Went to a party last night hosted by a drummer for a band my band plays with alot.

Checked out their practice room, and something caught my eye. In the corner of the practice room, I spotted the most beautiful Slingerland kit I have ever seen. The guy said he got it in a yardsale in 89' for $675. It had been sitting in the guys attic for years.

This was a 6 piece. What looked to be 12, 13, 16, 18 toms, 14" snare, and a 22x18" bass.

The finish was described as a "metallic sparkle", but further inspection showed the sparkle was almost a "brownish" color.

Besides the hardware being fairly rusted, and quite a bit of dust from lack of play, the kit was in great condition.

I know its difficuly to get a price on this kit without seeing it, but does anyone have any idea on how much a kit like this would be worth? If not for my brain telling me otherwise, I was ready to fork over $1500 cash for it on the spot.

Depends what the guy wants to accept for it, and ultimatly it's your choice on how much you would wanna pay for it. I'd like to see a pic though.

For that vintage the bass is most likely a 22x14. That set is a pretty standard configuration except for the additional 18" floor tom.

Slingerlands don't bring a lot of money even though they are great drums. I haven't seen the drums you are looking at and don't know what the finish is, but my guess would be you could get that set in really nice condition for not more than $900-$1000, probably less. Given that you say the hardware is pretty rusty, I would think the set is probably worth $700-$750 at the most.

Remember this is just a guess without having seen the drums in question. But look at current prices on eBay and you will see that Slingerlands are generally real bargains.

Keep in mind that it is very difficult to accuratly price vintage drums. For obvious reasons there value will vary greatly by how much someone is willing to pay for it. There is never really an accurate set price ya know.

jano's pretty much dead on here. Finishes do make a big difference, as does the snare that comes with it. A kit with a matching wood snare will bring a premium over the same kit with a metal snare (usually) even if it was bought with the kit. this is a broad generalization, and there are always exceptions, but there you have it. Offer 'em $450 and run!
