View Full Version : Nashville Studio Gigs?

I've been in Nashville since April of 2000. I have played a LOT of gigs in the clubs on Lower Broadway and a few other places around town. I would like to get some session work going...it doesn't matter if it's for song demos, indie artists...whatever! I can read number charts; I did some session work in California before I moved to Music City, so I've got some experience in that realm.

I guess I'm looking for suggestions from other Nashville drummers on how to get a foot in the door in the studios in the area. Should I make a CD of my earlier work, and a bio/resume', and take it around to some of the studios here in town? I've read some articles that suggest hanging out at writers' nights to try to get demo work...is that really a good way to network? I thought playing Lower Broad would help me to make some connections; but so far, that has not lead to any studio work. I'm a good, solid, creative drummer (my main influences are Eddie Bayers, the late great Larrie Londin, Buddy Harmon and Milton Sledge). Any ideas would be welcome!! Thanks!! :D

Well you certainly have great influences! Their my main
influences as well! (Harry Stinson is another)
I don't have any secrets for ya but I wish you luck. It
sounds like your on your way. I blow thru Nashville and
play the Opry but my boss uses a studio drummer to record.

Thanks for the reply, David!

I feel badly about forgetting to mention Harry Stinson, as, like me, he is a SINGING drummer! I used to watch Harry on "American Music Shop" on TNN (back in the good ol' days of the NASHVILLE Network), and always hoped I might be able to somewhat follow in his footsteps once I got here from Bakersfield! I've run into Harry a couple of times since I've been here, and he's always had some encouraging words for me.

I've also had the good fortune of meeting Eddie Bayers and Paul Leim here (another drummer I admire greatly), and they are great guys! I guess persistance, vision, and just trying to be as easy to work with as possible are the keys to making it here as a musician.

I do envy you some, David, as you've accomplished something that has been one of my goals all along: playing the Opry. By the way, you can e-mail me if you want to, to let me in on who your "boss" is...I'm curious!

All the best,
Tim

Wow, Dave, that is one BIG *SS Ten Gallon hat you wear on stage.

How does that thing not fall off

I used to wear a black cowboy hat while playing back in Texas, but it just gets way too hot here in Florida.
