding. It brings a joy to my playing every time I get to play one.

Quick queston: How do they compare to DW's Edge snare?

The edge series has a metal insert along side a maple shell. The affect is a blend of traditional warm wood sound with the presence and extra projection of a metal drum. Very sweet sounding. Have to play it to believe it.
the edge is another awesome snare. but for the price, i think the craviotto is a better choice.

I've searched around online but haven't found any prices for either drum. What would a ballpark price of a 6x14 Edge with an exotic finish be compared to a Craviotto with the same finish?

Call Just Drums or Steve's.I bet they're over $1000 Canadian. The Edge snare is really heavy too you might need a new case/stand.

if i'm not mistaken, the lugs are the same, and the brass is a plating and merely for show.

An edge 6.5x14 snare at Fork's Drum Closet (a competitively priced store) is about $1200 (even more than the craviatto), but it sounded as nice or better than any custom snare or main stream company snare. I believe it is possible to purchase edges with craviatto centers;if so that snare could have been one with the craviatto center (making the exceedingly high price tag seem more reasonable). And, yes, the edge is VERY heavy!

Yes, edge series can be fitted with a craviotto, collectors maple and exotic. You can order each type of wood and use each one to your pleasure.

One of the snares in my small (but mighty) collection is a 13x6 Crav.
It sounds really good no matter what you do.
Play it soft, play it loud.
Play it dry, play it ringy.
It also is very responsive to snare tension changes.
HOWEVER,
When the time comes to kick it at a large venue, loud gig, or outdoor show, I use my 14x6.5 MRX. It raaawwwwks!
a 5x14 satin oil edge will be about $750 at a guitar center, but you can get it for less at other places.

I just glanced at the price tag, I know Fork's shows both the list price and their price on the tag (so I probably saw the list price)
